Two years had passed like a gentle breeze across the sea. In that time, many waves were weathered, many enemies struck down, and bonds forged through fire had only grown stronger. There were battles, training arcs, rivalries, and moments of quiet reflection, but nothing too earth-shaking had occurred in the last year.
Yet, on this peaceful evening, a quiet storm of celebration was brewing inside the modest Marine residence belonging to none other than Rear Admiral Kuina.
The house stood among a row of standard-issue Marine homes.
Tonight, though, Kuina's was decorated with soft golden lights and hanging ribbons. Balloons floated lazily across the ceiling, and a colorful banner hung proudly on the far wall above a large wooden table:
Happy 18th Birthday, Kuina!
Inside the spacious living room, laughter and idle chatter filled the air. The mood was warm, cheerful, and filled with familiarity.
Vice Admiral Luffy, now codenamed Byakko, sat on the wide couch with a smirk on his lips. The name 'White Tiger' still amused him.
"They come up with these weird names for me," He muttered to himself, chewing on a rice cracker.
Despite the formal codename, the world knew him differently. Among pirates and the civilians he'd saved, he was Divine Fist Luffy, a name spoken with admiration and fear alike.
Sitting beside him was Vice Admiral Gion, elegant as ever, dressed in a dark plum off-shoulder blouse and crisp white slacks. Her long legs were crossed gracefully, a wine glass balanced in her hand as she sipped lightly.
On the other side of the room was Rear Admiral Hina, sharp and cool in a black turtleneck dress. She tapped her fingers rhythmically on the rim of her glass as she chatted casually with Ain and Captain Kujaku, who were giggling while trying to get the final decorative candles in place on the cake.
Zoro, who never cared much for parties, leaned against the wall with a toothpick between his lips and arms crossed. A balloon had gotten stuck to his sword somehow.
"Oi... why's this damn thing stuck to Sandai Kitetsu?" He muttered, trying to shake it off.
"It's static, dumbass," Hina replied without even turning her head.
"You've been stuck to static your whole life," He shot back.
"Sharp tongue for someone with a blunt head."
Zoro smirked faintly but let it go.
One unexpected presence was Captain Issho, the blind swordsman. He sat calmly near the center of the room, a peaceful smile on his face. His walking cane leaned nearby, and although he said little, the serenity around him brought a natural calm to the atmosphere.
He wasn't supposed to be there.
He'd politely declined the invitation at first, citing age, station, and formality, but Zoro had gotten lost while trying to find the bakery earlier that day and stumbled upon Issho by accident... or maybe fate led him there.
It was Issho who guided the swordsman back to Kuina's house, gently convincing himself to stay for just a few minutes.
And now, the time had come.
The murmurs settled as the door to the back room opened, revealing the woman of the hour.
Kuina stepped into the room.
She wore a light sky-blue blouse that clung slightly to her athletic frame, paired with a short pleated skirt that showed off her toned, tanned legs, strong from years of relentless training. Her hair, slightly longer than before, framed her determined face with just the right touch of softness.
Her aura had changed. No longer the girl who once feared a future she thought was already taken from her. She was a woman now, eighteen, confident, and standing tall.
Everyone stared in appreciation, admiration, and subtle surprise.
Zoro blinked. "Tch… When did she become a lady?"
"I always was," Kuina smirked, brushing past him.
Hina whistled under her breath. "Looks like someone outgrew her training gi."
"Don't encourage her," Gion added with a smile. "She already knows she's stunning."
Kuina's cheeks warmed slightly, but she ignored it and made her way through the room. She accepted congratulations one by one—polite nods, a hug from Ain, a toast from Kujaku, and finally, she reached the person who meant the most to her that evening.
Luffy stood with his hands in his pockets, watching her with a casual smirk. "So, eighteen, huh? Feels weird seeing you like this. You're not a kid anymore."
Kuina looked at him for a moment, her smile faltering, replaced by something more real.
She suddenly stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight.
It was silent for a moment.
"…Thank you," She whispered against his chest. "For everything."
Luffy blinked, caught off guard, but then returned the hug gently.
"You saved my life. You changed it. If you hadn't told me about my condition... If you hadn't trained me... I would've never made it. I wouldn't be here. You gave me more than just strength—you gave me time. A future."
Luffy rubbed the back of her head softly. "I just followed my gut. I didn't save you, expecting anything. Just thought it'd be a waste if someone like you disappeared without making her dream come true."
Kuina smiled as she pulled back. "Then I won't disappoint you. I swear it. I'll become the world's greatest swordsman."
"Better hurry," He teased. "Zoro's been making progress."
"I'll cut that mosshead down if I have to."
"I heard that," Zoro grunted from across the room.
Gion coughed loudly, stepping in between them with a clap. "Alright, enough tearful hugs and declarations. The cake's waiting."
Kuina chuckled and walked toward the cake table. She took a moment to glance at the people around her, faces that had become dear, important… irreplaceable.
She smiled softly. "You guys… You're like family to me. I don't know what I'd be without you."
The room grew quiet again. N
Only Luffy kept chewing on his cracker. "You'd probably be dead."
Hina swatted the back of his head. "Insensitive idiot."
Kuina laughed, and it was genuine and free. She turned back to the cake, took a breath, and leaned forward.
"I wish…"
Fwwoooosh...
The candles flickered out, a trail of smoke rising into the air.
"What did you wish for?" Ain asked, bouncing slightly in excitement.
"If I say it, it won't come true," Kuina replied with a smirk.
"Tch, everyone always says that," Gion muttered.
"Was it about a certain tiger-themed vice admiral?" Hina asked with a teasing lilt.
Kuina didn't reply, just raised an eyebrow, enough to make Luffy chuckle and shake his head in amusement.
Cake was served, and drinks poured.
The room filled with a new energy, relaxed, joyful.
Zoro challenged Kuina to a game of rock-paper-scissors and lost six times in a row.
Issho told stories of old swordmasters and offered a few bits of wisdom.
Ain tried to get Luffy to dance, but Hina intercepted him, dragging him into a clumsy but fun sway.
Gion sat beside Kuina on the couch later in the evening, watching the others enjoy themselves.
"You've grown up well," She said.
Kuina sipped from her juice. "That means a lot coming from you."
"You've still got a long way to go, but… you're strong, beautiful, and ambitious. Just don't forget to take breaks sometimes."
"I'll try," Kuina replied, leaning back.
As the moonlight spilled through the windows and laughter echoed in the home, Kuina leaned slightly into Luffy's side, where he had settled down again.
He looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"…Thanks for coming," She said.
Luffy smirked and nudged her shoulder. "I wouldn't miss it. You're important to me, Kuina."
Her heart fluttered just a little, and she smiled to herself.
