Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Beginning

In this world, people have superpowers. Scientists are still trying to figure out the cause of this, although the prevailing theory is that the powers are akin to a virus and are spread by being around those with superpowers.

These superpowers can range from teleportation, telekinesis, invisibility, shapeshifting, and many more—anything you can imagine is a possibility. However, only 5% of the population of Earth currently has these powers.

I, myself, am one of the many who don't have superpowers. To be frank, I am quite glad that I do not have any, as those who do are mandated to report to the government about it. Who knows what kind of morally and ethically corrupt things they might do to me there? They might dissect me or use me as a test subject. There have even been leaks about such things happening online, so that is a no for me.

There are also supervillains—these are people who got their powers and decided to use them for their own selfish desires. And where there are supervillains, there will always be superheroes. These individuals do their best to stop the supervillains, as often the government's law enforcement just isn't powerful enough to handle them. Superheroes are often looked up to by the public, with several fan websites dedicated to them. This goes for the villains as well, with anarchists and keyboard warriors supporting them.

Anyhow, as I was saying, personally, I am satisfied with my mundane, ordinary life. My name is Finn Gray. I have no relatives, as my house was destroyed when I was younger, with my parents inside, while I was playing outside. What happened was that some hero and villain were fighting, and the hero got smashed into my house, breaking it down and killing my parents. They were my only relatives, so after that, I was put in an orphanage.

There, I made two lifelong friends who I now work with in the office: Liam Drake and Asher Bennett. The office we work at is the Superhero Association, which manages superheroes by letting them know when a villain appears. It's quite a good job, as it pays well.

Today, I woke up just like any other day in my plain old studio apartment, which costs an extortionate price as it is in London and near the Superhero Association. Anyhow, I was getting sidetracked. I stretched and walked into the bathroom. I looked in the mirror while brushing my teeth. I looked like an ordinary man. If I had to describe myself, I'd say I have dark hair with bags under my eyes, a pale complexion that looks like I've never seen the sun, and a frail body that seems to have never lifted anything heavy, devoid of hardships. I am relatively tall at 6'1".

After finishing the process of brushing my teeth, I walked out the door and banged my toe on my desk. It hurt like hell. As I jumped in pain, I started to fall right onto my hardwood floor. I desperately wished for something soft to break my fall, and just as my face was about to hit the ground, I saw a pillow appear out of thin air. It stopped my fall at the last second and saved me from bashing my face against the floor.

Immediately after I made contact with the pillow, it disappeared as if nothing had ever been there. I looked around, confused.

After sitting down on my sofa/bed and thinking about it for a moment, I began to recall all of the previous events to try to deduce what had happened.

I walked out of the bathroom, stubbed my toe on my desk, and jumped. I immediately lost my balance and fell toward the floor. At that moment, I was desperately wishing for something soft to be there.

Could I have awakened some sort of superpower? Though it wouldn't make sense, as I haven't been around anyone with powers. I tried thinking of something I wanted to appear. This time, I focused on a pillow. I stared at the floor, wishing for a pillow to appear, and I felt a smooth, calm wave wash over me, like a hot summer sea. Then, a pillow appeared. I must not have noticed the feeling before because of the adrenaline from hitting my toe, but the second I got distracted, the pillow disappeared.

I jumped up in excitement, only to fall back down again because of my toe. Luckily, I was on the sofa/bed, so it was a soft landing. Anyhow, I looked at the time and realized it was already 8 AM, and I was going to be late for work.

I decided that it was already too late to leave, especially considering how I hurt my toe, so I called in sick and decided to experiment more with this new power.
