Chapter 127 - Defending the Camp

I quickly looked around and nodded to myself, "I am going to use the tower; I am going to activate my camouflage, and my sniper rifle should blend in. Emma, Grab my extra magazines and put them at the top of that shitty makeshift tower, then you will back up Enyo, who will kill large groupings but stay in cover. Emma, you will find a cover that will then allow you to cover Enyo while assisting her in case we need large explosives. Meemee, your job will be reconnaissance and positioning. I want you out of sight and deploying drones. You will cover our flanks, or let us know if there is an assault coming in this direction. If we get swarmed, then you will be the one to pick them out of cover, as Emma gives them cover for fire." I snapped.

"Understood," Enyo replied.

"Understood," Meemee replied a moment later.

"Understood. You're grabbing your ammo now out of the packs. Give me a minute to get them all," Emma replied, and I moved into position.

I climbed up what was a trashy-looking tower that blocked my sight from the entrance we came in from. It was a trash spot to put their only tower to defend their mine, but it made a great tower from which I could shoot. The tower was walled in an odd way at the top where I could stand. There was a shitty little roof six feet up, providing shade as well. It was long enough that I could lie down, and with the cliff wall behind me, it was sturdy. There was a fence around it to block a lot of the sight, but whomever made it was also a little stupid or really loved me. IT had a foot cut out between the four posts and the cover, leaving my sniper the perfect place to lie down and fire without showing my barrel. I could see over them, and with my armor's passive camouflage, it would make it impossible for me to shoot next to them.

Lying down, I put my assault rifle to the side so it was not on me but in quick-grab range. Then I saw Emma climb up and put a half-dozen magazines for my rifle in. "Is this where you want them?" Emma asked seriously, and I looked at her.

I reached out and replied, "Bring them a little closer and forward." Then she moved them, and I nodded. "Perfect, you okay?" I asked as I could see her hands shaking a little, and she took a deep breath.

"Not really, but I am going to do my best. I am scared," she said, her voice full of fear. It hit me again that these are AIs with emotional feelings. Did they even know this world is just a game? Did someone explain that to them?

I shook my head and concentrated. " Overcoming fear is courage. Don't be stupid. Help your comrades when they need it and kill when you need to. Fear is good because it stops us from being idiots. Now go get Enyo ready for battle." I finished, and she nodded, her nerves clearly visible.

We had an unknown number of people about to attack our position, and I was nervous as hell, too. We were positioned to defend, but did not really have an escape plan. So I decided to make one. "Girls, we get one shot at this; if we get swarmed, we will blast our way out with the way we came in. It is the only route back to our Skimmer, and we will run our asses off while we continue to fire back at the enemy. It is not dark out, and there will be no cover, so let's kill them before they get inside this shitty little mining base." I said over the comms.

"Understood. It's good to know what to do if you order a retreat, but I am of the same understanding. Being here and killing them is better than trying to run back to where we came from," Enyo agreed, and I saw someone.

"Spotted one!" I snapped as I looked through my scope, and I saw a man come over the crest of the hill before us, blocking our sight from seeing farther. He had an assault rifle, and you could tell he was there to kill. I took a deep breath and saw a second man come up over the hill and start running down it. Then I saw a skimmer, and I moved my gun and saw a woman driving with a man in the back with something that looked an awful lot like the minigun we purchased Enyo, and so I took a breath and released it as I saw more coming, and I pulled the trigger.

It was the first shot of the battle, but certainly not the last, as I saw the hole in the glass a moment later, but to my dismay, I had missed. The seat behind her now had a massive hole through it. She was looking back as I was already getting ready for my second shot, and the loud crack of my sniper sounded again, and the skimmer started to swerve. I watched as it hit the man running in the front as it charged forward and flipped from the dead woman's body, shoving the steering device to the side and sending it off to the side. But the person in the back seemed to have jumped out while the one in the passenger seat went flying.

I did not get to see what happened with the guy in the skimmer because I aimed at the man with the minigun like Enyo, and I pulled the trigger. Much to my delight, their head exploded. "Good shot, Sleepywonder. You are doing wonders up there. Good sniping," Enyo praised, but I barely heard her.

