Chapter 53 - Chapter 53 |THE FIRST SLAP|

Before he could say another word, the girl's father stepped forward.

James barely had time to understand what was happening.

SMACK!

The first slap landed across his face.

The sound seemed to silence the entire compound.

James stood there stunned.

He touched his cheek, staring at the man in disbelief.

"Why did you hit me?" he asked.

He never got an answer.

SMACK!

The second slap came harder.

People around the house gasped.

Someone whispered, "Ei!"

Another person stepped closer, eager to see what was happening.

James tried to speak, but the girl's father was already shouting.

"You think you can do this to my daughter?"

"Do what?" James asked.

"You know exactly what you did!"

"I don't."

The man pointed aggressively at him.

"My daughter left the boarding house and came here. Why?"

"I don't know. She came here herself. I questioned her—"

"You expect me to believe that?"

"Yes, because it's the truth."

But nobody seemed interested in hearing him.

The girl's mother was crying.

The girl stood nearby, silent.

James looked at her.

"Tell them what happened."

She lowered her head.

That frightened him.

"Tell them," he repeated.

But before she could answer, her father shouted again.

"You have been talking to my daughter!"

"I am her teacher!"

"A teacher doesn't receive romantic letters from his student!"

James froze.

So they knew about the letter.

He looked around.

"How did you—"

"Don't pretend!"

The accusations came one after another.

They accused him of encouraging their daughter.

They accused him of having something inappropriate with her.

They accused him of taking advantage of his position.

James tried repeatedly to explain.

"I never invited her to my house."

"I never asked her to leave the boarding house."

"I never encouraged her letter."

"I went inside to get money so she could return."

But his words disappeared beneath the shouting.

The crowd had grown.

Neighbors stood by the roadside.

People who didn't even know James were suddenly interested in his private life.

Some whispered.

Some stared.

Others were already creating their own versions of the story.

Then came the words that hurt even more.

"We are no longer paying her school fees," her father declared.

James stared at him.

"What?"

"You heard me."

The man pointed at James.

"If you care so much about her, you can take responsibility for her."

James couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"You cannot put that responsibility on me."

"You brought this upon yourself."

"I didn't!"

But the man had already turned away.

James stood there surrounded by strangers, humiliation burning through him.

He had gone from being a teacher to being the subject of gossip in a matter of minutes.

And the worst part was that he hadn't even been given the chance to defend himself.

That evening, when he finally told me everything, I could hear the pain in his voice.

"They slapped you?"

"Yes."

"Twice?"

He nodded.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not because of the girl.

Not because of her parents.

But because he had been judged before anyone listened.

I reached for his face.

His cheek was still swollen.

I touched it gently.

"I'm sorry."

He looked at me.

"I didn't do anything."

"I know."

"But nobody wanted to hear me."

I had no answer.

Sometimes the truth doesn't arrive first.

Sometimes the accusation does.

And once people hear an accusation, they begin filling the empty spaces with their imagination.

That night, James barely spoke.

I could see how deeply humiliated he felt.

But I also saw something else.

Determination.

"They'll hear the truth," he finally said.

I looked at him.

"How?"

"The school will hear it."

And he was right.

Because the next day, the matter was taken to the principal's office.

And what happened there would determine whether James walked away with his dignity…

or carried the accusation with him for the rest of his life.
