__________
"Charmeleon, no!" Trevor's panicked shout echoed across the battlefield, staring in wide eyed horror at the state of his Charmeleon.
Water Pulse wasn't your typical attack that just burst apart or exploded or anything like that. When the sphere struck a target, it did indeed explode and washed over the target in a glowing rippling wave of energy infused water.
But there was a reason it was called Water Pulse.
As soon as the first waved crashed over the immobile Charmeleon, a pulsing sphere of blue light remained where it had struck, that erupted into a second wave that crashed into and over Charmeleon. Then a third. A fourth.
And a fifth.
Despite what the games would measured the attack as, Water Pulse was one of the most potent and powerful water type attacks.
And the Charmeleon could do nothing but take them point blank.
"Flabebe, quick! Fairy Wind!" Trevor shouted.
"Togepi." I said simply, who glanced at me out of the corner of his eyes and his evil grin widened.
"Fla!" Trevor's fairy type spun into action, rotating, before releasing a gale of churning pink wind towards my pokemon.
Togepi was busy holding Charmeleon after all, and Kubfu hadn't moved an inch. And as a fire type, Charmeleon resisted fairy type attacks.
Not a bad idea, but it took far too long for him to get over his panic.
At my voice, Togepi dropped his tiny hand, the blue outline of psychic power around Charmeleon fading, something like relief appearing in the Charmeleon's half closed, battered, soaked form as it began to drop towards the ground-
Before Togepi hopped up with a light airy cackle, one of his tiny stub like feet glowing a bright blue as he drove a Mega Kick straight into the Charmeleon's face and launching it flying backwards, straight into the Fairy Wind attack, stopping it in its tracks as the attack swept over the fire type.
'That Togepi is really quite disturbing you realise?' Mewtwo commented, 'Such love of violence in such a small little thing just does not seem right.'
'I know, it's great right?' I laughed inwardly.
'You know, it's times like this I understand why you did not want to meet me and thought only the likes of Ash Ketchum could help me.' Mewtwo snorted drily.
I shrugged, watching as despite the beating it had just taken, Trevor's Charmeleon began to slowly and shakily push itself to its feet, glaring bloody murder at Togepi while Trevor fretted.
As expected of a Charmeleon I suppose.
Not all starter pokemon species were created equal. That was true in the game to a degree, because there was only so much balance that could be done between them all. But beyond that, in the actual story world other timelines, and this one.
The Charizard line were by far, the most powerful starter line species of pokemon. They were not the physically strongest, most durable, or fastest on average of them all. But, they had the most raw power on average. And their physical abilities ranked at near the top in every category across the board. Combine that with them being the species of starter that generally had instincts and personality best suited to battle amongst them all.
And they were the most powerful starter line, especially because of their dragon characteristics.
But that was not all a good thing.
"Charmeleon, wait, please listen to me!" Trevor pleaded as Charmeleon roared, and despite the damage it had taken rushed straight back towards Togepi, arms behind it and claws gleaming with a metallic shine.
Case in point.
They were by far, the most unruly species of starter pokemon. They were not a pokemon a timid wimp should ever have.
"Kubfu, counter." I ordered.
"Ku-fu!" Kubfu nodded quickly and rushed out to meet Charmeleon, the fire types eyes widening at the sheer speed Kubfu took off with.
In a moment Kubfu was right in front of Charmeleon, grinning wide as Charmeleon panicked and swung out with both claws powered by Metal Claw, raking them across Kubfu-
Who didn't even attempt to dodge, instead grinning as a red glow surrounded his body, before lashing out with powerful jab straight into Charmeleon's stomach.
Its own power returned back at it, twice as powerful.
The Charmeleon gagged, spittle and glittering embers spilling from its throat as it dropped to its knees, clutching at its stomach.
"Charmeleon, no!" Trevor cried, "Quick, Flabebe, pull Charmeleon away with Vine Whip!"
Hmm, let's not.
"Brick Break on its head, then jump on it and Iron Head that Flabebe." I called out to Kubfu in response.
Kubfu jumped into action immediately. Literally, lifted his little arm up as it exploded with power, before bringing it straight down atop Charmeleon's head.
Charmeleon slammed into the ground a second later, crater forming under its body, eyes going completely white. And Kubfu stepped atop its head, before launching into the air-
Just in time for a long pair of green vines to lash through the spot where Charmeleon was previously.
"KU-FU!" Kubfu gave a shout, a massive aura of silver light exploding outwards from his body, before shooting down like a missile and slamming down into the Flabebe before it could react.
The battlefield shook mightily from the collision as another crater formed. Kubfu grinning down at the unconscious Flabebe beneath him.
"Charmeleon and Flabebe are unable to battle," the referee called, "The winner is-"
Just before he could finish though, a howl of rage drew all eyes to the middle of the battlefield as Charmeleon clawed its way to its feet out of the crater it was buried in.
Eyes completely whited out, but a burning orange aura billowing around its body and its tail flame multiple times the size it was before.
'Blaze huh?' I hummed. Not to mention, it was so enraged its eyes were literally whited out.
It was all instinct right now.

'But muh Swampert!'
Shut the fuck up, yes I know I've said this before any of you get to it. I'm predicting it right here before clowns start crying about it. Swampert is great in the games, one of the best starters for sure. But, in the anime world, things are different. And in the anime world, Swampert are middling starter lines and the Charizard line are the strongest on average.
In fact, every time a Swampert has appeared in the anime, it has gotten its ass kicked. Hell, Swampert isn't even depicted in the anime as the strongest hoenn starter species, Sceptile is. Which tracks, because Sceptile is another starter with dragon characteristics.
In the anime and manga, dragon types and dragon adjacent pokemon are treated as much stronger than other pokemon in general, because dragon has always been depicted as the the type with the highest average across the board and the most raw power barring legendaries.
Swampert has the highest base stats of any starter in the games, is a fact yes. But it's also a fact, that it's a middling starter line in the anime.
Honestly. First appearance wise in the anime a trainers Swampert was lost in the shipreck in Hoenn. It barely held long against Ash's recently caught new pokemon like Tailow. Morrison's Swampert in the league, got one shot. Tucker's Swampert got mollywhopped by Corpish. And the last main line Swampert we seen, was a bully in the sewers of Canalave City in Sinnoh, and got its ass beat by a Luxio of all things.
