Chaos, utter chaos, reigned supreme within the grand halls leading towards the first auditorium as countless first years, garbed in their combat attire, rushed about in every which direction, their voices overlapping into one great deafening roar that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings above.
Leather chest guards, reinforced at the ribs and shoulder, were strapped hastily over cotton undershirts, buckles clinking loudly as students fumbled with straps they had barely practiced tying, some having their fellow classmates assist them, others struggling alone in a corner, cursing under their breath. Boots of thick hide, laced up to the shin, thudded heavily against the marbled floor as the great mass of students pushed and shoved their way towards the looming double doors ahead, and here and there gauntlets of dark leather, some plain, some etched with the sigils of noble houses, glinted dully beneath the flickering torchlight that lined the corridor.
Amidst that great chaotic mass, familiar faces could be spotted, weaving in and out of the crowd like fish swimming upstream.
Sashah, her crimson hair tied back tightly, wore a fitted combat vest of dark leather that hugged close to her figure, twin sheaths strapped across her back though empty, her technique needing no such vessel. Her expression, as always, carried that familiar scowl, her sharp eyes scanning the crowd with clear irritation at being jostled about by the lesser, unremarkable students around her.
Not far off, Alderen strode with an air of unbothered arrogance, his combat attire a deep imperial blue, tailored so precisely it looked as though it had been stitched onto his very frame, a long ornamental sash draped across his chest denoting his eastern heritage, his amethyst eyes half lidded with obvious disdain for the pushing, shoving masses that dared brush past him.
Typhoen, ever the showman, wore his combat gear loosely, sleeves rolled up despite the cold, his sapphire eyes gleaming with excitement as he greeted nearly every student he passed with a wide, toothy grin, his confidence utterly unshaken by the sheer madness surrounding them all.
Amongst this great churning sea of anxious first years, Harris and Gerald found themselves pressed shoulder to shoulder against a stone pillar near the auditorium entrance, both having donned matching leather vests, though Gerald's, given his plump frame, strained noticeably at the buckles.
"Gerald, do you think we're actually ready for this?"
Harris muttered nervously, adjusting the straps of his gauntlets for what felt like the hundredth time, his eyes darting anxiously towards the massive double doors that loomed ahead.
"Ready or not, we don't really have much of a choice now do we?"
Gerald answered back, his tone carrying that usual dry humor despite the obvious anxiety etched plainly across his round, sweating face.
"but hey, at least we'll finally get to see what all this fuss about expressions is about, right?"
"HARRIS! GERALD!"
A cheerful, high pitched voice called out from within the crowd, cutting cleanly through the chaotic noise as a petite girl squeezed her way towards the two of them, her gentle, round face breaking into a wide, warm smile the moment she reached them.
Dressed in a modest combat outfit, far too large for her small, delicate frame, the sleeves bunched awkwardly at her wrists, she looked almost comically out of place amidst the sea of battle ready students, yet her gentle expression carried within it an unshakable warmth that seemed entirely her own.
"Hope! There you are, we were wondering where you'd run off to."
Gerald greeted warmly, shifting slightly to make room for the small girl to squeeze in beside them against the pillar.
"Sorry, sorry! I got caught up talking to some of the girls from the east wing, but can you believe it, we're finally here! After everything we went through just to get accepted into this place!"
Hope's cheerful voice carried genuine excitement as she began recounting, in vivid animated detail, the grueling entrance exams they'd endured months prior, the sleepless nights spent studying ancient techniques, the brutal physical trials that had left many hopeful students bruised and broken before they'd even set foot properly within the academy's halls.
"Remember how my older sister had to practically drag me out of bed every single morning just so I wouldn't miss training? Oh, and remember Harris, how your brother-"
Hope's cheerful chatter came to an abrupt halt as she noticed Harris' expression suddenly shift, his gaze drifting downward towards the cold marbled floor, his usual carefree demeanor replaced by something far more somber, far more distant.
Gerald too, upon hearing mention of Harris' brother, found his own gaze drifting downward, a similar dazed, faraway look settling upon his round features, memories of his own family, of sacrifices made and hardships endured, weighing heavily upon his young heart.
"...oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring up..."
Hope's cheerful voice faltered, guilt flashing plainly across her gentle, round face as she realized, too late, the weight her innocent words had carried.
Seeing the sudden shift in mood, Hope quickly composed herself, her cheerful smile returning, albeit slightly forced this time, as she quickly sought to steer the conversation towards safer, less painful waters.
"Anyway! Forget all that, have you guys heard? Apparently there's no royal rumble this time around, they're testing us all individually instead!"
The sudden shift in topic seemed to work exactly as intended, both Harris and Gerald's expressions brightening slightly, their earlier somber moods pushed aside, at least for now, replaced instead by nervous anticipation.
"Individually? That's... actually kind of terrifying, isn't it? At least in a royal rumble you could hide amongst the crowd."
Harris muttered, his nervousness plain in his voice, though a small, mischievous grin slowly began tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Terrifying? Nah, this is perfect actually!"
Gerald interjected suddenly, his chest puffing out with sudden, exaggerated confidence.
"Think about it, one on one, no crowd to hide behind, no distractions, just me and my opponent. I'll wait till they charge in all cocky like, then BAM, Guillotine technique straight to the throat, game over."
Gerald made an exaggerated slicing motion with his hand, grinning proudly at his own imagined heroics, causing Hope to giggle softly at his sudden bravado.
"Oh please, that's nothing. Watch, I'll just calmly stand there, let them think they've got the advantage, then right when they're about to strike, I'll dodge at the very last second, its literally that easy, then counter with my own technique before they even know what hit them."
Harris boasted confidently, his own imagined scenario growing increasingly elaborate with each passing second, his hands gesturing wildly to emphasize his supposed unstoppable prowess.
"Oh yeah? Well what if your opponent has some kind of overpowered ranged technique, huh? Ever think of that, Mr Dodge-at-the-last-second?"
"Please, if they've got a ranged technique, I'll just, uh... I'll dodge that too! Obviously!"
Their playful bickering continued, each one dramatizing their imagined victories further and further, their voices growing louder, more animated, more absurdly confident with each exchange, until finally, Hope could no longer contain her laughter, her gentle giggles breaking through the surrounding chaos like a small, warm ray of sunlight.
"You two are ridiculous, you know that? But hey, at least it's nice seeing you both smiling again."
Her cheerful, gentle voice carried a quiet warmth that neither Harris nor Gerald quite noticed themselves needing until they heard it, both boys exchanging brief, sheepish grins before returning to their playful, exaggerated bravado, the great looming doors of the auditorium finally creaking open before them, ushering the chaotic mass of nervous, excited first years forward into the uncertain trials that awaited.
