Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 | THE BOY WHO TRIED |

Jacob slowly became part of her everyday life. At first, she was cautious. She didn't want another heartbreak. She didn't want to become attached too quickly. But Jacob kept showing up. He made an effort. He apologized for the things that had gone wrong before. He tried to make her feel wanted. And little by little, she began opening her heart again.

Their relationship became something people around them noticed. Jacob had a shop, but sometimes he would close it just to come and help them work at home. She appreciated those moments. There was something comforting about having someone who was willing to put aside his own plans to spend time with her.

She began trusting him. Sometimes she saved money with him, and whenever she had something she could give him, she did. If Jacob asked for money, she often gave it without hesitation. She didn't think much about it. She had a generous heart. When she loved someone, she gave—sometimes more than she could afford. She had already done that before. She simply hadn't learned the difference between loving someone and sacrificing everything for them.

Jacob also introduced her to his SHS friends. She introduced him to hers. Their worlds began mixing. There were conversations, laughter, letters, visits, and stories that made their relationship feel bigger than just the two of them.

Then Jacob did something that surprised her.

He composed a song for her.

She couldn't believe it. Someone had actually taken the time to put his feelings into a song. She felt special. Her SHS classmates joined in too. They made their own version, turning the whole thing into something she would remember.

Whenever Jacob brought a letter, her friends would rush to collect it. They would read it aloud to the whole class. Everyone would laugh and tease her. Soon, they became the talk of the town.

People knew about them. People talked about them. Their relationship became one of those stories everyone seemed to know.

For the first time in a while, she wasn't thinking constantly about James. She was laughing again. She was receiving attention. She was being pursued. She was beginning to believe that perhaps she really could move forward.

Maybe James was finally becoming part of her past.

Maybe Jacob was the beginning of something better.

But life rarely closes one chapter without leaving a clue about the next.

And that clue came in the form of a girl named Hilda.
