Chapter 16 - The Sick Kingdom

Supergirl:

"We have another one!"

Breaking down the door to Atlantis's dock, I run back to help Dinah carry a sick man with green skin and fins. We move fast and gently place the sick Atlantinean on a cot. Watching as he coughs and moans, I see how he is about to scratch a rash.

"Don't!"

I grab his hand and stop him. Kneeling, I look the Atlantinean in his eyes.

"I know it's itchy, but please, don't scratch it. It'll only make it worse."

The Atlantinean, now shivering, grabs his blanket and covers himself. As I stand back up, I can't help but look around.

The Atlantis's dock has been turned into an infirmary, with cots and medical supplies at the ready. However, as more Atlantineans are carried in, the cots are quickly filled up, and supplies are running low.

"Okay," Harleen says. "That's about the last of it."

Screaming as she climbs out of the Junker with a box of supplies, Harleen drops the box in front of Pam, Professor Stein, and Eobard.

"Can you geniuses do anything with all this stuff?"

"We'll try," Professor Stein answers. He reaches into the box and pulls out another syringe and a clear bottle. "But, please remember. Eobard and I are physicists."

"And I'm a botanist," Pam adds. "I worked with plants, not 'fish people'."

"You three are the only scientists here," I say. "You can do it."

"Yeah," Harleen yells, raising her hand. "Fingers crossed."

"Incoming!" Someone yells, and we all turn our heads. Running into the room with another Atlantean, this one coughing and throwing up, Barry and Oliver quickly place the Atlantean down on an empty cot, but as they lower him, he turns and throws up.

Behind them are Jaime and Cheetah, and Selina and Jason Todd. Watching as the infirmary is quickly filling up, I turn around and look at the Junker.

"Please," I think . "Hurry."

The Man:

"Doc! Doc, come on! This is getting ridiculous."

"No," the Doc shouts. "No! I am not leaving! I am not!"

I shake my head while looking at the trembling baby. Shaking, sweating, and gripping onto the counter, the Doc keeps screaming.

"I'm sorry! Okay? But I just can't! I can't leave the infirmary! You know this! Why else would you have to drug me! Not one, but twice!"

"Doc, shut up!"

I make my voice echo like thunder, shaking the whole submarine. The Doc stops crying and looks at me.

"Doc, I'm trying not to be mean, I really am, but you need to get over your fear now! I need your help. You and I are the only doctors here, and there is a long line of patients out there, most of whom are already half-dead."

"I can't go outs--"

"You can't go outside."

I sigh. Lowering my head, I reach into my pocket and pull out the test tube filled with Aquaman's blood.

"Correction. You are the only doctor here. I have to run tests on this, find out what these black blobs are."

The Doc sees the test tube.

"Oh, that is not normal. Is it?"

"No. Of course not. This may be Aquaman's blood, and he must be half-fish, but even a fish's blood is red. No, this is something else. Something I need to study immediately, meaning you need to get out there and help the others."

Pocketing the tube, I lunge for the Doc and start pulling him again.

"Come on, Doc! Let go!"

"No!"

"Doc!"

"No!"

"Doc!"

"No!"

"Leave him alone!"

Hearing a voice, a familiar voice, I stop. The Doc also stops. He freezes. An ocean of sweat beads runs down his face, drenching him. The sound of him swallowing echoes in my ears. He looks at me with wide eyes.

"Doc," I say, my hands falling to my sides. "Why is Iris in the Junker's infirmary?"

"I have no idea what you are talking about," the Doc answers. I cross my arms and look at the Doctor. Like thin ice, he breaks and begins wailing.

"Okay, fine! Ms. Iris West is here! She's here! Okay? She snuck aboard as the submarine was taken off! In my defense, I did want to tell you, but Ms. Iris West begged me not to! Now, before you--"

Before the Doc can finish, I shoot out my hand and punch him in the face. The wall lets out a quick but loud thud as the Doctor hits it. The wall then makes a squeaking sound as the Doctor slides down it, holding his nose.

"Ouch!"

"Hey, don't do that!"

Jumping in between the Doc and me, she stares me down with red eyes.

"Relax. I punched the Doctor harder than that before. Hey, Doc, tells Iris about the time you set me on fire."

"What?"

"Long story," the Doctor answers, his voice echoing as he still covers his nose and mouth. "But, The Man is right. He can punch harder than this."

"Okay. Whatever. The point is, I am here. Right here, in your submarine, in Atlantis."

"Yes. I can see that."

Breathing heavily, almost on the verge of hyperventilating, Iris starts drawing circles with her fingers. Her head bobs up and down, and she licks her head.

"I can help," she says after taking a deep breath. "Okay? I know I can help. I know that I don't have any medical experience, like you or Dr. Crane, but you said it yourself. You need help. There is a long line of patients, a lot of them near-death. Dr. Crane can't leave the infirmary, and you need to run tests. So leave it to me."

I open my mouth, but Iris cuts me off.

"Dr. Crane had been teaching me everything he knows, and everything he knows came from your medical books and journals."

"Iris--"

"I can do this! I'm not just going to sit around anymore! I may be a doctor-in-training, but I am still more of a doctor than Barry or Supergirl or Captain Cold."

"Iris! You--"

Before I can finish, the Junker shakes. Cabients' doors are thrown open. The lights flicker on and off. The Doc and Iris are thrown off their feet, but I catch the two of them.

"Get down!"

"What was that?" Iris asks, her and the Doctor crouching down.

"Hold on," I say, holding out my hand while still standing up. Closing my eyes, I begin to focus. With my mind expanding and my thoughts becoming one with the mighty ocean, I hear the thoughts of nearby sea creatures.

"Oh no. Not now. Not now! You two, stay here! Iris, I mean it this time! Don't leave the infirmary!"

With that said, I stomp toward the exit before slamming the door shut. I then run through the Junker, climbing up and out through the ladder.

"Hey, Sunglasses," Harleen shouts. "We've got trouble incoming!"

Harleen pulls out her dual revolvers. The Profession and Jason fuse to become Firestorm. Jaime activates his scarab, his face getting covered in black and blue armor. As the team prepares, I hear a massive explosion. The whole room shakes, and the sound of metal bending screams throughout. Turning around, I see about a dozen yellow submarines heading toward us. Torpedoes fire from the sides of the submarines, hitting Atlantis. The ocean turns red and orange as the torpedoes explode, causing mountains to collapse and crush buildings. Besides the torpedoes, the submarines' bottoms open up, and soldiers in wet suits, armed with weapons, swim toward us.

Kara flies up and lands on the top of the Junker with me.

"No," she cries. "No. No! No! Not now! Not now!"

"Superman is beginning his attack on Atlantis," I start, "And with Aquaman and his guards all sick--"

"The kingdom is left defenseless," Kara finishes.
