Chapter 477 - Chapter 477: Long Overdue (4)

[Third Person Pov]

Atlas erupted from Charydis in a burst of light and heat.

A roaring, volatile golden aura of fire sheathed him from crown to heel, the flames so dense they warped the air around his body into a shimmering heat-haze. Every step left scorched footprints that hissed and smoked.

His features had twisted into something primal—jaw set like carved stone, eyes blazing with the same molten gold as the aura, veins standing out along his neck and forearms like cords. Even Artemis, who had faced gods and monsters without flinching, felt her fingers lock on bowstring and arrow. For a single heartbeat the huntress hesitated.

Lucian did not.

He watched with cool detachment as his newest soldiers—shadow wolves the size of warhorses—surged forward in perfect formation. They leapt as one, claws and fangs gleaming with condensed darkness, slamming into Atlas from every angle. The impact should have driven any ordinary demigod to the ground. Instead Atlas merely roared. The sound tore through the Domain like a physical blow. An explosion of golden energy detonated outward, vaporizing the wolves mid-maul. They dissolved into scattered wisps of black smoke that the Domain readily empowered.

Before the last wisp faded, the twin brother bears—Minor and Major—were already upon him. Atlas met them head-on. Bone met divine muscle. Claws raked across the golden aura and found almost no purchase. In three brutal exchanges he had them on the defensive; in five he was the one driving them back across the black stone.

He moved like a living storm, zigzagging through the ranks of shadow-stone soldiers that rose to bar his path. Spears shattered against his shoulders. Swords glanced off the fire-wreathed skin. Wherever he passed, the soldiers crumbled into gravel and shadow. Dark roots erupted from the ground at the Lorax's command, coiling around Atlas's legs and torso with the strength of ancient oaks. For a moment they held.

Then Ashura stepped from the gloom.

The multi-armed warrior unleashed a barrage of fists, each strike carrying enough force to pulverize stone. Atlas took the hits without yielding ground. Golden fire flared brighter with every impact.

"Nothing can hold me in place any longer!" Atlas roared, voice raw with fury.

Muscles corded. The roots screamed as they tore free. Atlas ripped himself loose in a spray of splintered darkness and closed the distance on Ashura in a single explosive bound. Hand-to-hand combat erupted—brutal, efficient, merciless.

Atlas drove his javelin into the ground like a stake, then pivoted and drove a crushing kick into Ashura's kneecap. The joint buckled with a crack. Ashura dropped to one knee.

Atlas was already moving. He seized the back of Ashura's head and slammed it forward onto the upright javelin. The point punched through skull and came out the other side in a burst of black smoke. Ashura's body collapsed, dissolving into the Domain's hungry shadows.

High above, on the jagged edge of a cliff that overlooked the black battlefield, Lucian sat with one knee raised, elbow resting casually atop it. His green cape billowed behind him in the unnatural wind that always stirred inside his Domain.

He watched the golden figure carve destruction wherever it stepped, and a thin, thoughtful smile touched his mouth.

'He fights like a berserker,' Lucian mused. 'Except he isn't nearly as mindless as he wants everyone to believe. It's a performance. A very convincing one.'

His eyes narrowed. The Domain's pressure should have been grinding Atlas down by now. Shadow soldiers grew stronger the longer the fight continued; the very air thickened with Lucian's power. Yet Atlas's aura burned just as fiercely as it had at the start. If anything, it was growing denser.

'The Titan of Strength and Endurance,' Lucian conceded silently. 'I have to respect that much.'

He did not rise. He simply spoke, voice calm and carrying.

"Captain. Rear your heads. You have a job to do."

From the cliff face directly beneath Lucian, shadows split open. One massive hydra head rose first, lifting him into the air. Eight more heads uncoiled around it in a crown of scaled necks and glowing eyes. Nine throats opened as one. The collective roar that followed shook the entire Domain; even the shadows themselves trembled.

Different elements gathered in each maw—fire, frost, lightning, poison, pure force, and stranger energies still. The nine beams lanced outward simultaneously, converging on Atlas. They met in a explosion of multicolored fire that bloomed upward until it nearly kissed the vaulted ceiling of the Domain. The shockwave flattened everything for a hundred meters in every direction.

When the smoke and falling embers finally cleared, Atlas still stood.

His coat and shirt had been reduced to scorched strings hanging from his shoulders. His pants were burned away past the knees. Cuts and bruises marked the skin beneath the fading golden fire, yet none of them looked deep. He was breathing hard—not from exhaustion, but from pure, concentrated rage. With a contemptuous flick he tore the ruined fabric away and spun the javelin once in his hand, the weapon's tip leaving a brief trail of molten light.

"I understand now why Lord Kronos has set his eyes on you," Atlas said, voice low and rough. "You are one of the few truly dangerous demigods I have ever faced. Unfortunately, you are also the most insufferable."

Lucian rose smoothly from the hydra's central head, green cape settling around him.

"You call me dangerous after this little warm-up?" he asked, almost amused. "Funny. This is mild compared to what I can actually do."

"Like I said," Atlas sneered. "Insufferable."

Every muscle in the Titan's body locked at once. He cocked his arm back and hurled the javelin with every ounce of strength and fury he possessed. The weapon left his hand with a sound like the sky tearing open. It did not aim for Lucian. It struck the cliff face beneath the hydra instead.

Stone exploded. An avalanche of black rock and shadow cascaded downward. The hydra's necks writhed as the ground dropped out from under them. Lucian simply leapt, body flipping once in perfect control, and landed lightly on the battlefield below. Behind him the ruined cliff continued to rain debris in a thunderous curtain of stone. He began walking forward through the falling rubble as though the destruction were nothing more than weather, eyes locked on Atlas the entire time.

