Instantly, he angled his ears. Who could it be? If he were at Mainecroft Hall, he would have determined it already to be Lady Wilmot, or one of the 'talented' ladies she persistently sent to him. But they were not at Mainecroft Hall.
He glanced into the hallway.
In hastening strides, someone crossed the doorway, rushing up the stairs.

His brows furrowed. He had never accord her one for needless haste. Whatever was the rush? What urgency possessed her now?
A few minutes later, the butler announced another arrival.
Mrs Rose came to the parlour door.
Stephen rose as soon as he saw his wife, and walked to her at the door. Upon seeing him, she smiled instantly.
"You have returned," he said warmly, taking her hand. "I had not expected your return until late. Was the market suddenly rendered dreary?"
