Chapter 2 - The Birth of Urrigon II

Vaegon Targaryen was displeased. Nay, in fact, he was most displeased.

"What is that?" said the aged maester, pointing at a clothed bundle held by Alicent.

"You're great nephew "said Gwayne smiling, "You're second one in fact".

"He know's what my SON is. Uncle Vaegon is just being moody, like he always is" said Alicent swaying the babe in her arms.

"You are right, let me be more specific then" said Vaegon, his grey robes turning with him to face his oldest and only friend, purple eyes narrowing "Why are you all here!?"

"Vaegon" said Otto Hightower, hand's holding another clothed bundle, Aegon, bouncing it lightly, "Did you think you could hide from me? The King finally visits the Hightower and you do not even bother greeting us!"

"I did it for all your sakes," scoffed Vaegon Targaryen, shaking his head " Even so, what business does the Hand of the King have with a simple maester?"

"It is my sister that has business with you, uncle," said Gwayne a grin on his face as he gestured to the Queen.

"Did I not tell you to stop calling me that many summers ago, we are no kin,"said Vaegon.

"You have been with us since we were little, Uncle Vaegon," said Alicent , Vaegon had noticed the bags under her eyes but despite that, she gave him a wide smile, "You were the first to hold me."

Vaegon turned away, if his silver white hair did not reach past his shoulders, they would have seen his ears beat red , "Queen should not be seen with a fossil"

"Even if the fossil is the son of the late King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysane," said Otto, raising a brow, mirth in his voice.

"And what good did that do me?" spat Vaegon as turned to towards the Hand gritting his teeth," That brat Visery's remains a fool! My father's work was undone in a single generation!"

"That is why we need your blessings Uncle Vaegon" said Gwayne, stepping closer,"It's Urrigon his–".

"Urrigon!? Viserys accepted a Hightower name?" questioned Vaegon, He knew his useless nephew was obsessed with their valyrian culture, just like his spoiled younger brother Daemon.

"Not being there for your Queen at childbirth gives her a bit of weight," said Alicent with a bitter smile.

"Perhaps butchering his first wife has made him a little wise" Vaegon scratched his silver-white beard as if in deep thought, before shaking his head , "Impossible."

"Uncle! " said Gwayne aghast, but Vaegon could hear the joy in the young lad's tone.

'Perhaps Janna was right about my bad influence on the boy…'

"Bah, you know I am right," responded Vaegon , waving him off.

"We have a need for you, old friend, nay my daughter does," said Otto.

Vaegon observed his old companion, despite their years of friendship not once had Otto asked for his help. He knew Otto's nature as a schemer and an ambitious second son. He could have gone further if he had, especially when his father Jaehaerys was still alive...

So Vaegon sighed, rubbing his fingers on his forehead, "You're grace, how can this servant be of help?"

The Queen did not respond but simply walked closer to Vaegon, showing him the babe.

"He has your hair?" asked Vaegon , was that the issue? Then the babe opens its eyes and a scowl formed on his face " And he has my sister's eyes…"

"Hide your distaste for your departed sister," said Otto while shaking his head, "Alicent."

Vageon looked at the queen in confusion before she pushed the babe into his arms. He quickly took him.

Vaegon stared at the child, this was the first child he held that shared blood with him. Should he have felt something for the boy who was born in such a world?

The babe in turn stared right back at him before it gave a toothless smile.

"He like's you, uncle" said Alicent , "I knew I was right about this".

"About what?" said Vaegon raising his head while rocking the child in his arms.

"Alicent wants you to do the Hightower's blessing tradition" said Otto smiling.

"You mean the one grandmothers are supposed to?" scowled Vaegon, "If you had forgotten, I have no teats".

"It was not only that uncle, anyone close to the mother of the child would do" said Alicent, she smiled as she looked up at him " I could not do this for Aegon…but I will do it for at least one of my children".

The Hightower blessing tradition was for the grandparents, most usually the grandmother would ascend to the top of the Hightower and show the babe to the open sky, usually at night under the stars. This was to show the child to The Seven who are One and ask for the bae to receive their blessing.

It was a high honour.

Vaegon knew what it meant. His whole life he fled the court and it's thorns, but right at this moment when the daughter of the woman he once knew and a child of his closest friend gazing at hit him with soft green eyes.

Vaegon knew he could not deny her.

—Scene change–

The Hightower was the tallest building in Westeros and mayhaps even the whole world. The night sky was cold as Vaegon stood at its peak. He could see it all.

All of Oldtown and realm far beyond it.

It was a wonder that Hightower's did not grow ambitious with a sight such as this, that they did not become lord paramount's themselves when the gardner's fell. It held many mysteries for it was said to be older then First men themselves.

The cold did not bite him nor the babe in his arms. Their was a beacon behind them that burnt a vibrant orange flame, it guided ships from far away, saving many sailors and those lost at see. The Hightower's words "We Light the way" proving themselves true.

Vaegon Targaryen did not come here to simple stare, though this would be the only opportunity, for none were allowed at the heights of the tower. He was the exception and perhaps the child too.

"I hold no belief in you" spoke Vaegon his voice soft barely above a whisper as he stared up at the stars and moon above , "You took away the only sister I have ever loved and the mother of those I care for"

"But the Mother of this child holds you all in high regard, so I ask of you, the Seven Above" the child hands began to reach for Vaegon but that did not stop him.

"Whether it is the Father above, the Mother or even the Stranger, bless my kin, give him your favour for all that is wo–"

The child began to cry out and Vageon looked down and grew annoyed at the child, "It seems you have some distaste for them as well" he mocked before giving a bitter smile "It will soon be over".

