Chapter 21 - In Sickness and in Health.

"May I please speak with Khun Wittikarn Sermsongwittaya's family?" the doctor asked gently, his voice calm but serious as he approached.

The doctor cleared his throat gently, his eyes soft but serious as he faced the anxious family gathered in the waiting room.

"We're still doing everything we can for Khun Wittikarn," he began, his voice calm but steady.

"Because we don't know exactly when the sleeping pills were taken, some of the usual treatments—like pumping his stomach—aren't safe or effective anymore."

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.

"Right now, we're focusing on monitoring his breathing and heart closely, supporting his body while his system works to process the medication. We've given activated charcoal to help reduce further absorption, but beyond that, it's a waiting game."

Mom's hands trembled as she gripped the edge of her chair. The doctor softened his tone,

"I know this is hard to hear. But we're doing everything possible, and he's in good hands. We'll keep you updated every step of the way."

With a final glance toward the worried family, he slipped quietly back into the ER, the heavy door closing softly behind him.

As the doctor disappeared behind the sliding doors, the room fell into a heavy silence. mom clutched my old sweater, her knuckles white, while dad paced nervously near the window. A few whispered prayers floated in the air, mingling with the soft hum of hospital machines from the corridor. No one spoke, but the weight of the unknown pressed down on them all. Seeing Kit grow pale but trying so hard to stay strong for me, P'May finally decided to break the silence.

"Kit, are you okay? You don't look well." She took a slow step toward him, her eyes filled with concern. "How about letting Khai take you home?"

Before she could say more, Kit's knees buckled and his head drooped as if he were about to faint. Instinctively, she reached out and caught him, steadying him with a gentle but firm hold.

"We'll update you if anything changes," she said softly, her voice calm but reassuring.

"Umm, or I could call P'New and wait with you until he arrives," Khai offered gently, helping him sit on the waiting bench outside the ER.

Kit nodded quietly. Khai pulled out his phone and called P'New to update him on Kit's condition.

After hanging up, P'New hurried to the hospital. A few minutes later, he called Khai to let him know he had arrived. Khai helped Kit to his feet and accompanied him outside to meet P'New.

"Ohh, you little rascal. You knew you weren't feeling well but still sneaked out to visit Wit," P'New said, gently scolding him as he helped Kit into the car.

"Phi, you said Kit wasn't well. What's wrong?" he asked, his eyes full of worry.

"Oh, no need to look so worried. The doctor said he developed a fever from grief over Max's death, but he should be fine as long as he's well taken care of," he replied reassuringly.

"Ohh, I thought it was a couple's thing—now that Wit is sick, his wife gets sick too," he said with a playful grin.

"Ohh, you little rascal. Are you crazy? If something like that existed, it would've happened to me and Pharm ages ago," he teased with a grin.

Then his expression softened as he asked, "By the way, how's Wit? Is he showing any improvement?"

"He told us that his condition isn't looking very optimistic at the moment," he said, his voice heavy with concern. "All we can do is hope his body begins to recover naturally."

"Then..." Khai's phone rang before P'New could say anything.

"Khai, he's awake," came a woman's voice from the other end.

Khai looked at P'New, his eyes shining with excitement.

"You should go see him—I can't, since you're barely holding yourself together—but remember to keep me updated," P'New said, patting him on the shoulder before getting into the car.

"I will!" Khai shouted after him, then took off running toward the hospital.
