Varrow's citadel stood atop a massive asteroid at the mouth of the Narrows, a passage cutting through a vast region of hazardous space. Gravitational shear, turbulent spatial currents, and pockets of chaotic energy made navigation through the surrounding void extremely dangerous.
Although the Scourge could bypass the passage, doing so would force its armada to take a much longer route, delaying its advance toward the Alliance's inner territories.
That made Varrow a critical stronghold. Whoever controlled the asteroid could slow the Scourge's advance and buy the Alliance precious time to evacuate its forces.
From the command tower, Thrax watched the approaching horde emerge from the stars.
