Chapter 476 - Chapter 476: Long overdue (3)

[Third Person Pov]

The entire battlefield had dissolved into an all-out war. Lucian and his shadow army stood arrayed against Atlas, who faced them alone amid the shattered remains of the forest clearing.

Their confrontation rang through the night like a thunderclap, the sound of clashing power echoing off the trees and rolling out into the darkness beyond. Atlas coated his fists in raw Titanic energy, the air around his knuckles warping and cracking with heat. Every blow he threw was brutal and explosive, each impact powerful enough to crater the earth and send shockwaves ripping through the ranks of the shadows. Lucian's army answered as a single, coordinated front—an endless tide of darkness that refused to break.

Ashura and Golem surged forward first, their massive forms slamming into the ground with such force that tremors raced outward in every direction. Atlas planted his feet, raised his guard, and ruptured both of their heads with a single, devastating strike. The shadows simply regenerated, heads reforming from swirling black mist even as the rest of the army pressed the attack without hesitation.

Oni and Ogre charged in next, moving in perfect tandem. One swung a cursed odachi in a wide, whistling arc; the other brought a massive axe down like a falling guillotine. Their weapons sang with malevolent energy as they sought to overwhelm Atlas through sheer ferocity and timing.

Behind it all, Lucian stood like a conductor at the heart of an orchestra of war. The night denied him the full radiance of his Brightheart form, but he no longer needed it. He had long since outgrown its purpose. Sentinel armor of glistening silver enveloped him from head to toe, the Earth Sentinel sequence fully awakened. A luminous green magic circle bloomed over his hands as he claimed authority over the very ground beneath them. With the smallest gesture he began to reshape the battlefield itself.

…

"I've never seen a mortal wield power quite like his," Artemis said, her voice quiet but clear as she recounted what she had witnessed. She stared off into the distance, eyes distant with memory. "I'm aware that mages and witches use the mist to influence terrain to their advantage… but with Lucian it was different."

The others rode in silence, the steady rhythm of their horses the only sound. They waited, completely enthralled, for her to continue.

"As a goddess I am more perceptive than most, especially at night beneath the moon. Lucian didn't simply influence the environment with magic. He commanded it. And the earth… the earth was more than happy to obey."

…

Lucian made a simple, almost casual gesture.

The ground rumbled. Then it rose.

Both combatants and the surrounding field began to lift as Lucian formed a sheer cliff of solid stone beneath them, casting a long, jagged shadow across the clearing below. Higher and higher they climbed until the full scope of the battle became visible—Atlas standing defiant against the relentless waves of the shadow army.

Atlas stepped forward and clapped his hands together. A destructive wave of pure Titanic force exploded outward, reducing several shadow soldiers to scattered wisps of darkness. Those wisps drifted back, already beginning to regenerate, while Lucian calmly ordered the second wave forward.

Murder, Baron, Duke, Aladdin, Crove, and Raveon—his spirits, demons, and angel-forged shadow soldiers—swooped down from the night sky like living blades of darkness.

Lucian raised one hand toward Artemis.

She looked down and watched the shadow beneath her feet shift and solidify. Bartholomew, the great shadow raven, let out a sharp caw as he rose from the darkness, carefully securing her before carrying her aloft into the cold night air.

Lucian slowly rotated the magic circle in his palm, channeling positive energy to empower and expand his spells. Blessings and enhancements flowed outward. One spell altered Bartholomew's size, swelling the raven until it could bear Artemis's weight with effortless strength. Another gesture, another glowing circle aimed directly at her, and Artemis felt a field of pure energy wrap around her body.

Her vision sharpened to crystal clarity. Strength flooded her limbs. Focus crystallized into something absolute and deadly. She reached back for her arrows and found her quiver full once more—replenished and humming with power.

A fierce smirk touched Artemis's lips.

Kneeling on Bartholomew's broad back, she nocked an arrow, drew the string to her cheek, and released. The shaft screamed through the air, trailing radiant energy. One after another she loosed them, each arrow falling like an artillery shell. They struck the ground around Atlas in a relentless barrage, detonating in brilliant, concussive explosions that lit the night and forced even the Titan to brace against the storm.

"Enough!" Atlas roared, his voice cracking the air like a whip. "Just who exactly do you think you are, brat?!"

