In the end, Sasuke spoke up, though his answer was somewhat evasive.
He couldn't bring himself to say that the Rinnegan was the ultimate evolution of the Sharingan—because he couldn't explain how Nagato, who wasn't an Uchiha, had obtained it.
The others were unsatisfied with his response and wanted to press further, but a sudden shift in the battle between Nagato, Might Guy, and Rock Lee interrupted them.
BOOM!!!
Nagato was kicked down from the sky by Guy, crashing directly onto the Ten-Tails' head.
"ROAR!!!"
A deep, guttural growl erupted from the Ten-Tails as several thick wooden vines burst from the skin on its head, rapidly intertwining to form a downward-facing hemisphere.
This dome of wooden vines firmly encased Nagato, shielding him from Guy and Lee's follow-up attacks.
"This is…"
Sasuke narrowed his eyes slightly, a suspicion forming in his mind.
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!
Guy and Lee, master and disciple, relentlessly assaulted the wooden hemisphere. The vines were continuously damaged but just as quickly regenerated.
"Fall back!!"
Other shinobi rushed forward to assist, attempting to destroy the vines with elemental ninjutsu.
Yet whether it was Fire Release, Lightning Release, or Wind Release—no matter how many techniques intertwined—the wooden vines remained largely intact even after the violent explosions.
"Guy!!"
Kakashi leapt from another direction.
Guy, understanding his intent, jumped as well, allowing Kakashi to step on his shoulder and propel himself even higher.
"Kamui!!!"
Kakashi's left Mangekyō Sharingan spun rapidly, and the space around the wooden vines began to distort violently.
Wooden splinters scattered as the thick vines were torn apart by the swirling spatial vortex, vanishing in an instant.
"Did we get him?"
Everyone inside the barrier watched nervously.
However, once all the vines had been consumed by the vortex, Nagato's figure was nowhere to be seen.
"Did he merge back into the Ten-Tails again?"
Suppressing the strain in his left eye, ignoring the bloody tears streaming down his face, Kakashi intensified his ocular jutsu.
The spatial vortex above the Ten-Tails' head expanded abruptly.
"If that's the case, then I'll destroy the Ten-Tails itself!"
The overwhelming spatial jutsu continued its relentless assault, instantly obliterating several of the Ten-Tails' horns before tearing through the skin on its head.
"AHHHHHHH—"
The Ten-Tails, still pinned down by the "Myōjinmon," let out a piercing shriek that nearly ruptured everyone's eardrums.
"It seems we can no longer afford to wait."
Nagato's calm voice echoed from an unknown source.
By now, the battlefield had been cleared of the seemingly infinite Ten-Tails clones, all wiped out by the Allied Shinobi Forces.
At this moment, every single person on the battlefield heard Nagato's whisper.
In an instant, tens of thousands of gazes converged.
The next second, the Ten-Tails' colossal body began shrinking at an alarming rate.
Its ten tails retracted first, slipping free from the "Myōjinmon," followed by its torso and head.
In mere moments, the Ten-Tails—originally spanning over a kilometer in length—was rapidly compressed toward a single point, as if being swallowed by Kakashi's spatial jutsu.
The massive displacement of air created a hurricane-like suction, forcing the shinobi to brace themselves and steady each other.
Soon, the Ten-Tails had condensed into a white, human-sized sphere floating in midair.
"Ugh…"
Kakashi, unable to sustain his ocular technique any longer, clutched his throbbing left eye, panting heavily.
"That is…"
Sasuke locked eyes with Neji, who stood among the crowd.
"What is that?" Gaara turned to Sasuke, seeking answers.
Sasuke's expression darkened. "Nagato… he's been waiting for this moment."
CRACK.
At that moment, the white sphere hovering in the air began to fracture.
A dazzling white light erupted as the outer shell shattered, falling away in pieces—revealing Nagato in an entirely new form.
"He has become the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki!" Sasuke declared loudly.
The Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki!
Everyone who heard Sasuke's proclamation immediately grasped the terrifying implications of those words.
"This is bad… He really has become a Jinchūriki."
Hashirama withdrew his hands from the barrier, shifting into a battle stance.
"That bastard!" Tobirama's face twisted in fury. "To think it would come to this."
At this moment, an overwhelming pressure descended upon everyone present. All eyes were fixed on Nagato in the sky.
White fragments continued to rain down as Nagato brushed away the keratin-like growths on his face.
Now bare-chested, his skin was covered in scale-like armor, with several rows of black tomoe patterns etched across his torso and back. Spiked protrusions had emerged along his spine.
A cold glint flashed in his violet eyes as he slowly raised his right hand.
"Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees!!!"
Hashirama launched the first attack.
Massive trees erupted from the ground, encircling Nagato in an instant.
"Hah!"
Hashirama clasped his hands together again.
The verdant forest twisted inward, attempting to bind Nagato completely.
"A technique of this level…"
A black orb materialized in Nagato's palm.
"Is meaningless."
The orb rapidly expanded, and wherever it touched, the trees silently disintegrated into nothingness. Nagato effortlessly broke free from the wooden prison.
"How?!"
Tobirama and Hiruzen were even more shocked than Hashirama himself.
To them, Hashirama's Wood Release had always been the epitome of strength. Yet now, it had been effortlessly erased by an unassuming black orb—a sight that shook them to their core.
Nagato moved like the wind, weaving through the crowd.
Shinobi screamed as they were either obliterated or collapsed in droves.
Anyone who came into contact with the black orb in his hand met the same fate as Hashirama's trees—their bodies vanishing without a trace.
"Scatter!!"
"Get out of there, now!!"
The Kage, hearts heavy with grief, roared commands in desperation.
"Neji!"
Sasuke retreated to Neji's side. The two exchanged a glance, and in unison, Sage Mode markings appeared on their faces.
"Let's go."
In an instant, they accelerated, charging against the tide to intercept Nagato head-on.
"CLANG!"
Sasuke's lightning-wrapped sword clashed against the black orb in Nagato's right hand.
"Sage Art: Gentle Fist—Vacuum Palm!"
Needle-like chakra shot from Neji's fingertips, aimed at Nagato's vital points.
In response, Nagato extended his left hand, conjuring another black orb that instantly morphed into a circular shield, blocking Neji's attack.
Simultaneously, spikes erupted from the black orb in his right hand, lashing out at Sasuke.
Sasuke stomped the ground, flipping backward to evade.
Neji's feet blurred as he instantly repositioned behind Nagato, striking again with pinpoint precision.
When Nagato turned to defend against Neji, Sasuke teleported in for another assault.
The two youths moved in perfect sync, successfully pinning Nagato in place.
The other shinobi quickly retreated from the central battlefield, watching from a distance in astonishment.
"It's Sage chakra!" Tobirama quickly deduced. "It seems that terrifying black substance can only be countered by natural energy!"
"I see!"
Hashirama exhaled in relief, clasping his hands together. Sage markings emerged on his face as well.
