Gao Yang finally fulfilled Yelena's wish to see a musical on Broadway.
Broadway is the name of a street, but there are so many famous theaters on it that Broadway has become synonymous with opera.
Gao Yang had no interest in opera or musicals, but since Yelena liked them, he had no choice but to accompany her regardless of his own preferences.
There were different shows playing at each Broadway theater. Gao Yang didn't like any of them, so it didn't matter what they watched. Eventually, Yelena made her pick, and she chose Les Misérables.
Gao Yang didn't like musicals, especially tragedies, but at least the singing was quite pleasing to the ear, allowing him to listen from beginning to end. The only thing that upset him was when Yelena began to sob uncontrollably, while he felt nothing.
It wasn't that Gao Yang was heartless; it was just that he had seen too many real-life tragedies to be moved by the plot of a play.
