Chapter 78 - V2 Chapter 25 The Signal

"Are you sure about this?" My brother asked for the thirteenth time.

"Would you stop asking that already!" I snapped back at him.

Things had not gone as I had hoped to say the least, in fact everything we're starting to spiral out of control. My capture team had been annihilated by a giant fucking wolf of all things and their were reports of at least two other mutants somewhere on the continent.

"I refuse to have all my efforts be for nothing!" I growled, unable to hide the frustration in my voice. "This is the only way to get back everything that I have invested into this damned project."

I glared back at him, daring him to argue back, he didn't. "Listen, all we need to do is broadcast the signal and everything will be fine." I sighed in annoyance.

A low frequency signal, one capable of attracting all of the escaped assets for miles in every direction. The moment it was sent out however, it would drive the afflicted creatures completely mad to say the least, in fact they would do anything in their power to reach and destroy the source of that signal the moment it started broadcasting.

It just so happened that my company building had a massive antenna on the roof, one that I could use to send out said signal and attract all of the mutants to the city. Once the military had gone ahead and killed all of them for us we could then secretly collect samples from their corpses to continue our work, it would also allow us to see how our assets did in direct combat situations.

"It's just that...what about all the civilians?" He asked as we finally made our way up the roof.

(This idiot...) I grumbled as I walked to the antenna's control panel.

"Thankfully most people have already been evacuated because of the bombing, so it is fine." I huffed without looking back at him.

"R-right, I had almost forgotten all about that."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes at him. "Of course you did..."

"Anyway, do you have any more complaints?" I ask while tapping on the console.

"No, no I don't."

"Good." I said before pressing the button that would broadcast the signal. "Now, let's get this over with."

I watched as the convoy of trucks entered the portal back to my sanctuary, each one carrying something different. From creatures and plants, to books, furniture, vehicles and even mining equipment, all of that and more was being transported in large amounts. Of course I would have used the transport capsules I bought before coming to this world but that wasn't really feasible, they couldn't hold everything and we didn't have time to waste unfortunately.

Moving on though, the only thing left on the island, besides myself and my humanoid followers that is, were the rapidly growing mutants and our now empty HQ. There were still some of the creatures in their containment cells mind you, however most had long since grown far too large to fit inside of the building itself and were now scattered out across the island waiting for commands.

"With this everything has been moved to the sanctuary as you instructed." I nodded in appreciation.

"Thanks for that Edward."

"It's no problem at all, I'm just doing what I can to help." The old man in question smiled humbly.

"Well, you're doing a great job." I responded. "Honestly your management skills have been extremely helpful over the past few months."

"I appreciate the praise but it's not necessary." He hummed, his pleasant expression remaining the same as he looked at the last of the trucks as they made their way into the portal.

"I don't understand how you and Ophelia are related, you're so calm and patient while she's..." I tried to say only to freeze when a familiar voice echoed from behind me.

"She's what?" Ask the woman in question.

I coughed awkwardly. "Nothing, nothing at all." I said, causing Edward to chuckle with an amused look on his face.

"Whatever..." Ophelia huffed before motioning towards the person next to her. "Anyway, nut job here needs to talk to you apparentl-HEY!"

"Yes yes, while listening to the both of you chatting is very interesting, we have a bit of an emergency on our hands at the moment." Jonas announced as he pushed past Ophelia without a care in the world.

(Great...) I muttered internally at these words, why?

One reason was because despite the apparent emergency the mad scientist before me didn't look worried in the slightest, in fact from the creepy smile on his face he looked genuinely excited about the whole thing. A second reason was because the last time he came to me to speak about an "emergency" he had claimed that his assistants were all slacking off and refusing to work, they, in fact, were not slacking off in the slightest, they were actually all on strike. And why were they on strike you might be asking? Because he had apparently been trying to feed them to his mutant creations, all so that he could see their "effectiveness" against various combatants, unarmed combatants I might add.

"What kind?" I sighed, already dreading the answer.

"You see, I was going about my business checking on my adorable little ones, when suddenly they started to become rather restless." He explained with a thoughtful look. "Thankfully the hive mind let me understand what was going on somewhat, from what I can tell they seem to be feeling rather annoyed by something."

"I see..."

As if in response to his question a link abruptly opened up in the hive mind as a familiar voice spoke in my head. <>

<> I asked, already having a pretty good idea as to what was happening.

<> He answered immediately, confirming my suspicions.

(So, it has begun...)

The signal, it was something Energyne had made in hopes that it would let them weaponize, or at least control, their mutants in some way. Although that "control" basically boiled down to pointing them in the right direction and making them destroy everything in that path until they reach the source of said signal. Oddly however, the signal actually caused mutants to work together to destroy it, however the moment the job was completed they would more than likely murder each other given the chance.

While yes, our mutants didn't have the innate aggression toward the signal like Energyne's mutants did, it was still rather irritating to them. To put it simply, it would be the equivalent to an incredibly obnoxious and loud dog whistle, one that could be heard from miles away.

<> I hum in appreciation.

<>

I smile before continuing. <>

<> He growled in both a mixture of relief and frustration. <>

<> I asked with clear pity in my voice.

<> He sighed.

After saying bye to him I turned back to the three that were still standing around me. "They have begun broadcasting the signal."

"Ah!" Jonas hummed as he nodded in understanding. "That would explain it."

"About fucking time." Ophelia huffed.

"So...what now?"

I mused in response to Edwards' question. "Now? Now we start the end game."

"It is time that we finally put the last part of my plan into motion." I muttered as I continued.

"Edward, please have everyone make their way back to the sanctuary, there is no longer a need for them here"

"Very well." I nodded at his response before turning to the mad scientist sanding nearby.

"Jonas."

"Yes?"

"Once everyone's out of here you have my permission to unleash your experiments." I said, causing his eyes to light up in excitement.

"All of them?"

"Yeah, all of them."
