🌒 Chapter 48 — The Choice
The pack bells continued to ring.
Warriors rushed into position as the shadows gathered beyond the gates.
Ivy stood beside Jayden, Jake, Kael, Lyra, and Aslam.
But she couldn't take her eyes off Elias.
He stood beside Malthor.
Alive.
The last time she'd seen him, he had sacrificed himself inside the temple.
Now his eyes were different.
One was silver.
The other was completely black.
"Elias..." Ivy whispered.
He looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
Malthor smiled.
"You see? Even your precious traitor has returned."
Jake stepped forward.
"What did you do to him?"
"I didn't bring him back."
Malthor's smile widened.
"The Void did."
Ivy's hands began glowing.
"Let him go."
Elias shook his head.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because I'm the one keeping it connected to me."
Everyone fell silent.
Malthor's expression hardened.
"Elias!"
Elias ignored him.
"Ivy, listen carefully."
He looked toward Xander.
"The Void can't enter this world unless it has a living connection."
Ivy understood.
"Xander."
Elias nodded.
"Malthor wants the boy because the Fifth Mark gives the Void a doorway."
Jayden stepped in front of Xander.
"Then he'll never get him."
Malthor raised his hand.
The shadows surged toward the gates.
"Then take him."

The Battle
The gates exploded inward.
Shadow creatures rushed into the courtyard.
Warriors charged to meet them.
Jake shifted, silver fur flashing beneath the moonlight.
Kael unleashed a golden wave of energy.
Lyra raised both hands, creating a protective barrier around the pack house.
Aslam fought beside Jayden.
Ivy stood at the center.
Fire.
Water.
Wind.
Earth.
All four elements answered her.
She lifted her hands.
A massive wave of elemental energy swept across the courtyard, forcing the shadows backward.
Jayden stared at her.
"Remind me never to make you angry."
Despite everything, Ivy smiled.
"Good advice."
Then Malthor appeared behind them.
Jayden spun.
"How did you—?"
Malthor reached toward Xander.
Ivy reacted instantly.
She threw herself between them.
The attack struck her barrier.
The ground cracked beneath her feet.
Malthor smiled.
"You're becoming stronger."
Ivy pushed back.
"So are you."
Their powers collided.
The courtyard filled with light.

Across the battlefield, Jake spotted Elias.
He moved toward him.
"You don't belong with him."
Elias looked at Jake.
"I know."
"Then fight."
"I am."
Jake frowned.
"What?"
Elias pointed toward Malthor.
"I'm not fighting for him."
He looked at the black mark covering his arm.
"I'm keeping the Void trapped inside me."
Jake's eyes widened.
"That's impossible."
"Apparently not."
Elias pulled back his sleeve.
The mark was spreading.
"I don't have much time."
Jake understood.
"Then tell me how to stop it."
Elias looked toward Ivy.
"The four Keepers must combine their powers with Xander's."
"And then?"
"The Fifth Mark will choose."
"Choose what?"
Elias looked toward the sky.
"Whether this world belongs to the Void..."
He paused.
"...or to you."

The Five
Ivy heard him.
She turned toward Jake.
"What did he say?"
Jake ran toward her.
"We have to do it now."
Malthor laughed.
"You cannot control the Fifth Mark!"
Ivy looked at Xander.
He wasn't crying.
He wasn't afraid.
He simply held out his hand.
"I can try, Mommy."
Ivy's heart tightened.
She knelt beside him.
"You don't have to do anything."
"But everyone is fighting because of me."
"No."
She held his face gently.
"We're fighting because we love you."
Xander smiled.
"Then let me help."
Ivy looked at Jayden.
He nodded.
"Together."
Jake joined them.
Then Kael.
Then Lyra.
The five stood in a circle.
Their hands connected.
Silver.
Violet.
Gold.
White.
And finally—
Gold again.
The energy exploded.
Malthor stumbled backward.
"No!"

Xander's eyes turned completely golden.
The battlefield disappeared from his mind.
He found himself standing in a vast white space.
Across from him stood a gigantic shadow.
The Void.
"You belong to me."
Xander shook his head.
"No."
"You carry my mark."
"I don't care."
"You carry my power."
Xander looked down at his glowing hands.
Then he smiled.
"I carry my family's love too."
The Void became furious.
"You are only a child."
Xander raised his head.
"But I'm not alone."
Behind him appeared Ivy.
Jayden.
Jake.
Kael.
Lyra.
And Elira.
The Void recoiled.
Xander reached toward it.
"I choose my family."
The Fifth Mark shattered.

The Dawn
A blinding light swept across the battlefield.
Every shadow creature disappeared.
Malthor screamed as the darkness surrounding him broke apart.
Elias collapsed.
The black clouds above the pack split open.
Moonlight returned.
Then silence.
Ivy opened her eyes.
Xander was lying safely in her arms.
His mark was gone.
She hugged him tightly.
"Mommy?"
"I'm here."
"Did we win?"
Ivy smiled through tears.
"Yes, baby."
Across the courtyard, Jake helped Elias stand.
Malthor was nowhere to be seen.
Kael looked toward the mountains.
"It's over."
Elira shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled softly.
"It isn't over."
Ivy frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Elira pointed toward the horizon.
The first rays of sunrise were appearing.
"The darkness is gone."
She looked at the five of them.
"But now the world has to learn what happens when the Keepers are finally free."
Ivy looked at her siblings.
Then at Jayden and Xander.
For the first time, she felt no fear when she looked toward the future.
Only hope.
But far beyond the mountains...
a single black feather drifted down from the sky.
And a voice whispered:
"This was only the beginning."
