Chapter 146 - Beneath The Surface

The warehouse reeked of rust and damp concrete. Every step Doctor Octopus took sent a screech through the stillness, the heavy metallic clunk of her mechanical limbs echoing like a twisted heartbeat. Gwen Stacy dangled in her grip, her Symbiote suit molding tightly to her body beneath the restraints. She kept her breathing shallow, playing the part of the defeated prey. It was all part of the plan—every limp movement, every subtle gasp. But her mind was racing.

She was getting close. She could feel it.

Vee's breathing was uneven—tight, shallow, like someone who hadn't slept in days. Grief had become her fuel, but something else churned beneath it. Gwen could see it now. Vee wasn't just angry—she was scared. Desperate.

The arms hissed as they deposited Gwen onto the cold floor of a makeshift holding cell. Steel bars reinforced with scavenged Stark tech parts—sturdy, but not nearly strong enough to hold Gwen if she really tried. But this was part of the game. She let herself fall to her knees with a grunt, slumping forward as though the fight had finally drained from her. Her eyes flicked upward briefly, taking in her surroundings.

Cameras in the corners. Motion sensors near the doors. Military-grade equipment alongside cobbled-together junk. This wasn't the hideout of a rogue scientist lashing out. This was the work of someone with funding—someone who planned ahead.

Fracture stirred beneath Gwen's skin, its voice slithering into her mind like silk.

**"She is bound by grief… but the hand that feeds her is close. You will see him soon."**

Gwen suppressed a shiver. She needed to play this perfectly.

"You made this happen," Vee spat, pacing just outside the cell. Her voice cracked, anger laced with exhaustion. "You—people like you—you let him die. You ruined everything."

Gwen let her head dip, her voice weak. "Vee… I didn't… I never wanted—"

"Don't lie to me!" Vee's voice shattered the stillness. Her mechanical limbs lashed out, smashing into the wall with a deafening clang. Sparks danced across the concrete. Her eyes were wild, red-rimmed, but there was something behind them. Fear.

Gwen stayed down, but her attention sharpened.

Fear of what?

Vee's pacing slowed. She moved to her workstation, cluttered with arc reactor parts, high-grade wiring, and schematics Gwen couldn't fully make out from her position. But she recognized some of it—Stark-level technology, far beyond what Vee should've had access to.

"He said this would work," Vee muttered to herself, her hands trembling as she adjusted a circuit. "He promised… he said we'd get what we deserve…"

Gwen's breath caught in her throat. There it was. He.

Fracture's voice came again, low and knowing.

**"The strings tighten… but you will see the puppeteer soon."**

Above ground, MJ Watson was still "blending in" the only way she knew how—loudly. Her Symbiote suit had molded into a sleek black trench coat over a golden blouse and heels that clicked perfectly against the sidewalk. She stood near a boutique window, pretending to browse while sipping what had to be her third latte of the day.

"This district used to be cute," MJ said to a random passerby, loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. "Now it's all steel and scaffolding. Gentrification is a disease." She sighed heavily, turning to the older woman next to her. "Do you know where I can get a decent soy matcha latte around here?"

The woman blinked, slightly confused. "I… don't know?"

MJ waved her off, muttering under her breath into her comms. "I am a ghost. No one suspects a thing."

Natasha's voice cracked over the comms. "You're the loudest person in a four-block radius."

"And yet… invisible," MJ whispered smugly. "It's called art."

Talia sighed into the comm line. "Your art sounds like a migraine."

MJ flipped her hair, grinning. "Some of us are born icons."

High above, Storm drifted like a wisp of cloud, eyes faintly glowing as she surveyed the perimeter from the sky. Jean kept her psychic senses spread thin, brushing lightly against Gwen's mind—she could feel her there, but something was fogging her connection to Vee.

Jean's voice was soft but certain in the comms.

"She's inside. But someone's shielding Vee. I can't see her clearly."

Wanda paced in the Stark Tower war room, eyes flickering red as she watched their markers on the holographic map. Her grip tightened every time her gaze landed on Gwen's icon.

"She's getting close," Wanda murmured. "Hold your positions. We need the one pulling the strings."

Back below, Gwen tested the waters. Her voice trembled—partly an act, partly real.

"Vee… who's helping you? I heard you. He… Who is he?"

Vee flinched. Her hand jerked, nearly knocking a piece of tech off the table. She froze, then slowly turned toward Gwen. Her face was tight—like she was holding something back.

"You don't need to know," Vee said, but her voice was thinner now. "You'll see him soon enough."

Gwen's heart raced, but she kept her face blank. She was getting under Vee's skin—breaking through the cracks.

Fracture hummed in her thoughts.

**"The veil is thinning. Soon, you will see him."**

Vee stiffened suddenly. A small device near her workstation blinked—a secure line. She pressed it to her ear. The voice on the other end was distorted, scrambled beyond recognition.

"Keep her there. We're almost ready."

It was brief, but Gwen heard it. Someone was nearby. Someone watching.

Her blood ran cold.

MJ adjusted her sunglasses, her eyes narrowing as she noticed something shifting near the warehouse entrance. A group of men—dressed in dark suits, walking with the kind of precision that screamed money—took up positions nearby.

MJ murmured into the comms, her voice losing its playfulness.

"We've got suits. Not your usual trash thugs. Someone's paying for this."

Natasha's voice sharpened. "Stay on them. Whoever this is, they're not street-level."

Talia hummed. "Big money. Someone's got plans."

MJ returned to her window shopping act, but her fingers twitched, her Symbiote armor ready beneath the designer disguise.

Inside the warehouse, Gwen closed her eyes briefly.

Almost there.

Fracture's voice curled around her thoughts like smoke.

**"The spider draws near her prey… and soon… the prey will reveal his face."**

Wanda's voice cut through the comm line—low, firm, resolute.

"Hold. Soon we will bring her home."

Gwen's fingers curled slightly in her lap.

Soon.