"And like I said… mild."

Lucian's voice carried easily across the ruined battlefield as he spread his arms wide, palms turned skyward.

"Bloom."

Two perfect spheres of absolute darkness blossomed in his hands. The suction hit instantly—violent, hungry, absolute. Shattered stone and drifting rubble behind him jerked forward as though yanked by invisible chains, accelerating into the twin voids. Anything that crossed the event horizon was reduced to fine, glittering sand before it ever reached the core. Even ambient light bent and stretched, swirling into the singularities until each black hole was crowned by a thin, blood-red halo of compressed photons.

Lucian flicked his wrists.

One singularity, then the other, shot toward Atlas like twin meteors of pure negation.

Atlas did not dodge.

He stepped into their path and caught the first core bare-handed. The force drove him backward several meters, heels carving deep trenches through black stone. Before he could fully plant himself, the second singularity arrived. He seized it with his free hand.

Veins erupted across his forearms, neck, and temples like cords of molten iron trying to burst free. The golden aura around him flared white-hot in protest.

"AHHHHHH!"

The roar tore from his throat as space itself began to scream. The two black holes strained against his grip, warping reality between his fingers. Sparks of raw energy—neither light nor shadow—arc-discharged between his knuckles. The air pressure in the immediate vicinity became crushing; Lucian's remaining shadow soldiers staggered, Artemis's boots slid backward across the stone, and even the Domain's ambient darkness recoiled.

Atlas was forcing the singularities closer.

Centimeter by centimeter they drew together, their event horizons distorting, merging, screaming. When the two became one, the resulting singularity pulsed with catastrophic density. Atlas's entire body trembled under the strain. Muscles stood out in stark relief. Sweat flashed to steam against his skin.

Then, with a final, guttural snarl of effort, he crushed his hands together.

The singularity shrank—first to the size of a grapefruit, then to the size of a handball—until it vanished inside the cage of his fingers as he clenched his hands into a fist. Crimson beams of light stabbed out between his knuckles like the last protests of a dying star. Atlas raised that fist high and brought it down.

The impact was not merely physical.

A silent white flash detonated outward, flooding every corner of Lucian's Domain. Shadow soldiers evaporated mid-stride. The black stone underfoot cracked and glazed. Lucian threw up layered wards and barriers for protection in an instant before the wave reached him; Artemis crossed her arms in front of her face, divine energy flaring in a desperate shield. The sound that followed was like the shattering of an enormous pane of glass—sharp, final, and absolute.

Lucian felt the connection snap.

His Domain, the carefully woven pocket of reality he had spent so much power maintaining, collapsed in a single catastrophic instant under the sheer, unrelenting strength of a Titan.

---

Artemis clenched her hands over the reins of Sébastien, letting the memory settle. The small circle of demigods and hunter around her watched her with varying degrees of awe and disbelief.

"I don't think I've ever seen Lucian look so genuinely happy," she said, a dry edge to her voice. "You could tell he was savoring every second of it."

Thalia snorted softly, she had an affectionate smile on her features. "If there's one constant about Lucian, it's that the man loves a good fight. The more outmatched he looks, the wider he smiles."

Percy shook his head, a reluctant grin tugging at his mouth. "He was the same with Heracles. That fight is still legendary. It's honestly one my favorite battles I've seen him partake in"

"Or so I've heard," Artemis replied, the faintest smile ghosting across her lips. "Taking one of Heracles' teeth is still considered one of his crowning achievements as a demigod."

Annabeth's gray eyes glinted with amusement. "He still has it, by the way. Keeps it in a little velvet box like it's a family heirloom."

A ripple of quiet laughter moved around the group.

Artemis's expression sobered as she continued. "After the Domain shattered, everything turned chaotic. Lucian started laying wards mid-combat—expanding and folding space so that Atlas's next strike would land ten meters to the left of where he aimed. He unleashed spells, conjuring spheres of fire so dense they turned night into noon for half a kilometer. Rivers of condensed darkness that corroded anything they touched. Bolts of black lightning that left the ground as nothing but smoking ash."

She paused, remembering the way Atlas's jaw had tightened, the way the golden aura had flickered under the relentless magical assault.

"Although he tried not to show it, those spells were starting to wear on him."

Phoebe, one of the younger hunters, frowned. "I'm sorry, Lady Artemis, but that's a little hard to believe. I won't deny Lucian is strong, but you're describing a demigod pushing a Titan general of Kronos around like it was one-sided."

Artemis shook her head. "It wasn't. Not even close. Atlas was still a general for a reason. That javelin of his punched through Lucian's barriers and armor more times than I care to count. At one point…" She exhaled slowly. "Lucian lost an entire arm."

Percy and Grover both sat up straight.

"What?!"

"It was… violent, to say the least," Artemis admitted. "The limb spun through the air trailing arcs of blood. But he didn't even slow down. Tendrils of shadow erupted from the stump, snared the severed arm mid-flight, and dragged it back into place. Bone, muscle, and skin reknit in seconds under a lattice of darkness and radiance. It was one of the more unsettling things I've ever watched him do."

Thalia and Markus exchanged identical looks of fascinated horror.

"Cool," Thalia breathed, almost reverent.

Artemis's smile turned self-deprecating. "Honestly, I was close to useless for most of it. Even with the power boost and the special arrows Lucian kept feeding me, I couldn't meaningfully tip the scales. It's almost ironic—goddess of the hunt reduced to providing covering fire while two monsters tried to erase each other from existence."
