🌑 Chapter 49 — The Last Shadow
The first light of dawn spread across the Crimson Dusk Pack grounds.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, there was silence.
No howling.
No fighting.
No screams.
Only the soft sound of wind moving through the trees.
Ivy stood in the middle of the courtyard with Xander held tightly against her.
She could still feel the warmth of the Fifth Mark fading from his skin.
"It's gone," Jayden whispered.
Ivy nodded.
"Completely."
Jake approached them slowly.

"You did it."
Ivy looked at Xander.

They gathered inside the Alpha Hall.
Ancient books were placed across the table as Elira explained everything.
Ivy stood beside Jayden while Xander sat between Jake and Kael.
Aslam and Lyra stood nearby.
"The First Seal was never created to destroy the Void," Elira said.
Jake frowned.
"Then what was it created for?"
"To keep the Void asleep."
Silence filled the room.
Ivy slowly understood.
"And our parents were its Keepers."
Elira nodded.
"Your father and I inherited the duty. But when we discovered that someone was trying to break the seal, we knew our children would eventually become targets."

"Yes."
Kael stared at the old map.

"The one my mother gave me?"

Ivy stared at it.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you weren't ready."
Ivy sighed.

Xander ran toward them with his backpack.
"I'm coming too!"

"No."

"This one is dangerous."
Xander frowned.
"I'm part of the team."
Jayden crouched beside him.
"You are. But being brave doesn't mean you have to face every danger."
Xander looked disappointed.
Ivy knelt beside him.
"Your job is to stay safe."
He thought for a moment.
"Promise you'll come back?"
Ivy hugged him.

Xander looked at Jayden.
"You too?"

By sunset, Ivy, Jayden, Jake, Kael, Aslam, Lyra, Elias, and Elira reached the ancient mountain.
At its base stood four enormous stones.
The same symbols appeared on each one.

Ivy stepped forward.
Her necklace began glowing.
A doorway appeared.
But before anyone could enter—
A voice echoed through the valley.
"You really thought you could end this?"
Everyone froze.
A shadow appeared on the mountain wall.

Ivy's eyes narrowed.
"Malthor?"
The shadow laughed.
"No."

"Then who are you?"
The shadow slowly turned.
Two silver eyes opened.
"I am what existed before Malthor."
Elira's face went pale.
"The First Shadow."
Jake stared at her.
"You said it was a legend."
"It was."
Elira's voice trembled.
"Until now."
The shadow continued.
"You defeated my vessel."
Ivy raised her hands.
"We defeated your doorway."
"Yes."
The shadow smiled.
"But you forgot something."
The ground trembled.
"The doorway was never the source."
The mountain split open.
A wave of darkness surged upward.
Ivy immediately created a barrier.
Jayden moved beside her.
Jake and Kael prepared themselves.
Elias stepped forward.
"Wait."

"What?"

The darkness began to crack.
The First Shadow roared.
"You cannot defeat me!"

"We don't have to."

"We just have to close the door."
She raised both hands.
Four elements erupted around the mountain.
Fire.
Water.
Wind.
Earth.
Jake and Kael joined their energy with hers.

Elias placed his hand against the stone.

The mountain shook.

The darkness vanished.
