Chapter 1 - [ PROLOGUE ]

[ PROLOGUE: MATTHIAS PLIGHT ]

August 2, 2006. In the middle of the night, droplets of rain could be seen and heard falling from the sky without mercy at all to whom it might befall on. Thunder from time-to-time accompanying it, causing whoever hears it to fear— may it be the elderly, the young, or dogs, doesn't matter.

In the gloomy city of Gotham, one such example could be seen. As hundreds of huddled together housing, made out of materials with questionable origins sway from left-to-right, from right-to-left. Making the people living inside it, the poor, to fear for their lives.

Inside one of those said apartments includes a man in his early 20s, with unkempt hair and a questionable lifestyle— this man is fearing for his life, yes. But contrary to what the other Gotham Residents are fearing, this one is instead having an existential crisis.

Primarily because he is just now realizing that he spawned in Gotham City of all the ungodly places that he could spawn in. [ "Call me Judas Iscariot and fuck me sideways, why Gotham of all places. Why Gotham, why!?!" ]

He who lives in the 21st century has access to the internet, arguably unlimited if not for the WiFi of his neighbours shutting down at random intervals. Still, that access to the internet was enough for him to know the inside and outside of DC like the back of his hand. Detective Comics.

And at the moment, he is at the lowest and most dangerous city in that once thought to be fictional universe— the infamous Gotham City. [ "Fuck." ]

He groaned protest under his throat, which is still reddened and bruised by the fact that the original owner of this body. His variant, the man named Matthias Plight, tried to commit self death via hanging a makeshift noose by the roof of the apartment. Before then...

To say that the man's plan didn't work would be an understatement, but to say it worked would also be confusing to those who hear it.

Because at the moment the body is alive, but the soul inhabiting the said body is no longer the originally timid Matthias Plight who chose the easy way out.

No, it is instead inhabited by someone else; a foreign soul not belonging to that of this universe. Who is he exactly? Even he doesn't know, he merely knows that his thoughts relating to identity are juggled. So no name for now.

[ "Ahh, bloody hell." ] The unknown soul, or the new Matthias muttered to himself. Hissing in pain as he touches his neck. [ "Whoever this guy was, he was an idiot." ]

[ "Who would be cowardly enough to die?" ] Then he remembered what kind of corrupted city he was standing at, [ "But I guess it was kinda... valid?" ]

He doesn't support unaliving oneself. So he felt disgusted by what the original Matthias did to himself, but in seeing the state of the room he's in; one filled with cartons of takeouts, empty bottles of alcohol, and packs of empty cigarettes. He somewhat have a hint to what kind of life this body had.

[ "Even I would have given up." ] Though that didn't stop his disgusted expression from showing, and so instinctively or not, he kicked one of the empty glass of alcohol away; hitting a strike with it colliding the other bottles, clanking.

[ "Still... this is not a way a sane man should live." ]

Perhaps the original Matthias wasn't right in the head, perhaps suffering under addiction or depression. He really doesn't know, he doesn't want to, and he doesn't care enough to investigate.

[ "Where's the broom? Where's the dustpan? Where's the bag of plastics, you disgusting dumb ass." ] Directed to criticize the original Matthias. Though he believes the soul of the man is no longer there. He still said so out of spite.

The new Matthias doesn't consider himself a clean man, contrary to that actually, he lived a disgusting life. But in seeing the state of the room, he could only gag inside his mouth as he tries to frantically search for the much needed cleaning materials. To no avail, oh wow, a surprise really.

To his dismay, he couldn't find any proper cleaning materials in the room, or any trash bags he could use to throw the bottles out. Thankfully, there's at the very least dozens or-so of fast-food bags of plastic scattered around the room; yes, some are torned with holes, but the rest, they'll do.

[ "Great, loving the new life already." ]

Crouching down, he was about to grab the empty bottles of beer, ready to throw them outside, in the alleyway. But paused when he noticed something flickering in the tinted reflection of the bottle. [ "Huh?" ]

In curiosity he stared at the other bottles and could indeed see something floating above his head. He looked up and couldn't see anything. Then at the bottles again, on the reflection he could see words... So he looked more closely, squinting his eyes to do so.

