Chapter 131 - A Fossil?

"ALRIGHT POKEMON FANS!!!" The voice was starting to get on my nerves… We stood on the deck, the sky stretched over us, and the waters were as calm as ever, almost as though it never even threw a tantrum in the first place…

Everyone else who got a flag lined up besides me, apparently Mindy got in somehow. I guess that means im not out of the woods yet…

"So as all of you may know! This event is for one thing, at least that's what we told the public!" We finally got a look at the commentator's face, his wild blonde hair and loosely done tux really gave him that energetic flair.

He stood in the middle of the "battlefield" His hand stretched out wide as he delivered the news to the onlookers who clapped softly at our efforts.

"A ticket to the next drifter games!! But would you believe it if I told you, there's something else!!?"

There were murmurs amongst us, this was my first time hearing it, I turned to mindy but she only looked more determined, almost as though something had been confirmed for her. Though now that I think about it, I never had the time to notice in the moment, but her fighting style was awfully familiar…

I don't think we battled that often before this either…

"And that is…!! This!!!" He revealed a fossil, it was placed on a pedestal in nothing but clear glass.

"This is from a pokemon excavated from the site of the fallen region!! In their vast spoils they've made a generous donation to this event in collaboration with the pokemon drift torni!!"

"Woah…" I couldn't help but exhale softly from the shock. A fossil? It seemed everyone around me had the same thought, their eyes widened at the potential of getting this for themselves. It would go for a pretty price not gonna lie…But i'm not really interested in that right now.

I watched as one of the workers here rolled a pedestal into a box right up to the announcer, his hand wasting no time to dive in and shuffle it around.

"Alright!! With that let's get to the drafts!!" With a flick of his wrist two names were drawn.

"First up we have, Ayuna and Tyler!!" I looked around in hopes of finding someone doing the same, our eyes locking almost immediately. He had purple shaggy hair, with golden eyes that were enough to pierce past mine…

Right next to him an umbreon and an espeon stood by his feet, glaring at my Zorua who nestled herself on my shoulders.

"After that we have…" He shuffled the cards around again, pulling out two other names. "Mindy and Kaluar!!"

A rough looking kid glanced at the red head, his glaze blazing with an unbridled passion, his trusty pokemon semisage mimicking his stance. Mindy however, doesn't show that guy the time of day, her eyes still glued onto the prize for some odd reason…

As the list went down we had a total of ten different battles to start off with…

"As per pokemon rules, you're only allowed three pokemon! So take the rest of the day and strategize on your teams and recuperate!! Everyone, another round of applause for our champions!!!"

The crowd erupted in cheers and applause before returning to their meal and events, some of the other trainers joining them to indulge themselves before the big day.

"I assume you are my opponent?" A soft voice called out to me, Tyler, my opponent standing right behind me with his hand outstretched for a handshake. Hesitantly I took it.

"Yeah." His pokemon refused to leave his side, circling his feet if they had to.

"You're looking to get into the drift torni right? For what reason can I ask?" He was brought up. I stood back, my reason wasn't really all that noble as everyone else's…trying to make it big as trainers, meanwhile all I'm doing was more so selfish than seeking grandeur…

"I have my reasons…" I put simply, not really saying more than that.

"Fair enough," he dropped it without a second thought, "Well I have mine as well, so I hope you understand that I can't simply let you beat me here…"

I smiled, nodding with a determined gaze of my own. "Right!"

He nodded with one of his own, though when he turned to Mindy his gaze turned more puzzled. Her Blastoise lowers its head toward her while she scratches under its jaw

"You two fought, right? I noticed your scuffle in the hall earlier today… what's up with her?"

"I'm not sure…we're not very close so…" I honestly thought I was imagining it, but thank god someone else noticed that too… In truth, the drifter's thing was her whole thing—she could be thinking of a strategy to one up me.

"Right, I need to do that too!"

"Huh?" Tyler looked towards me, but before he could even question what I meant I was already gone. Leaving for my room and shutting the door behind me.
