Two hours into the battle, the Aegis Array shattered.
The dome of pale light fractured into countless shards before exploding outward, leaving Varrow's defenses exposed. The Scourge surged through the opening, pouring toward the fortress like a flood unleashed from a broken dam. The first wave crashed into the defensive lines before the cannons could redirect their fire.
"Close the gaps! Close the gaps!" Thrax roared, his commands cutting through the chaos.
But the breach was already too wide.
Thousands of Scourge descended upon the citadel in a rain of flesh and claws. Parasite Spawns scrambled over the shattered remains of the barrier, while infected elves charged behind them, their weapons raised and their twisted bodies heedless of the defenders' attacks. Plasma fire ripped through the leading ranks, and spirit cannons blasted entire clusters apart, yet the sheer volume of enemies overwhelmed every attempt to stem their advance.
Dozens of defenders fell within seconds.