[ "Holy... shit." ] And in doing that, he realized something important. He wasn't sent into this world empty handed.

Baffled, he scanned the darkened apartment for any glass of sorts, aside from the dozens or so bottles of beer and questionable liquids that is.

Then he spots one, quickly running to it in desperation to read the said text above his head; but with how the flow of the story is going, he has a rough idea.

[ MATTHIAS PLIGHT LVL. 1 ] He stands correct.

[ "System!" ] He who loves reading stories have an extensive amount of information about what a System is. For a world that doesn't lack entertainment, the soul, abused that simple fact as he went on-and-on and read books.

Simply not the informative kind, or may be the kind to make one rich, or guide one to a better understanding of himself. He did not care. Instead, he read ones which are purely there to entertain— and about more than half of it includes the so-called cheat code they call, the System. Lovely.

Though it varies from person-to-person, from story-to-story, or even the way the said System functions. The single fact that he has one means his life is about to be easier than he initially thought, if not, then at least more entertaining than before or the current. [ "How do I use this?" ]

[ "Uhh- inventory." ] No response.

[ "Okay, that doesn't seem to work." ] He then continues, not at all bothered by the unresponsive System; or the fact that he is talking to himself. Alone. [ "Shop." ] No response.

[ "Then... missions?" ] No response.

[ "Okay this shit's broken." ] He tried the big three, and there was no response. Either the System is retarded or this System is faulty; perhaps even different from the ones he reads about in great detail.

Supposedly the System's task is to make the main protagonist overpowered in the beginning, or make them grow step-by-step through challenges. To do this, the said System has features— which the System seems to lack.

Scratching his head, Matthias wonders if he should create a new makeshift noose and continue where his predecessor failed at, mainly because he is doomed to die in a genocide anyways; sooner or later.

In th DC Universe, crime is rampant. Villains with mental illness or ones twisted desire roams the street freely, causing chaos and havoc wherever they go. Let's not worry about the other cities and stick to Gotham for now.

This includes but not limited to: Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Penguin, Hugo Strange, Ra's al Ghul, Hush, Poison Ivy, Riddler, Two-Face, Clayface, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, Black Mask, Mad Hatter, Deathstroke, Man-Bat, Bane, Professor Pyg!

[ "I'm gonna get eaten out there, bullshit!" ] He hadn't yet listed the crimes they are most known for, but one could already have a grasp on what kind of kink each and every single one of those monsters are into.

And that's only for Gotham. It would be great if he could only worry about Gotham, but Matthias alone wasn't sent to Gotham. He wished. It would be difficult, but it is preferable to living in any of the DC Universes.

In Gotham, he would only need to worry about certain freaks, in a certain time— mostly night. He could even leave the city and go live somewhere else comfortable, perhaps in the middle of the jungle if push comes to shove.

But no. No matter what he does, let's say he avoided everything. He would still have the possibility of dying an horrible death. Why so? Because some kinky universe, or multiverse level threat would wipe out Earth, or the whole of DC Multiverse in a flash.

It had been done in the comics, it had been done in the animated movies, it had been done to the movies. So do you think that he, Matthias an ordinary normie would have a chance without a System? I don't think so. [ "Fuck you." ]

[ "Why even send me here just to simply fuckin' die! I hate you!" ] Directed to the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient being watching him from above or outside the known time, space, and mass. Who he knows is watching.

[ FUN FACT: Biblically, Judas Iscariot belonged to the original 12 Apostles of Christ. He followed Christ for 3 years believing that the Messiah would be a political or military figure who would free Israel from Roman occupation. He was wrong. His journey culminated with him betraying the Messiah for 30 pieces of silver. In regret and sorrow, he would later hang himself on a tree and die in the field of land bought by the said 30 pieces of silver. Matthias would later replace him as Apostle, recorded in the Book of Acts. ]
