Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 |THE WHOLE SCHOOL WAS TALKING |

By morning, the story had already spread.

James hadn't even reached the school before whispers had begun.

Students were talking.

Teachers were talking.

People who knew only half the story were speaking as though they had witnessed everything.

One student told another that James had invited the girl to his house.

Another claimed they had been secretly seeing each other.

Someone else said the girl's parents had caught them together.

None of those stories were true.

But rumors don't need truth to survive.

They only need people willing to repeat them.

James walked through the school gates feeling every eye following him.

Students stopped talking whenever he passed.

Then, as soon as he moved away, the whispers returned.

He heard fragments.

"That's him."

"They said he…"

"I heard…"

"He was with the girl…"

James kept walking.

Every word felt like a stone thrown at him.

He wanted to turn around and scream the truth.

But he knew that would only make things worse.

He went straight to the principal's office.

The matter had officially become a school issue.

And this time, there would be questions.

James sat outside the principal's office waiting.

Then he received a call.

His mother was coming.

She had heard what happened and decided she had to be there.

She lived far away.

Very far.

But a mother's child being accused was enough to make distance meaningless.

She traveled for hours.

When she finally arrived, James stood up immediately.

"Ma."

She looked at him.

Her eyes went straight to his swollen cheek.

Her expression changed.

"Who did this?"

James lowered his head.

"I'll explain."

She touched his face gently.

"They hit you?"

He nodded.

She became silent.

I could only imagine what she felt.

A mother traveling miles to see her son standing before a school administration because of an accusation involving a student.

It was not the kind of journey any mother wanted to make.

But she had come.

She sat beside him.

"Don't be afraid," she said.

James looked at her.

"I'm not afraid."

"Then tell the truth."

"I will."

Soon, they were called inside.

The principal sat at the desk.

The girl's parents were there.

The girl was there too.

James's mother sat beside her son.

The atmosphere was tense.

The principal began by asking everyone to remain calm.

Then he turned to James.

"Explain what happened."

James took a deep breath.

He told them everything.

He explained about the romantic letter.

He explained that he had told nobody about it because he didn't believe it required escalation.

He admitted that perhaps he should have reported it.

Then he explained the evening the girl came to his house.

"I did not invite her."

The girl's father immediately interrupted.

"My daughter would not go there without a reason!"

The principal raised his hand.

"Please let him finish."

James continued.

"She arrived unexpectedly. I asked her why she was there. She said she came to visit. I asked whether she had permission to leave the boarding house. She couldn't give me a proper explanation."

The room became silent.

"What did you do next?" the principal asked.

"I decided to send her back."

"How?"

"I went inside to get money for transportation."

"And then?"

"When I came outside, her parents were already there."

The girl's father shook his head.

"That is not how it happened."

James's mother finally spoke.

"My son has just explained what happened. Let him finish."

The principal nodded.

The questioning continued.

The girl's parents insisted their daughter had been behaving strangely and suggested James had something to do with it.

James denied everything.

The principal asked the girl directly.

"Did your teacher invite you to his house?"

She remained silent.

"Answer the question."

"No."

The room changed.

James looked at her.

The girl's father looked at her too.

The principal continued.

"Did he ask you to leave the boarding house?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"And did he tell you to come to his house?"

"No."

The silence became heavier.

For the first time, the accusations began losing their strength.

But the case wasn't over.

The principal still needed evidence.

And then someone mentioned the neighbor.

A neighbor who had been nearby that evening.

A neighbor who had seen something nobody else had.

Something that could change everything.
