Konan stood alone atop a tall building at the edge of the village, her gaze fixed intently on the battlefield beyond the water.
"So, this is where you were, Konan."
A spatial vortex swirled in the air beside her, and "Tobi" emerged from it.
"Heh." His hoarse laughter echoed. "Nagato seems to be enjoying himself quite a bit."
"It's merely a delay tactic," Konan replied calmly. "Nagato needs time to fully adapt to becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. Moreover, until we confirm that the Nine-Tails truly cannot arrive, it's unwise to act prematurely."
"I see."
"Tobi" chuckled softly again. "I doubt Kisame can snatch Naruto away from the Fourth Hokage."
"Then he will deliver the news of the war to Naruto," Konan said. "Given the Nine-Tails jinchūriki's personality, there's a high chance he'll come to the battlefield on his own."
"Tobi" nodded in agreement. "That is indeed a strong possibility."
"Then we'll wait and see."
Konan's eyes remained locked on Nagato's battle within the red barrier on the battlefield.
"The outcome Lady Konan desires should soon be realized."
A white humanoid figure slowly rose from the floor beside them.
"Kisame has already located the Nine-Tails jinchūriki."
"You've returned, Sophon." Konan turned to look at Sophon's eerie face.
"Yes." Sophon nodded at her.
"If this war continues like this, Lord Nagato's victory is all but assured," he said, turning his gaze toward the battlefield. "No one can stop him now."
...
"Haah… haah… Thanks… Gaara."
Jiraiya panted heavily, staring at the sand that had shielded him.
BOOM!!!
Another explosion rang out as the sand was blasted apart by a laser. Jiraiya barely managed to dodge.
"So, this is the extent of the Five Kage?"
Nagato's body hovered high in the air, looking down at the battered figures below.
"Tch… I'm not the Hokage, Nagato."
Jiraiya reflexively retorted.
"Though you're not the Hokage, your strength surpasses his, Jiraiya-sensei."
Nagato flung a black rod toward him.
Clang!
Jiraiya blocked it with a kunai.
In the next instant, a barrage of black rods came flying at him.
Gritting his teeth, Jiraiya forced his aching muscles to move, desperately deflecting the rods with his kunai.
Meanwhile, the four Kage who were still in the fight launched another assault, trying to relieve the pressure on him.
Yet, Nagato remained untouchable.
Using the Preta Path's ability to absorb chakra-based techniques and the Deva Path's repulsion and attraction to evade or deflect taijutsu, he effortlessly held his ground against the combined might of the five "Kage."
Coupled with the devastating firepower of the Asura Path's mechanized weaponry, the five "Kage" had been forced on the defensive ever since severing his connection with the Ten-Tails.
However, as time passed, more and more shinobi had breached the barrier, fighting through the Ten-Tails' split bodies to attack both it and Nagato.
Finally, the four Kage and Jiraiya, who were nearing exhaustion, got a chance to catch their breath.
"Konoha Daisenpū!!"
A figure cloaked in green chakra spun through the air, kicking away the black rods aimed at Jiraiya.
"Nice timing, Guy!"
Jiraiya finally had a moment to breathe again.
"That guy can absorb chakra, so taijutsu is the best way to fight him. Just be careful not to get caught."
After quickly relaying the warning, Jiraiya resumed panting heavily.
"Understood, Jiraiya-sama!"
Guy gave a thumbs-up before flashing in front of Nagato and throwing a punch.
"Konoha's Blue Beast, Might Guy, has arrived!!"
"You again!"
Nagato blocked the punch with his mechanical arm.
"Konoha Senpū!!"
Guy spun midair, his leg wreathed in dazzling blue chakra as he delivered a spinning kick.
"Still relying on these boring moves?"
Nagato simply levitated higher, easily evading Guy's attack.
"Dynamic Entry!"
Another figure, also enveloped in green chakra, suddenly drop-kicked Nagato from behind.
"Lee!"
Guy cheered, leaping up in perfect sync.
"Konoha Gouriki Senpuu!!"
A powerful elbow strike slammed into Nagato's chest, sending him crashing down.
"Guy-sensei! Konoha Senpū!"
Lee followed up with another spinning kick.
"Whoa… they're insane!"
The shinobi fighting below gaped as the two green-clad figures darted through the air and across the ground, battering Nagato like a training dummy.
Meanwhile, the four Kage and Jiraiya had regrouped within a protective circle formed by their allies, taking the chance to recover.
All five chewed on soldier pills as they watched Guy and Lee's relentless assault.
"What's going on?" Ōnoki muttered, his voice muffled by the pill. "At this level, Nagato should be able to counterattack. Why is he just taking the hits?"
"Could he be out of chakra?" Mei suggested.
"Impossible," A snapped. "Don't forget that bastard already absorbed a ton of ours!"
"I don't know what's happening," Gaara said grimly. "But we should warn Lee and Guy to be cautious."
"You think… he's preparing some ultimate technique?" Jiraiya frowned.
Gaara shook his head silently. "Just a bad feeling."
"Hey, Gaara."
Sasuke suddenly appeared beside him.
"What were you saying?"
"Sasuke?" Gaara glanced at him before looking back up. "Nagato's behavior is strange."
"Is it?"
Sasuke followed his gaze and immediately agreed. "True. Someone with the Rinnegan wouldn't be this passive."
"Hey! Uchiha brat!"
Ōnoki suddenly cut in. "From your tone… you seem to know more about the Rinnegan?"
This old man is sharp!
Sasuke's expression flickered.
"So it's true."
Ōnoki scrutinized his face closely.
"..."
Sasuke remained silent.
"I recall that Uchiha Itachi is your brother, and Uchiha Madara was your ancestor. Did they tell you something?"
A also fixed his gaze on Sasuke.
"Heh." Mei smirked, her red lips curling. "Then why don't you share with the class, handsome?"
"Please, Sasuke."
Gaara's tone was earnest.
"..."
Jiraiya pretended to be occupied with the sky and ground, hiding his discomfort.
"..."
Sasuke stayed quiet.
"What? Are you hesitating?" Ōnoki smiled "kindly." "Since you're here, doesn't that mean your brother and clan have taken a side?"
Mei batted her lashes. "Come on, pretty boy. If you've already chosen to fight for the Allied Shinobi Forces, don't be stingy with a little intel."
"..."
'I shouldn't have come.'
Regret filled Sasuke's heart at that moment.
