Eating the stale bun, the man tried not to choke on the hard meal. It was better than what he had had lately, he was sure of it. In fact, his stomach felt so empty that nothing was filling it up. Every bite that he took was like throwing a pebble down a chasm, expecting it to change something.
But at the same time, something was better than nothing.
Finishing off the offering, he found the small cot that could only fit a single adult person. Not bothering with the pillow or blankets, he collapsed, ever so grateful that he had a bed to sleep in.
Closing his eyes, he dreamed of bodies piling on top of him and dead eyes staring into his own.

"This one has been in less than 24 hours," muttered one of the guards as he and his partner did the rounds. On the back of each door was written what time the person entered, so that it was easier to know who was to be released and when. "We should leave him."
