"I was just there… levitating in a pool of darkness and remembering our last moments."
Chloe's voice became quieter as she tried to put the experience into words.
She was lying across Edward's lap on the bed, her head resting comfortably against him while he sat with his back against the headboard, listening to her without interrupting. One of his hands moved gently through her long black hair, stroking it slowly as she continued to recall what had happened after the accident.
"I really thought I was in some kind of hell," she said. "There was nothing to see, nothing to hear. I could only float there, completely alone, and all I could remember were those last moments with everyone. I kept wondering what had happened to you, Mom, and Dad. I was scared, but there was nothing I could do."
Her fingers curled slightly against the blanket.
