Chapter 51 - Her Version Of Love

Kane came out again when that happened. Casey clearly wasn't able to watch. Kane was though. He watched the whole thing from wrecking ball to disposal.

And that was that. Casey didn't ever have to think about the barn again. Kane knew Casey didn't like thinking about it. He had done his best to forget everything that ever happened there. It might be easier now that it didn't exist anymore.

His phone rang and Kane saw it was Vera. He answered it in case it was important. "What's up?"

"I was just checking to see if you were done there and wanted pizza. I don't really feel like cooking tonight," she told him.

"Yeah. I'll be there soon."

"Cool. Love you!"

Vera hung up before Kane could think of whether or not Casey would say it back. Kane wanted to say Casey wouldn't but who knew? She had already surpassed all of Kane's expectations by caring about Casey at all.

Kane knew where her house was. The address was saved in Casey's GPS, likely from when he first started going over there.

When Kane arrived, she seemed particularly exhausted. He had to ask if she was okay because Casey probably would. She buried her face in his shirt and mumbled, "Tilly hasn't been lucid the past three times I've visited her. She's getting worse."

How was Kane even supposed to respond to that? He didn't know anything about this sort of emotional crap!

"I'm so sorry," he said lamely as he returned the hug.

"It's just hard, you know? She's still so young to be dealing with this. I thought I had more time with her. I really wouldn't be able to get through this without you. I love you so much, Casey."

Kane half expected Vera to go get a knife to make him bleed when she pulled away but she only did it enough to kiss him. There was nothing pressing pulling him away this time so he was able to carry on with it until the doorbell rang. The pizza had arrived.

He couldn't hold back a curse and she laughed before answering the door. As soon as the box was set down on the table, she went back to what she had been doing.

She ended up taking him upstairs and turning the light off in what appeared to be her room before pulling his shirt over his head like this was a perfectly normal occurrence. It probably was. If this was what Casey would do, Kane had to do it too. He couldn't let her get suspicious.

It seemed like Vera didn't know about Casey's scars, considering she turned the light off in advance. Kane had already wondered if she wasn't like Candy but this proved it.

Vera loved Casey but didn't make him bleed. Her way was electrifying rather than painful. Kane's heart thudded in his ears when they were done and he wondered if Casey might be on to something by having a girlfriend after all.

If it felt this good, it was probably worth all the stress to him. He had actually done something right for once, making her want to do this sort of thing with him.

Earlier, she said she couldn't get through what was going on with her aunt without him. It was still extremely hard to believe Casey could be reliable in any way but he must be for Vera to think that.

It had been months since Kane first had thoughts about her taking care of Casey for him since Casey took care of her. Now it didn't seem quite so far-fetched.

At this rate, it seemed like her aunt would only get worse. Sooner or later, he would be all Vera had left. That might prevent her from ever leaving, even if he was…Casey. Kane had to do whatever he could to make that true. Casey needed her. Kane wouldn't mind more of this sort of treatment either.

She snuggled closer and kissed him again before letting out a small laugh as she caressed his face. "The pizza is probably cold by now but we should still eat."

"Uh huh," he said, feeling like an idiot for not being able to say anything better. Feeling like CASEY. That wasn't a good thing!

Kane was playing Casey right now though. Vera probably wouldn't suspect a thing since being dumbstruck was in character for him. Kane was in the clear.

The pizza was cold, as expected, but he couldn't care about that. He wanted more of her version of love while he was still out. Was he allowed to ask or what? It had been a really long day and he could use more of something positive.

She wanted to watch a movie though. He had to do what she wanted to keep her happy in Casey's place so he ended up spooning her as they watched. This was nice too. Kane could see why Casey took the risk to get involved with her after experiencing a bit more of what it was like to have a girlfriend.

That didn't change how risky it was though. Casey wouldn't be able to hide their scars forever. Vera's way of showing her love was different. Would she be able to accept it? Or Kane's existence if she ever found out?

He had been extremely careful all this time but the more time you spent with someone, the easier it was for them to notice if something was off about you. She knew the real Casey. If Kane wasn't extremely careful, she might figure out there was something going on eventually. Even if she couldn't exactly guess what. Two personalities in a single body would be pretty hard to guess.

He couldn't do anything riskier than Casey already had. Just keep carrying on the way he had been.

That being said, Kane wanted more of Vera's version of love. He kissed her first when the movie was over and they ended up back in her bed where she fell asleep on him after telling him that she loved him. Well, telling Casey that she loved him. It was more or less the same thing.

The distinction did bother Kane though. He would never have this as himself. She didn't even know he existed and would probably freak out if she did.
