On his way back from the puddle, Hayden decided to collect some large pieces of wood for his shelter. His plan was to build a pyramid-shaped structure using the sticks, then tie them together at the top with vines. Hopefully, adding leaves to the outside would help keep out some of the rain and provide a little camouflage.

At least, that was the plan.

{Why does it seem like my stamina keeps going down? I haven't used any skills. Could it be that every action I perform uses stamina? If so, what happens when I run out?}

Hayden had more important things to worry about for now, so he put those questions aside and returned to the clearing where he'd made his fire pit.

He gathered the sticks into a bundle and began tying them together at the top with a vine, pulling it as tightly as he could.

Unfortunately, the vine snapped on his first attempt.

{It seems like one vine isn't strong enough. What if I use several together? That should make them stronger.}

Hayden collected more vines and twisted them together before trying again. This time, he managed to secure the top of the bundle without breaking anything.

He carefully stood the bundle upright and began spreading the sticks out at the bottom, forming a rough pyramid shape.

{Thankfully, I can lean this against a tree for support. I can only hope the shelter doesn't collapse too quickly. Then again, with my current skills, I shouldn't expect it to last very long anyway.}

Once the structure was standing, Hayden stepped back to admire his work.

Calling it a shelter was being generous.

It looked like a pile of sticks that had somehow agreed to stand up for a few minutes.

Still, it was better than nothing.

Hayden gathered some heavy stones and arranged them in a ring around the inside and outside of the structure, hoping they would help keep the sticks in place. Then he collected some large leaves from nearby trees and began tying them to the frame using their stems and the vines scattered across the ground.

It took him a few hours of work, but eventually, he had something that vaguely resembled a shelter.

It was ugly, uneven, and probably wouldn't survive a strong gust of wind, but at least it offered some protection from the elements.

Hayden stood back and looked at his creation.

"Well, it's a crappy shelter, but it's MY crappy shelter."

Satisfied enough with his work, he decided it was time to deal with another problem.

Food.

He still had the ku'it berries he'd discovered earlier. He'd been reluctant to eat them because their appraisal result had listed an unknown effect, but he couldn't keep surviving on hope alone.

Besides, the berry had been marked as edible.

That had to count for something, right?

Hayden picked one of the berries and examined it for a moment before putting it into his mouth.

It tasted surprisingly sweet and juicy, although there was also a slightly foul aftertaste that made him question his decision.

Then a system message appeared.

System

Effect: Causes magical diarrhoea for 10 minutes.

Hayden stared at the message.

"AHHHH! WHY COULDN'T THE SYSTEM TELL ME THIS BEFORE?!"

He immediately ran as fast as he could towards the nearest bush.

For the next ten minutes, Hayden experienced a level of suffering that made him question every decision he'd ever made in his life.

He had survived being stabbed, waking up in an unfamiliar world, and nearly losing his leg to murderous grass.

Yet somehow, a bloody berry had become one of his greatest enemies.

Hayden was just glad nobody had been around to witness what happened next.

Although, considering the sheer amount of suffering involved, he was fairly sure he'd created a new life form of his own.

If anyone had seen it, they would probably have agreed.

Once the effects finally wore off, Hayden slowly emerged from behind the bush, looking like a man who had just lost a fight against nature.

He decided that ku'it berries would be a last resort from now on.

A very, VERY last resort.

{Okay, now I know the ku'it berry has a nasty effect, there might be some uses for it in the future. I can't think of many things that would need this sort of effect, though.}

He paused for a moment, then shrugged.

{Whatever. I'll have a quick look around my campsite before going to sleep tonight. I can level up my Appraisal skill a bit more and see if there's anything useful nearby. Hopefully, I'll find something that doesn't try to kill me or make me regret being alive.}
