Chapter 13 - THE FRESH SCOOP

Kyrah had barely stepped through the door before she kicked off her shoes and dropped her bag onto the couch. The event was finally over, and somehow she had survived it without embarrassing herself. At least, she hoped she hadn't.

She walked into the kitchen, poured herself a glass of water, and leaned against the counter. Her mind immediately went back to everything that had happened. Seo Jun. Liu Youning. The company. Hong Kong. The interview. She had gone there thinking she was simply doing a favor for someone who had been kind to her, yet somehow she had walked away with the possibility of an entirely different future.

Kyrah rubbed her forehead. "You're thinking too much again." She looked down at her stomach and instinctively placed a hand over it. "I'm trying," she whispered.

She had no idea what the future looked like anymore. A few months ago, she had thought she knew exactly where her life was headed. She would work hard, eventually get her promotion, save some money, and perhaps build a comfortable life for herself. Now she was pregnant, single, practically broke, and seriously considering moving to another country for a job she hadn't even applied for.

Her fingers moved gently over her stomach. "Looks like it's just you and me, little one." She smiled faintly. "Well, we're going to figure it out."

Her phone suddenly rang.

Kyrah glanced at the screen. Linda.

Of course. Who else?

She answered. "Hello?"

"Finally!" Linda's voice exploded through the phone. "I've been calling you for almost ten minutes!"

Kyrah looked at the screen to check the call duration. "It hasn't even been one minute."

"Don't ruin my excitement with facts."

Kyrah laughed despite herself. "So what's the scoop?"

"You called me immediately after the event?" Kyrah asked.

"Obviously! Did you think I was going to sleep without hearing everything?"

"You helped me get ready for the event, Linda."

"I know."

"You knew exactly where I was going."

"I know."

"You know Seo Jun."

"I know that too."

Kyrah shook her head. "Then what exactly are you asking?"

"Everything that happened after I dropped you off."

Kyrah smiled. "You're unbelievable."

"I'm your best friend. It's my responsibility."

"Since when is gossip a responsibility?"

"Since I was born."

Kyrah laughed again.

"Okay. What do you want to know?"

Linda gasped dramatically. "First of all, was he handsome up close?"

Kyrah rolled her eyes. "Linda."

"What? I need accurate information."

"He looked exactly the same as when you saw him."

"That wasn't my question."

Kyrah laughed. "Yes, he was handsome."

"I knew it!"

"But that's not important."

"Everything is important. Continue."

Kyrah shook her head. "You really do follow every piece of gossip to the end, don't you?"

"I don't follow gossip. I investigate it."

"There's absolutely no difference."

"There is. Gossip is irresponsible. Investigation is professional."

Kyrah burst out laughing. For a moment, it felt like the old days again.

Linda had always been like this. She could turn the most ordinary situation into a full investigation. At work, she somehow knew who had argued with whom, who was getting married, who had resigned, and which manager had been seen having lunch with whom. She could remember details Kyrah had forgotten five minutes after hearing them.

But beneath all the teasing was something Kyrah had slowly come to appreciate. Linda cared. She might tease her, interrogate her, and occasionally say things that made Kyrah want to throw a pillow at her, but she was always there.

"So," Linda continued, "tell me about this important person."

"Liu Youning?"

"Yes. The vice-president."

Kyrah leaned back. "He was very nice."

"Very nice?"

"Yes."

"That's all?"

"He asked me about my university projects and the AI competition I won."

Linda paused. "Wait. How did he know about that?"

"I told you. Seo Jun mentioned me to him."

"Exactly! Why would Seo Jun tell his vice-president about you before you even applied?"

Kyrah frowned. "I don't know."

"Did he tell you why?"

"No."

Linda made a suspicious sound. "Hmm."

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Linda."

"I said nothing."

"You made a noise."

"It's a thinking noise."

Kyrah sighed. "You're impossible."

"And you're too trusting."

That made Kyrah sit upright. "I'm not trusting him."

"I didn't say you were."

"I barely know Seo Jun."

"Exactly."

Kyrah thought about it. There was something strange about the entire situation. Seo Jun had met her twice. Yet somehow he knew about her skills, her university achievement, and had introduced her to someone as important as Liu Youning.

She couldn't understand why.

Still, she didn't want to assume the worst. Maybe Seo Jun was simply a genuinely kind person. Maybe he really did believe she was talented.

"Whatever his reason is, I'm grateful," Kyrah said. "For the first time in months, I feel like something might actually work out."

Linda's voice softened. "That's what I wanted to hear."

