Chapter 336 - Chapter 336: Professor Hagrid’s Progress

The incident where Malfoy and Harry were scratched by the Hippogriff was ultimately treated as an ordinary classroom accident.

Once Malfoy stopped insisting on pursuing the matter, something like this barely counted as an issue at Hogwarts.

However, Professor McGonagall still criticized Hagrid for being too reckless in his teaching—he shouldn't have introduced such a dangerous creature right at the beginning.

"So, I thought… maybe Flobberworms would be a good idea," Hagrid said, reflecting on his mistake. "I just found a whole nest of them recently—and was planning to give them to Aragog as a little snack…"

"Pfft—!"

Ryan spat out his tea in shock, coughing as he exclaimed, "What? What did you just say?"

"Flobberworms!" Hagrid repeated, puzzled by Ryan's reaction. "They're harmless, toothless little worms—not dangerous at all."

"I know… but…"

Ryan turned to Wade, who simply raised an eyebrow at him before saying,

"We'd like to continue learning about Hippogriffs next class, Professor Hagrid. Gryffindor and Slytherin both got to have the lesson, but we didn't—that's not fair."

"But they're dangerous…" Hagrid hesitated.

"You've already figured out how to ensure safety, haven't you?" Michael chimed in bluntly. "And honestly, no one wants to see Flobberworms. If you do that, every student will hate you."

Michael was usually diplomatic in his speech, but he had learned that with this new professor, it was best to be direct—otherwise, Hagrid wouldn't take the hint.

Hagrid was still uncertain. "But what if a student gets scared and provokes Buckbeak or the others…?"

"Then why not prepare some harmless creatures as well?" Wade suggested. "Like Bowtruckles? Those who want an adventure can interact with the Hippogriffs, and those who don't can play with the little creatures."

"Would… would that work?" Hagrid asked hesitantly.

"Of course!" Michael said confidently. "Everyone will love it!"

Although Hagrid was the professor, he was new to the position and had just made a major mistake. His confidence was at an all-time low, making him easy to persuade.

"W-well… alright then… I'll give it a try…" Hagrid said nervously.

Michael and the others immediately cheered, and Wade smiled as well.

Care of Magical Creatures is a required subject for at least three years, and Wade was determined to avoid spending those years dealing with nothing but worms and Blast-Ended Skrewts.

That was why he was so proactive in helping smooth things over.

Fortunately, Hagrid wasn't the type to stubbornly cling to his own ideas just because he was older or more experienced with magical creatures. He was open to the students' suggestions.

In fact, even after Michael and the others had left, Hagrid sought Wade out again and invited him to his hut.

"Thank you, Wade."

Hagrid said, "I know that Malfoy originally had no intention of letting me or Buckbeak off the hook… His father is very powerful—he can even make the Ministry of Magic listen to him… But you convinced him… You saved me, truly…"

As he spoke, Hagrid sniffled and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

"Don't say that, Hagrid."

Wade replied, "If Malfoy had gotten hurt in Transfiguration or Potions class, he wouldn't have made such a fuss—especially since it was his own mistake to begin with. I just didn't want to see him use such tactics to drive out a talented teacher."

Hagrid sighed, and looked a little ashamed. "Sigh… I-I can hardly call myself a talented teacher… I got a student injured in my very first lesson…"

"Be more confident—you're not the only one."

Wade patted his arm reassuringly. "Neville broke his arm in his first flying lesson and ended up covered in boils on his first day of Potions. Yet, Madam Hooch and Professor Snape never let that make them feel insecure!"

Hagrid couldn't help but laugh. "Don't let them hear you say that… Haha… But I do feel a lot better. Oh, right—I have something for you."

He stood up, and supported the oil lamp that he accidentally bumped with his head. Then, he retrieved an old chest from a nearby cupboard, wiped the dust off, and handed it to Wade.

"What's this?" Wade asked curiously.

"Something I found while patrolling the Forbidden Forest."

Hagrid sat back down and prodded the fire with a pair of tongs. A tin kettle sat above it, heating water.

He said, "There are some scales that Norberta shed, unicorn tail hairs, and a Erumpent's horn, among other things. I remember you mentioned these could be used in alchemy, so I've been collecting them for you."

He had actually planned to save this as a Christmas present, but in his excitement, he decided to give it now.

Wade opened the chest and saw the neatly arranged materials inside, and pursed his lips slightly.

These materials… even for Hagrid, they must have taken a long time to gather.

For example, the Erumpent—a creature as large as a rhino—stores explosive venom in its horn, making it extremely dangerous.

And unicorn tail hairs—far more valuable than ordinary hair—are best when freely given. If the hair is forcefully plucked, it will not carry a curse, but it may not work as effectively for potions or alchemy.

The best materials come from a unicorn's willing gift, but those sold on the market had no such guarantee.

Hagrid might seem rough and carefree, but when he put his heart into something, he could be more thoughtful than anyone.

Just like in their first year, when he went out of his way to collect old photos of Harry's parents and made him a photo album.

Wade accepted the chest without any words of repayment—he simply said, "Thank you, Hagrid. I really love it."

Hagrid beamed with a bright smile.

On Tuesday afternoon, when Wade went to the staff lounge to ask some questions, he saw Hagrid holding a thick, self-bound parchment notebook, consulting Professor McGonagall on how to be a good teacher.

"Sometimes, listening to students' suggestions isn't a bad thing. They know what they want."

Professor McGonagall said, "But you also need to come up with practical and feasible methods. Be more confident, Hagrid. You have plenty of knowledge—you just need to learn how to pass it on to your students."

Hagrid nodded seriously and wrote down every word in his notebook.

Seeing Wade, Professor McGonagall smiled and said, "When you're unsure of the right approach, you can also ask Wade and Hermione—they are both excellent students and will surely give you the best advice."

Hagrid nodded. "I will."

After experiencing a setback, Hagrid was clearly making an effort to become a good professor.

He struggled in areas he wasn't skilled in, his handwriting on the parchment was messy, and there were plenty of spelling mistakes.

But whenever he felt like giving up or taking the easy way out, he would remember Wade—who stood up for him even at the risk of offending Malfoy—Michael, who eagerly looked forward to the next lesson—and Harry, who defended him wholeheartedly despite being injured.

He knew he had to do his best.
