I woke up to soft slaps from tiny hands. Blinking, I saw it was my cousin. His eyes were watery. Was he worried I had died too?
"Hey, little buddy," I whispered, immediately sitting up and reaching for him. I gently scooped Gregorio into my arms, cradling him against my chest. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
As I held him, I could feel the warmth of his tiny body against mine, and it brought a rush of comfort. His little hands grasped at my shirt, as if reassured by my presence. "See? I'm okay," I said, brushing my thumb over his cheek. "You don't have to worry."
Gregorio cooed softly, his watery eyes beginning to clear as he stared up at me. I couldn't help but smile at his adorable face, with those big, innocent eyes that seemed to hold so much trust. "What's wrong, sweetie? Are you hungry?"
I glanced around our little stone shelter, the rain outside seemed have stopped as night gave way to day. Maybe it was a sign that the future would be bright.
