Amara's POV
I tried to get up on my own after Ivan left to call the doctor but I couldn't get my legs to move. It felt too weak and it was if there were no life in them.
"I'm I really paralyzed?" The thought of it made my whole body shiver. There has to be an explanation for this ? I thought wondering why he was taking long in bringing the doctor.
Ivan soon arrived in the company of two doctors and a nurse . The doctors looked worried and their gaze scared me to death .
"Can you get up Amara?" One of the doctors asked and I shook my head sideways. He looked at the other one and he nodded. They were scaring me with their expressions and Ivan looked worried.
"What's happening to her please?" He asked.
"Calm down Mr. Ivan … we need to examine her further " He replied and knelt in front of my leg.
"Did you manage to bring them out of the bed yourself?" He asked
"Yeah but it was really difficult " I replied
"Okay " he took notice of it and touched my leg lightly.
"Can you feel the touch?"
"Yeah " I nodded and I could see a sign of relief drawn on his face. He held it firmly and I winced in pain.
"Stop ! Can't you see you're hurting her!" Ivan yelled angrily in defense.
"It's part of the therapy sir… I'm sorry if I caused you pain Amara but that was needed as part of the assessment " He smiled and got up.
"So what's wrong with me please, will I be able to walk again?" I asked worriedly.
"Well from your tests , we found out that the potassium levels in your blood are low , so there was a risk for this paralysis " he said
"Do you mean she's going to be paralyzed ?" Ivan asked worriedly.
"Well her condition now is hypokalemic periodic paralysis and it's actually a temporary paralysis… she will be fine latest by 24 hours " The doctor said and I was relieved a little.
"So she wouldn't be able to walk for the next 24 hours?" Ivan asked
"That's right but she will be prescribed some drugs which can help increase her potassium levels "
"We will get her a wheelchair… don't worry Amara , you will be fine!" The nurse said and I smiled. It felt so unrealistic, never in my life did I think I would be paralyzed at a point in time. It felt like a joke to me but here I was unable to move my legs and that reminded me of how real it was .
I looked at Ivan who was still nervous and disturbed .I smiled looking at how cute he was when disturbed. I still wondered how and why he was still by my side.
"Should I help you lie down?" He interrupted my thoughts.
"Thanks but I'm fine " I replied politely.
"You don't have to feel scared Amara , we will get through this together believe me!" He said, his voice so full of compassion.
"Even though I don't know what your intentions are , I'm grateful that you are here with me " I said, placing my hands on his. My phone buzz, interrupting our beautiful moment.
"Gosh it's Madi!" I smiled and picked up.
"How could you do this to me Amara !" She said immediately after I picked up.
"What did I do ?"
"You should have informed me we were skipping school today!" She said and I laughed.
"I didn't plan on skipping school Madi "
"Don't lie to me please, you wanted to skip detention today , I bet that's why you didn't come to school but do you know you actually made your case worse?" She said.
"It's not my fault Madi I'm actually in the hospital as we speak "
"You are kidding right…"
"I'm not and …"
"Do you really mean it ?" She asked concerned
"Yeah I'm hospitalized "
"What the fuck is wrong with you… "
"I will tell you when I resume school"
"I'm coming to see you now , send me your location!"
"No Madi don't!" I said looking at my legs .
"Are you insane Amara ! You are my bff and there's no way I'm leaving you in a situation like this , please send me the address of the hospital. "
"Alright I will send it to you right after the call"
"I will hang up then… and I will be bringing the physics assignment along , I can't watch you fail!" She said and I instantly regretted putting the phone on speaker. Ivan shot me a look I couldn't make out and I felt really embarrassed.
"Are you failing any of your classes?" He asked worriedly.
"Naa ! She was just kidding .. hihi " I tried to laugh my nervousness away.
"Don't lie to me Amara!" He replied
"Stop acting like you care … it's annoying " I said and rolled my eyes at him.
"You know I care " he replied and my heart skipped a beat . The nurse knocked on the door and walked in with the wheelchair making the situation less awkward for me.
"This will be comfortable for now !" She smiled and asked if I needed assistance in sitting down.
"I've got this!" Ivan replied .
"Sorry" he said as he lift me up from the bed and placed me in the wheelchair.
"You are as light as a feather!" He teased and I unconsciously hit him playfully. He laughed and that was the most beautiful smile I've ever seen from him. It was so genuine and his dimples reflected the happiness in his eyes.
