Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: More Like Trying to Convince Himself

"Brother, why are you catching so many cicadas?" Gu Nian reached out and poked the cicada in Little Hu's hand. The previously quiet cicada started chirping, bringing a smile to her face.

"It's for feeding the chickens. If the chickens eat these, they'll lay more eggs, and we'll have eggs to eat." Little Hu singled out one cicada whose wings hadn't been pinched off yet and handed it to Gu Nian. "Do you want to play with it? I'll give you one."

Gu Nian quickly shook her head, "No, let the chicks have it. I don't eat cicadas."

Little Hu chuckled, "Just wait, I'm going to feed the chickens with Brother San first. Tonight, I'll take you to catch the ones that haven't shed their shells, then we'll roast them. They're really tasty."

Country kids' snacks are things like sparrows and locusts that they catch themselves and roast over a fire to eat.

Gu Nian's bright eyes shone, "Little Hu is really good."

Little Hu felt as sweet as if he'd eaten honey, and happily ran over to feed the chickens. Sanhu stayed there for a while, before finally blurting out, "I can catch cicadas too, and I can catch sparrows. I'll give them all to you to eat."

Gu Nian burst out laughing softly and sweetly, "Sanhu is also good!"

This child is really adorable.

Sanhu blushed at his sister's laughter and went to find Little Hu, scratching his head as he went.

Behind them, Gu Nian gradually stopped smiling, and her pale, tender face showed a trace of worry.

Secretly, unable to resist, she moved over and leaned on the door.

"What are we going to do now? Just keep her at home like this? Her brother is known to have killed more than ten people. What if they find out?" Mrs. Jiang thought of so many people poisoned to death and felt her scalp tingle.

Of course, the people from Fenglai Village aren't good people either.

But that doesn't mean she can accept keeping such a child at home!

At the door, Gu Nian no longer hid and directly pushed it open.

The couple didn't expect Gu Nian to be right at the door. Thinking about the words they had said, their faces showed embarrassment.

"Uncle, aunt, don't be troubled. You rescued me out of the goodness of your hearts. Though I'm young, I'm not someone who repays kindness with wrongdoing. Right now, I'm unable to repay your kindness, but Gu Nian absolutely won't burden you."

Gu Nian turned around, but her heart wasn't as calm as it seemed on the surface. She didn't know how harsh the outside world was, but this wasn't a society governed by law.

In Fenglai Village, people privately judge someone and drown them in the pond without anyone caring. If she leaves here, she might never meet good people like the Lin Family again.

With just this tiny six-year-old body, unable to carry anything and incapable of fighting, even having a place to go won't guarantee her survival!

Though Mrs. Jiang had initially blamed Lin Sanshui for bringing Gu Nian home, she felt a bit regretful now and, with a worried expression, said, "This child is so young and all alone. Where could she go if she leaves our home?"

Lin Sanshui paced irritably, realizing that if this little one had anywhere else to go, he wouldn't have brought her home without permission.

Sanhu was already eight years old. Though only two years older than Little Hu, he was starting to understand things. From seeing Gu Nian go out alone, he began paying attention to his parents' situation.

Upon hearing their conversation, his little face looked gloomy, and he ran over to whisper a few words into Little Hu's ear.

Little Hu's eyes widened in surprise, and he ran up to the door with a pout, "Mom, Dad, where's my sister?"

Lin Sanshui and Mrs. Jiang hesitated. Before they could speak, Little Hu burst into tears, "You drove my sister away... wah... I want my sister..."

Lin Sanshui's brows almost knitted into a line as he looked questioningly at Mrs. Jiang, who was also clearly torn. He asked, "Look, Little Hu doesn't want to see Gu Nian go. Why don't we adopt her as our daughter? Anyway, we're far from Fenglai Village, so no one will know who she originally was!"

The reason seemed more like he was trying to convince himself.
