Chapter 32 - Chapter 32 |SMILING WHILE BLEEDING |

Life had become exhausting. She worked with her mother from dawn to dawn, moving through long days that seemed to have no real beginning or end. There was always something to do, something to carry, something to finish. By the time she finally rested, her body was tired, but her mind rarely was. Even exhaustion couldn't silence the thoughts that followed her everywhere.

Still, James remained one of the brightest parts of her life.

She eventually introduced him to her mother. She was nervous about it because James wasn't just another boy anymore. He had become someone important to her, someone she imagined remaining in her life for a long time. She wondered what her mother would think of him.

But her fears disappeared when her mother met him.

She liked James.

In fact, she saw something in him that touched her deeply. She said he behaved like her real father. To her mother, there was something respectful and familiar about him, something that made her comfortable around him. Hearing that made the girl happy. She felt as though two important parts of her life had finally met and accepted each other.

For once, she didn't feel like she had to choose.

James could come around and wait for her so they could go to school together. Those mornings became special to her. Even after working long hours with her mother, knowing James would be waiting gave her something to look forward to. She would see him and feel the exhaustion become lighter.

But slowly, those mornings stopped.

James stopped coming to wait for her.

At first, she noticed immediately.

Then she asked herself why.

Was he busy?

Was school becoming too demanding?

Had something changed?

She didn't push too hard.

She had already learned that asking too many questions could turn into an argument.

So she adjusted.

She learned to go to school without him.

She learned to accept his absence.

She learned to pretend that little changes didn't matter.

And then there was Joselyn.

Her name became almost ordinary.

James would call her.

He would talk to her.

Sometimes the conversations lasted for what seemed like forever.

At first, every call made her heart sink.

Eventually, she stopped reacting outwardly.

If Joselyn called, she didn't ask who it was.

If James spent a long time talking to her, she didn't complain.

If her name appeared on his phone, she looked away.

It became normal.

At least, that's what she told herself.

But normal didn't mean painless.

Deep inside, she was bleeding.

She could be standing beside James, watching him laugh during a conversation with someone else, while something inside her quietly broke.

She wanted to ask, What does she mean to you?

But she remembered his anger.

You're overreacting.

So she swallowed the question.

Again.

She had become an expert at swallowing things.

Words.

Tears.

Fear.

Suspicion.

Disappointment.

She carried them all quietly.

Sometimes, she wondered whether James noticed.

Did he see the change in her?

Did he notice that she wasn't asking anymore?

Did he think she had finally accepted everything?

Maybe.

But she hadn't accepted it.

She had simply stopped fighting for answers.

There was a difference.

She still loved him.

That was the painful part.

If she didn't love him, perhaps everything would have been easier.

But she did.

She loved the boy who had once called her seventeen times in a day.

The boy who had made her feel chosen.

The boy she had found her way back to.

The boy her mother had welcomed.

The boy she had imagined standing beside her in the future.

She loved him.

And yet she was beginning to feel alone while still being in a relationship.

That kind of loneliness was different.

It wasn't the loneliness of having nobody.

It was the loneliness of having someone and still wondering whether their heart was somewhere else.

She continued working.

She continued going to school.

She continued smiling.

She continued being James's girlfriend.

And whenever someone asked how things were between them, she could still say, "We're fine."

But inside her, another answer existed.

We're not fine.

She just didn't know how to say it.

One evening, after another long day, she sat quietly and thought about everything.

Her mother's acceptance of James.

The mornings when he used to wait for her.

The calls with Joselyn.

The arguments.

The silence that followed.

She wondered when exactly things had started changing.

Maybe there hadn't been one particular moment.

Maybe it had happened slowly.

So slowly that she hadn't noticed until she was already hurting.

She looked at her own life and realized something frightening.

She had become used to pain.

That was why she could smile through it.

She had learned it as a child.

She had practiced it through heartbreak.

Now she was doing it again.

Only this time, the person causing the pain was someone she desperately wanted to keep.

She wiped her eyes before anyone could see.

Then she stood up and continued with her work.

Nobody needed to know.

James didn't need to know.

Her mother didn't need to know.

Her friends didn't need to know.

She would simply keep watching.

Because somewhere inside her, a question was growing.

What if my heart has been warning me all along?

And for the first time, she wondered whether the thing she feared most wasn't losing James.

Maybe it was discovering that she had never truly had him.