"Are you ready to go boss !" He said holding the push handles. I looked at him and nodded with a smile.
"At your service " he bowed a little and pushed me out of the ward to the hospital's cafeteria.
Ivan helped me sit down and went to order our food. I admired him from where I was seated as he was ordering the foods. He was looking super cute in his t shirt and as a matter of fact he always looked hotter in black.
"Here is your milky tea , scrambled eggs with strawberries on the side and your avocado toast!" He said as he placed it on the table.
"Why do you always do that !" I smiled
"Do what ?" He asked looking at me
"Always stating the names of every food you serve me" I bowed my head shyly .
"Have I served you before?" He asked sarcastically.
"Don't try to make me shy !"
"You already are … you can't even look me in the eye miss Amara!" He teased.
"Ivan!" I exclaimed and took a sip of the tea. It was too milky but I liked it , I just hope it doesn't make me nauseous after. I finished my food but I felt so heavy and bloated. I forgot I was paralyzed and made an attempt to stand up when Ivan was settling the bill but unfortunately for me, I stumbled and fell.
"OMG!" People in the cafeteria exclaimed and I felt really embarrassed, the worst part of it was the fact that I couldn't get up on my own.
"Amara!" Ivan rushed up to me.
"Why did you try to move?" He asked worriedly.
"I forgot!" I replied, so embarrassed of myself but he laughed at me.
"Do I look funny?" I rolled my eyes , wondering why he was not helping me up.
"It's normal " he replied and carried me up in his arms. I thought he was putting me back in the wheelchair but he carried me all the way to my ward.
"You are still light even after finishing a whole meal!" He teased as he was dropping me on the bed . I hit him playfully but he lost his balance and he came right on top of me , our lips almost touching. This was the most awkward moment I've ever experienced in my life. He was looking me right in the eye making me nervous. I slowly turned my head but he turned it back so I was facing him again. "You are beautiful " he whispered, taking notice of my lips. I licked my lips and slowly swallowed the lump in my throat. He brought his lips closer to mine and I foolishly closed my eyes, waiting for them to touch mine . After a minute of waiting, I felt his weight off me . I opened my eyes and realized he was lying in the sofa. I saw the smirk on his face and I felt so embarrassed. "How many times have I embarrassed myself today?" I thought and covered my face with my blanket .
"Oh my God Amara!" Madison stood at the door looking at me.
"Madi!" I opened my arms and she run to hug me.
"Is that Ivan?" Her jaw dropped
"Yeah guess he's tired " I smiled admiring how beautiful he looked when asleep.
"Are you two…" she giggled
"No no not at all! "I eagerly replied
"Then how come he is here" she said throwing my legs somewhere and sitting down.
"Awch!" I winced in pain
"Sorry , sorry … are you hurt on the leg?" She asked and I gave her a sad look
"I'm paralyzed " I said and I instantly regretted how I communicated it to her. Her face went pale and her mouth opened. That was the greatest shock I've ever seen on her face.
"Madi!" I tapped her before she blinked.
"This is an expensive joke Amara!"
"I'm not joking I can't move my legs "
"Stop kidding around Amara ! You can joke about fucking Drake or drinking a pool of water but this isn't right!" She yelled , waking Ivan up
"She's not joking she has a temporary paralysis!" Ivan explained. Madi looked at Ivan with shock written all over her face then looked at me too before taking the blanket off my legs to look at them.
"For how long are you going to be bedridden?" She asked sadly
"Only today!" I smiled and she still couldn't believe me.
"That's the most strangest thing I've ever heard!" She said.
"Well I'm fortunate to be the one causing you to hear it" I laughed and hugged her.
"But I hope you are able to take the physics test tomorrow or you are going to fail !" She said.
"She's failing some courses right?" Ivan interrupted.
"I'm sorry Amara but yes Ivan she needs an A in the next physics exams or she will get an F and might not be able to get into any college!" She replied and I wondered if it was necessary for her to say all that and bring up college too.
"She will get into college, I will make that possible!" He replied.
"Did you bring any of your textbooks?" He asked Madi and she nodded.
"Do you mind lending it to her today?"
"No problem , I brought it to her so she can study for tomorrow's quiz " she replied
"Will you tutor her for me please "
"Madi!" I scolded her.
"You don't have to ask Madi! I've got this " he smiled as he looked at me. I didn't like the idea of Ivan teaching me but I guess it was part of my fate , I just hope that my dumb ass head will be able to understand his teaching.