Another Skimmer came, but this time, not alone. There were three of them, and this time, they moved to the side and split up, swerving before coming to a stop. And they all jumped out while I could not line up a shot, and suddenly, there was a cover on the field for them to stand behind. More were coming over the hill and running up, and I turned my attention to someone else. I lined them up and watched another head explode before moving on with a smile. My aim today was great, and-

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

My thought patterns were interrupted by the sound of Enyo laying down fire at those behind the skimmers. The sudden eruption of fire threw me off for a second, and I turned my attention to someone running as fast as they could down the hill, and they were about to leave my sight if they got too much farther. I took my shot at them, cursed as I missed again, and pulled out the empty magazine, switching to the next. This was the problem with small clip sizes, and I finished loading it up just a couple of seconds later.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

Enyo let another burst go, and I saw one of the Skimmers suddenly blow up, as she must have hit something inside. "We have fifteen still coming in and two skimmers coming in from the left. They are trying to flank us on the left or the side you can still see. The front is covered by Enyo. They are too scared to show their faces at this moment."

I turned and started to look out the direction Meemee had informed me of, and my face hardened, but I did not have time to think. I quickly zeroed in on a guy who had just come into my visibility from the rolling hills, and I pulled the trigger. Another head exploded, and I moved on to the next as I had not seen the Skimmers yet.

"Skimmers in two seconds, SleepyWonder," Meemee reported, and I saw them just as she finished talking. One of them just so happened to come up in a diagonal from what I was looking at, and my finger stroked the trigger on instinct, and the Skimmer, to my delight, smashed into the other. It was a great shot, but I had no time to celebrate. There were more, and I zeroed in on a guy who looked like he was in partial armor and giving orders. My finger stroked the trigger, and I searched for another target as his chest erupted from the side.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

"They are retreating!" Meemee announced, "They are running after that last round. One skimmer seems to be working, Enyo," Meemee called out.

BBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTT!

BOOOOM~!

"Skimmer down; they are running back from wherever they came. I am running drones around and seeing if anyone is trying something sneaky, but you got it; Enyo and Sleepy, they have stopped their assault," Meemee reported, and I sighed, looking through the scope. I could no longer see any-

My finger pulled the trigger as someone was running, and their legs were swept out from under them. And I did not know if I should curse or be happy. I had not meant to hit their legs. It was just that I twitched in surprise when I shot, and the barrel went down and hit the guy's legs.

I sat up, reloaded the empty magazine, and sighed, "Clean it up, ladies. Emma, come grab my extra ammo before we head out. Let's clean up a bit while Meemee keeps an eye on us. Let us get a little food in us before we go find the people who just tried to come and kill us. It will also allow us to register the kills we got here."

It took about a half hour of tense work with Meemee still in hiding, watching out for the drones. I realized about halfway through that I or Enyo should have kept on the defense while we did so, but no one else came. It seems that we scared them off in the short battle that lasted ten minutes. That is the thing with criminals; they are scared easily. Actually, I would be scared if I was on their side as well. They lost almost all of their Skimmers, and Enyo took them out when they tried to run in them. That does not mean that they are out of vehicles. It was stupid to try and come in the way they did, too. We are on rolling hills with Cliffs at our backs. We were stuck, and they could have pinned us down by using the hills as cover and started shooting from a distance. Got us to take cover or take one of us down at least before moving forward and blitzing us with the skimmers.

Whoever ordered that frontal assault was a moron and got a lot of them killed for it.

We tallied it up, and we had killed fifteen people in this assault, and the rest fled with one captured alive. I put him up in the base and treated his legs so he would not bleed out. We continued to clean up, and I winced when I found the person who was flung out of the skimmer. They had their body scraped across a little rocky area, with the grass and rocks tearing a large portion of their skin off their body. They bled out for a bit before putting the gun in their mouth to end things faster. It was gruesome, but I felt no pity for it at this point.

WE collected fifteen assault rifles and ten handguns with the ammo to go along with it. The rest was scrap and rebreathers to keep us alive. We now had extras just in case one of ours broke.

As we were just about done, I started to hear screams, and I walked back into the base and found Enyo with the prisoner with a wicked smile on her face as she had a knife in her hand from god knows where. "Now, You are going to tell me, right?" She asked, her voice coy and full of hope that he would say no. I could feel it, and I found myself grinning in memories when I had done the same with subs, although not to quite this degree, and the man shuddered.

But he had some balls on him because he spat in her face instead of answering. Enyo just smiled, and she pointed at those balls, "You have some balls for a Yaglow, but I happen to know where your reproductive organs are; I will ensure that you have no more for you to spit in my face again." I shuddered, and so did our prisoner. I decided that I did not need to watch and stepped outside. The screams got louder, and I looked at the alien corpses and realized that living can be much harder than being dead.