He stood amid the cratered earth, Titanic energy still coiling around his fists, eyes burning with ancient fury. "I have faced armies of gods and monsters. I have endured punishment for millennia. I have commanded legions of Titans and stood as the General of Kronos himself. Your little shadow army is nothing—nothing—compared to the forces I have crushed beneath my heel!"

Atlas raised one massive hand toward the night sky. High above, a single star flared brighter than the rest, then tore free from the heavens. A colossal javelin of pure Titanic force plummeted downward, its tip screaming through the air. It clipped one of Bartholomew's wings mid-flight, sending a spray of shadow feathers scattering, before slamming into the center of the battlefield with apocalyptic force.

A wave of energy exploded outward. The blast swept across the clearing in a single, merciless surge, reducing Lucian's entire shadow army to formless red-and-black wisps in an instant. The ground itself cracked and smoked. Artemis tumbled through the open air as Bartholomew's wing was shredded—yet the great raven's regeneration kicked in at once. Dark feathers reformed in a blur, and he dove, catching her safely in his talons before she could fall more than a few meters.

High above on the cliff's edge, Lucian stood unmoving.

An intensity burned deep within his crimson eyes. His green cape billowed behind him in the rising wind, the moonlight glinting off the silver plates of his Sentinel armor. He looked down upon the devastation as though it were little more than an inconvenience.

"You wish to know who I am?" Lucian's voice carried across the ruined field, calm and cold. "Then buckle up."

He crossed his index and middle fingers together.

"I am Lucian Blackheart—son of Medea, the Witch of Betrayal, Hades, Lord of the Underworld, first born son of Kronos. I'm also a student of Hecate, the Goddess of Magic. Acknowledged and Blessed by Heracles. Adopted and favored by Persephone herself. I carry more titles and achievements than I care to list right now… because if I started, we would still be standing here until the sun rises."

Darkness began to swirl around his feet in a rapid, tightening circle. Power spiked from his body in visible waves, the air itself growing heavier.

"All I will say is this: who or what you are matters very little to me. Your name didn't scare me when I was ten years old… and it sure as hell doesn't scare me now."

His eyes locked onto Atlas with absolute certainty.

"You may have fought and led countless armies. But you have yet to witness one like mine, cultivated through my journey and trails."

Lucian's voice dropped into a resonant command that seemed to vibrate through the very fabric of the night.

"Domain Expansion: Court of the Black Sun."

The darkness at his feet erupted outward in surging black waves, swallowing the entire battlefield in an instant. The ground beneath every combatant turned to absolute shadow. The sky above bled from night into a deep, blood-red expanse. From the distant horizon, a massive black sun slowly rose—its light cold, oppressive, and strangely empowering.

Under that dark radiance the scattered wisps of Lucian's army reformed in the blink of an eye. Their regeneration accelerated to near-instantaneous. Auras of lethal power flared around them. Their silhouettes grew sharper, more solid, and the crimson glow beneath their shadowy forms burned brighter and hungrier than before.

Lucian clenched his fist and made a single, precise motion.

From the darkness directly beneath Atlas, Lady Whirlpool—the shadow of Charybdis herself—erupted upward in a roaring vortex of black water and devouring force. The massive whirlpool swallowed the Titan whole in a single, merciless surge, dragging him down into the depths of the domain before he could even fully react.

…

"Just how exactly did Lucian lose against Atlas?" Markus interjected, breaking the tense silence. He tilted his head, clearly confused. "From what it sounds like, he was completely dominating."

Artemis's expression hardened. She stared ahead as the horses continued their steady pace through the night.

"At the beginning, yes. That was the case. It was impressive—almost terrifying—how Lucian managed to hold his own and even seize the upper hand. But you have to understand the power of a Titan. Their strength can be more potent than even divine power… and this wasn't just any Titan. This was Atlas. Considered the strongest of them all."

She paused, then gave a small, almost reluctant shake of her head.

"It is honestly a miracle that Lucian and I managed to survive him at all." Another brief pause. "Or perhaps not a miracle. Just Lucian's quick thinking… and his refusal to ever stay down."

"So what happened next?" Grover asked, leaning forward over Percy's shoulder, eyes wide with anticipation.

Artemis shot Markus a mild side-eye before continuing.

"That's exactly what I was getting to before I was interrupted."

"Sorry," Markus muttered, raising both hands in surrender and clamping his mouth shut.
