Chapter 244 - 244 - Gambler's basis

*

Yggdrasil assumed the appearance of the most recent vessel, Arin. While the role of Lastia is fulfilled by the Primordial Shadow. Memories that didn't belong to her stuck out like sore thumbs, a life not yet lived by her flashes past her mind and engrains itself into her body. The divine technique 'level limitation' has worked its way into this false world, though everything has been recreated to an absurd fashion that it's almost indiscernible from the original.

Lastia isn't worried about these memories or the foreign yet familiar sensations taking ahold of her. She is not weak. What pushes her is her very ego, her confidence and security of her own identity as the journey's end. There are many deities involved in eschatology, prophecies of end times, fairy tales of the apocalypse. She is none of these. Authorisation restriction didn't work on her, she isn't such a simple being that it could be summed in a single sentence.

"You've been staring at me for a while, but are we going to enter?" (Lastia)

"... The key's with you." (Yggdrasil)

"Ah... Right. Wait a sec." (Lastia)

She fishes into each pocket, her left hand feels a slight tingle. It urged itself to dive into the left pocket, but just to be sure she wanted to check the right first. Yggdrasil stares intently at Lastia, marvelling at her own recreation of her master. She used the memories she held as the basis for this world, but that didn't mean they were gone. She wouldn't ever sacrifice her time with her creator even if she died.

"There it is, let's head in. Arin." (Lastia)

"... Alright." (Arin)

A speck of dust almost hits her face as she enters the front door. Late evening had struck and without natural light piercing through the thick blinds, there was a dead silent and dim environment inside. Lastia could feel her own breathing stop as she intently gazed at her surroundings. Unfamiliar, yet familiar. The storm of emotions that Lastia first experienced when hit by the curse. For a while, she tried to hide it. She didn't think magic existed, believing she had come down with a chronic illness.

She didn't want anyone to worry for her, to drag people into her life and make them sad. She no longer remembered her childhood friend, Arin, and she only talked to Sariel briefly when Traces first attacked her. Surely, Arin had been watching all along. It's even more likely that Arin has been protecting Lastia all up until that moment. When a Trace attacks and time stops, she never truly felt like she was alone. That must have been Arin's fault, though it never mattered much to her. Lastia lived as she wanted, and she wanted to help others so she eliminated Traces that appeared.

She took in both the good and the bad, Arin had already seemed to be hiding things from all the way back. It was simple, Arin rarely talked about herself and only discussed about Lastia. It wasn't anything too drastic that gave herself away, Lastia felt that secrets were best kept. Not to mention the firepower that Arin brought to the table when dealing with Traces, she concluded early on that not prodding the bear's den was for the best. Having Arin by her side was much more important than whatever Arin was hiding.

"... It'd take extra effort to wipe my memories, but giving me memories that don't belong to me is a different story. What a bothersome account." (Lastia)

"I disagree. Giving you extra information helps to facilitate... Your assimilation better. This way, you understand the roles we play more intimately." (Arin)

"I see... And your role is to feed me information. How convenient. So, when will you wipe them?

I'm just warning you, when you try to kill me, my actual memories will kick back in. There is no escaping me." (Lastia)

What she bore was not some flimsy 'concept of the end' that could be countered by an opposing divinity. Conceptual attacks are powerful, they stretch beyond the grasps of infinity and the material world. However this is accompanied by a dreadful weakness to other concepts, the weakness is so startling that it might give one sided advantage to the opposing party.

"I won't. I'll do neither of these. If your memories are gone, everything will be pointless." (Arin)

"... If you wipe them, it'll be easier for you to instill empathy. After all... You're trying to recreate the conditions for that, aren't you? " (Lastia)

Arin falls silent for a moment. The Primordial Shadow, Lastia is right. A short moment of contemplation was easy to observe, Arin isn't particularly skilled at lying. She has only known battle, her skills don't extend far beyond that. But she smiles gently, her thoughts don't wander far.

"Yes, that's right." (Arin)

"... Our starting point is different from what you went through... Though this must be like a new game plus for you. Our powers will be too much for your world. Yours will be.

And, did you really think I'd let you achieve it?" (Lastia)

" You will. It's in your nature, human nature. " (Arin)

The other party scoffs at the idea, turning her face to the side in a disgruntled manner.

" Tch! You underestimate me too much, gambling on my nature? What gives you the confidence? Even gamblers should have some silly basis for their bets!" (Lastia)

"it's simply, my lovely Lastia will always do her best to love the world that only gave her a single day to live." (Arin)

"... Madness, but not surprising. I'll patiently wait for what you have in store." (Lastia)

Obtaining implicit permissions, Arin continued on with her plans.

" Let's see... What do you think of your home? Think it matches the original? " (Arin)

"... Hell if I know! This I could only manifest when the Oblivion Magia is deployed first, in other words the 'me' of this universe has only just been born. " (Lastia)

" Isn't that just perfect? Then you don't have to try too hard to match her. " (Arin)

" You cheeky bastard! So? What do you have in mind? " (Lastia)

As she spoke, Lastia stifles a yawn. A novel experience.

"You're tired, aren't you? For now, get some rest. School starts tomorrow." (Arin)

"... School?" (Lastia)

"Yes. That place of education. Surely it's in the imported memories?" (Arin)

"I know what that is. It just sounded too absurd. What use would I have for it?" (Lastia)

"To meet people..." (Arin)

"... Of your choosing? Isn't the most important one already in front of me? She didn't talk much with others at all." (Lastia)

Arin sat down, sinking into the sofa. Lastia looked on for a few seconds before following suit. Alright, she still has the initiative. Surely... It'd work.