He looked back up but froze. Despite the beacon's light behind them and the flames that along with it he felt a chill. As if something gnawing at his soul.

The babe cry grew louder and Vaegon eye's scanned around the platform. He was alone, the Hightower blessing tradition only allowed for the child and the kin to be so. For they would allow any more

'One to light the way for the other to receive it' was their reasoning.

The Maester knew all of this but why did he feel as if someone was near?

Then his eyes saw it, far ahead once hidden in the night sky was a pale white dot. Vaegon purple eye's squinted as the dot grew larger the closer it came.

"Fire and blood…"said Vaegon taking a step back, clutching the child close," but they should be none here.."

The white dot grew closer at a increasingly faster pace and before Vaegon could even blink he saw it whole.

The scaled beast crashed at the side of the Hightower, it's claws scaping and tearing the building causing parts of it to break off , gripping the side of it as it pulled itself up on the platform.

The dragon was pale grey-white, the color of morning mist, it form as large as two houses stacked upon each other, it's eyes an icy blue. It's teeth as large as Vaegon's whole body.

Vaegon first instinct was to flee, for all the Targaryen 'dragonlord's' blood did for him but he noticed something was wrong with it.

The Dragon seemed…wounded.

No, it was!

Upon closer inspection Vaegon could see some of itts scales were ripped off and chunks of flesh were missing, the red ruining it's pale white hide .The dragon eye's shocked him the most. Blue embers darting around, looking at the night sky above as if in fear.

'Was it running?'thought Vaegon before he quickly crushed it"for what could make a dragon flee?"

He slowly back tracked from the dragon, his purple eyes on it and refusing to look elsewhere.

Suddenly the pale dot let out a shrieking roar that brought Vaegon to his knee's, one hand supporting himself on the floor while the other held the child.

In front of a Dragon all men were equal.

Was this how he would die? A Targaryen dying to a dragon?

A jest that wrote itself. His sister Saera would laugh at such a demise..

The babe screamed out, wailing and crying and Vaegon was quick to try hush it.

"Cease your cries, for they may be the last one's you have if you continue" he hissed at the babe.

The pale dragon fully clawed itself on the platform, screeching and whipping it's head around, it's tail crashing against the beacon. It roared to the night sky's, to the moon.

It blocked the way Vaegon came and the only way were help could.

But what help could they do against a dragon?

Vaegon despite never believing in the Seven began to pray.

He prayed until he felt a shadow above them, the pale dragon's screeching stopped. Vaegon raised his eye's and saw that all the stars in the night sky and watch them all disappear, the moon consumed whole.

The pale dragon maw began to glow with a bright blue flame before a shadow was upon it.

The shadow crashed into the pale blue dragon, fully pinning it down. Its claws digging into the pale dragon's back and making it wail in misery.

For all his knowledge, he had never knew a dragon could wail so pitifully.

Vaegon believed that Vermithor and Vhagar were the largest dragons he would ever see, his fathers and brothers.

But this... a shadow that's form was so large that it consumed the stars and moon above reminded him of the tales of the conqueror's dragon, Balerion.

It scale as black as coal, its maw holding a thousand teeth, with horns that pierced the clouds laying on top of it's head.

But what disturbed Vagon the most, what caused him such fear that he cried for his mothers warmth were it's eyes.

It's baleful emerald eyes, they were as bright and burning as the beacon before them but held no warmth.

They called for a sound Vaegon could not hear.

The mountain of darkness brought it's maw down to the pale white dragon which was squirming in fear in its claws. Slowly sinking its teeth, ripping a chunk out of the dragon.

It thrashed and wailed brief burst of blue falme growing and its throat before it died put.

Vaegon paid the wailing beast no mind, as it was eaten alive by its own brethren.

The Cannibal feasted slowly as its kin cried out, the cruel monster savoring his meal.

Vaegon could only watch and pray its sight was never upon them.

Until another cry let out.

Urrigon wailed into the night sky, tears streamed down the newborn's face and when the baleful green eyes locked onto them, Vaegon felt as if he might to.

The maestar saw the Monster open its gaping mouth where he could see pieces of white scales and flesh on its teeth. A bright green flame began to rumble from it.

He felt the heat burn his silver-grey hair away, any tear's that he was about to cry disappeared as his eye's driedas his throat lost all mosture.

Vaegon closed his eyes and held the chid tightly, sure he would meet his departed kin to.

'Magelle…'thought Vaegon as he bit his lips so hard they began to bleed. The blood dropped below him hitting the one in his arms.

He prayed for mercy, he prayed for forgiveness but knew the Seven would not answer him for they never had.

But when all hope had left his heart the heat disappeared.

Vaegon's body grew cold, colder then it's ever been. He had waited for his demise but it never came.

Purple eyes slowly opened and his heart froze.

The shadow had leaned close, it's eye's looking down at Vaegon, no at the child in his arms. It's cold breath blowing against them.

It was if the world had stopped for none of them moved. Their was no sound besides the babe.

Who had now ceased it's tears. Vaegon felt the babe's arms reach out towards the beast and saw it lean closer.

The shadow could not even fit on the platform was how large it was, the size of a mountain and the babe's hand as small as a ant before it neared each other.

Suddenly the pale dragon shrieked again, seemingly gaining a new burst of strength. It squirmed from beneath the colossuses claws and broke free.

The Pale dragon hurled itself from the tower, spreading its wings mid fall and flying away.

The beast was quick to rise to it's full height ready to give chase but as it was about to leap it looked back at them one last time.

It let out a roar that shook the Hightower and the lands beneath.

So mighty was the roar Vageon felt his consciousness leaving him, the last thing he heard was a babe's laughter.