Kyrah smiled.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"I think you should apply for that job."

Kyrah's smile faded slightly. "I know."

"You were good at what you did in university. You shouldn't let what happened with Jinyoung convince you that you're incapable."

Kyrah looked down. "Jinyoung has nothing to do with this."

"Good. Keep it that way."

Kyrah smiled. "I want to work. That's all I want right now."

"I know."

"I need money. I need stability. I have a baby coming."

Her hand rested over her stomach again.

"I don't want my child growing up watching me struggle every day."

Linda didn't answer immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice had lost its usual playful tone.

"Then don't let that happen."

Kyrah smiled. "I won't."

"Good. And if Hong Kong gives you an opportunity, take it."

"You make it sound so easy."

"It isn't easy. But neither is staying where you are."

Kyrah stared ahead.

Maybe Linda was right.

Maybe a fresh start didn't have to mean running away.

Maybe it could mean finally choosing herself.

Her phone suddenly vibrated again.

A message.

Kyrah picked it up.

It was from an unknown number.

Mr. Liu Youning: Hello, Miss Kyrah. It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday. I hope you will consider sending your CV. We would be interested in speaking with you further.

Kyrah read it twice.

Then a third time.

Her heart began beating faster.

"Linda."

"What?"

"I just got a message from Liu Youning."

Linda immediately became excited. "What did he say?"

Kyrah read the message aloud.

There was a brief pause.

Then Linda screamed so loudly that Kyrah pulled the phone away from her ear.

"I TOLD YOU!"

"Linda!"

"You're getting an interview!"

"I haven't even sent my CV."

"Then send it!"

Kyrah laughed. "I need to update it first."

"Do it tonight."

"Tonight?"

"Yes, tonight."

"I need to sleep."

"Sleep after you become successful."

Kyrah laughed. "You're ridiculous."

"I know."

Linda suddenly became serious again.

"And Kyrah?"

"Hmm?"

"Don't go there thinking you're lucky to have been noticed."

Kyrah stopped smiling.

"Go there knowing you're talented."

Kyrah looked at the message again.

Something shifted inside her.

For months, she had been defined by everything she had lost. Jinyoung. Her promotion. Her confidence. Her plans.

But perhaps she didn't have to keep looking backward.

Perhaps there was something ahead of her after all.

"I'll send the CV," she said.

"That's my girl."

"And Linda?"

"Hmm?"

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For everything."

Linda scoffed. "Don't get emotional on me."

Kyrah laughed. "I mean it."

"I know."

There was another pause.

Then Linda's mischievous voice returned.

"Now that we've handled your career, there's still one important matter."

Kyrah already knew where this was going.

"No."

"You don't even know what I'm going to say."

"Yes, I do."

"Seo Jun."

"Linda!"

"What? I'm only saying he seems interested."

"He hasn't said anything like that."

"He took you to an important event."

"As a friend."

"He introduced you to his company's vice-president."

"Because he thinks I'm talented."

"He remembered your name."

"Linda, that's normal human behavior."

"He gave you his jacket."

"It was cold."

"He invited you to breakfast."

"We were both hungry."

"And now his vice-president wants your CV."

"Because I'm qualified!"

Linda burst into laughter. "Fine, fine. I'm done."

"Good."

"For now."

Kyrah smiled and shook her head. "There's nothing between me and Seo Jun."

"I know."

"I mean it."

"I know."

"I'm not looking for another relationship."

"I know."

"I have enough to deal with."

"I know."

"I need a job."

"I know!"

"Then why do you keep bringing him up?"

"Because I'm allowed to dream for you until you're ready to dream for yourself."

Kyrah went silent.

That answer caught her off guard.

Linda had a way of hiding sincere things underneath jokes.

"You really are strange," Kyrah said softly.

"And you're stuck with me."

Kyrah smiled. "Unfortunately."

"Fortunately."

They both laughed.

After the call ended, Kyrah placed her phone beside her. She looked around the small apartment. Nothing had changed. The same old furniture. The same worn curtains. The same uncertain future.

But for the first time in a long while, she didn't feel trapped by it.

She picked up her laptop.

There was work to do.

A CV to rewrite.

An interview to prepare for.

A future to build.

And somewhere in Hong Kong, there was a man named Park Seo Jun who had gone out of his way to open a door for her without telling her exactly why.

Kyrah didn't know what Seo Jun wanted. She didn't know why Liu Youning already knew so much about her. And she certainly didn't know what was waiting for her if she actually made it to Hong Kong.

But one thing was certain.

She was going to find out.
