Chapter 147 - The Web Cracks

The cold, metallic scent of the warehouse clung to the air as Gwen Stacy hung in place, limbs bound by Doctor Octopus's mechanical arms. Her Symbiote suit hugged her body tightly, its living mass breathing with her, concealed beneath the steel grips that held her. She stayed still, playing her part—captive, vulnerable—but her mind was sharp. Watching. Listening.

Vee moved like a woman possessed—half scientist, half machine. Her mechanical limbs hissed and twitched, but Gwen's attention was on the woman beneath. The real Vee was still there. She could see it now. The grief in her eyes. The hesitation in her movements. But something else lurked beneath that sorrow—a pressure, a fear. Gwen wasn't the only one trapped here.

"You don't have to do this," Gwen said softly, her voice muffled by her mask.

Vee flinched, though she didn't turn around. The arms didn't flinch. They stayed poised, predatory. Always watching.

"You don't get to talk," Vee muttered, her voice tight, frayed. "Not after what you did."

Gwen lowered her head slightly. "Otto wouldn't want this."

Vee slammed a fist down on her workbench. "Don't you say his name!"

The arms snapped outward, one of them slamming into the cell bars near Gwen's face. She didn't flinch. She let the silence stretch, let the tension crackle between them.

"You loved him," Gwen pressed, her tone gentle, understanding. "I know you did. He loved you. And he respected you—everyone saw that. You were a team."

Vee's breathing hitched. Her hands trembled, but the arms around her stayed firm—too firm. Protective. Controlling.

"Stop… Stop talking."

But her voice wasn't as sharp now. It cracked under the weight of her grief.

Above ground, MJ Watson leaned casually against a streetlight, her golden Symbiote-crafted sunglasses hiding her darting eyes. Her outfit—designer coat, purse, and heels—was part of the illusion. Underneath, her Gold Digger Symbiote flexed, ready. Her latte was cold, but it was still her prop.

She took a sip and sighed dramatically. "This neighborhood used to be chic, you know? Before all the crime and murder. Ugh."

A confused pedestrian nodded awkwardly, stepping away from her.

MJ's voice dropped into the comm. "Okay, babe's still alive. Vee's got her. Nobody's dead. Yet."

Talia's voice crackled back. "Stealth level: Loud."

MJ grinned. "Thank you."

Natasha cut in. "Guards are still patrolling the perimeter. They're not amateurs."

MJ glanced discreetly at the men in suits down the street—too disciplined, too polished. This wasn't Vee's crew. This was someone bigger.

Inside the warehouse, Gwen watched Vee's face twitch, her jaw clenching as she soldered something onto a modified Stark reactor coil.

"You can still walk away from this," Gwen said. "Whoever's pushing you—he doesn't care about you. He's using you."

Vee froze.

"He… promised…" she whispered, her voice breaking. "He said we'd finish Otto's dream together."

"And has he?" Gwen leaned forward slightly. "Or is he keeping you in this cage? Making you someone Otto wouldn't even recognize?"

Vee's lip trembled. Her hands shook. The real Vee was clawing to the surface.

But the arms… the arms tightened around her waist like a lover's embrace. Protective. Possessive. Gwen saw it now—they weren't just extensions of her will. They were pushing back, holding her in place.

Fracture slithered in Gwen's mind. "The steel binds more than flesh. It whispers to her. Commands her."

Suddenly, a harsh, distorted voice crackled through a nearby comm system. "Status."

Vee stiffened like a puppet yanked on strings. Her face went blank. Her posture snapped to attention.

"Holding the target. Proceeding as planned."

Gwen's stomach twisted. The change was instant—like flipping a switch. Whoever "he" was, his grip on Vee was stronger than she thought.

MJ, still watching the guards outside, muttered into comms. "Corporate boys still doing their little dance. Whoever's paying for this? They're not shopping at Walmart."

Natasha's voice was tight. "This is private security level. Mercs. Big money."

Storm's voice hummed in from above. "Perimeter rotations are precise. They've done this before."

Wanda's voice cut through, firm but low. "Hold position. We need his name."

Gwen pressed forward. She needed to push now—before Vee snapped back into that soldier mode completely.

"Who is he, Vee?" Gwen asked, her voice sharper now. "Who's feeding you this? Who's in your ear?"

Vee's breathing turned ragged. Her real hands curled into fists. Her lips parted—she wanted to say it. Needed to.

But the arms twitched. Clamped tighter. Gwen could see it in her eyes—pain. Conflict.

"He… He's helping us," Vee whispered. "He said this would… make it right."

"Vee. You know that's not true."

"I… I don't…"

Vee gritted her teeth, tears forming in her eyes.

"You know this isn't Otto's dream. Otto wanted clean energy. He wanted life, not… this."

A single tear slid down Vee's cheek.

"He would hate me," she whispered.

Gwen leaned forward, heart racing. "But he wouldn't give up on you. Neither will I."

Vee's lips quivered. Her body shook. But the arms snapped upward—reacting to her vulnerability like a defense mechanism—coiling protectively around her.

Another buzz from the comms.

"Final phase approaches. Prepare."

Vee wiped her face quickly, like a scolded child trying to hide her tears. "Understood," she replied, voice hollow again.

The walls were back up. But Gwen had seen through them. For a moment, Vee was there—free from the grip of the arms and that voice. She was in there. Gwen just needed more time.

MJ's voice broke the tension on the comms. "Okay, babe's still not dead. Also, I swear one of these guys is wearing cologne that smells like 'Trust Fund Daddy Issues.'"

Talia chuckled. "You gonna give him your number?"

"Oh, absolutely not. Unless it gets me a discount."

Natasha sighed. "Focus."

Wanda's voice was measured, but Gwen heard the strain underneath. "Hold. We need the name. We need the man."

Gwen lowered her head as Vee turned away, returning to her work with shaky hands.

"We're close," Gwen whispered to herself.

Fracture's voice slid into her mind like silk. "The web trembles. The prey is near."

Vee muttered to herself as she soldered a circuit board. "I just… I just wanted Otto to be proud…"

He would be, Gwen thought. You just need to break free.

She would get Vee back.
