Chapter 20 - Matteo’s Truth

Matteo returned three days later. He found her in the sitting room, curled in the armchair by the window, reading the book of Italian poetry Enzo had annotated. His notes in the margins were sharp and tender by turns. She had read them so many times she could recite them from memory.

Matteo appeared in the doorway, his hands empty. No pastries. No gifts. He did not smile.

"I have decided," Matteo said.

She set down the book and met his eyes. "And?" she asked.

"You are not a piece. You were never a piece. But I was using you." His voice was rough, scraped raw. "The vendor fraud, the overcharging—it was not just leverage. It was a test. I wanted to see if you would discover it. I wanted to see if you would tell Enzo. I wanted to know if you were loyal to him or if you could be turned," he said.

Her blood went cold, a chill spreading from her chest to her fingertips. "And?" she asked again.

"You discovered it. You told him. You are loyal." He met her eyes, and there was something like grief in his gaze. "I was going to use you to weaken Enzo. The shipment I asked you about—it was never about escape. It was about revenge. I wanted to hurt him. And I thought I could use you to do it," Matteo said.

She stared at him, her mind racing. The warmth, the pastries, the stories that made her laugh—all of it had been a test. A manipulation. And yet some of it had been real. She could see it in his eyes. "But you changed your mind," she said.

"Yes." His voice was barely a whisper. "Because you made me laugh. Because you listened to my story about the train station. Because you looked at me like I was a person, not a threat or a relic. And I realized I could not use you. I could not make you a piece in my revenge," he said.

"Then what do you want now?" she asked.

"To tell you the truth. And to give you a real choice." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded paper. "This is the location of the shipment. The real one. If you give this to Enzo, he will intercept it. He will destroy the people I hired. My plan will fail. But I will be free of it. I will walk away from this life. For good," Matteo said.

He paused, as if weighing whether to say more. "There is one other thing. A contact I placed months ago. Still inside the villa. I will not activate them. They are yours to find, or not," he said. He did not give a name.

She took the paper. Her hand trembled, the paper quivering in her grip. "Why are you giving this to me?" she asked.

"Because you deserve to choose. Not to be used. Not to be a piece. Choose what you do with this information. Give it to Enzo. Or do not. But whatever you choose, know that I am sorry. For trying to use you. For not seeing you as a person sooner," Matteo said.

He turned and walked out. She watched him go, the paper clutched in her hand. The watch on his wrist glinted in the afternoon light. He adjusted it once before he disappeared through the doorway.

She sat in the silence, the weight of the choice pressing down on her like a physical thing. Matteo had given her power. Real power. The power to destroy his plan or let it succeed. The power to choose. She looked down at the paper. The edges were soft from being folded and refolded. She imagined Matteo carrying it, waiting for the right moment. She thought of Enzo's dark eyes, the way he had pressed her hand to his heart after their first intimacy and said nothing. She thought of Nico, safe for now, but always one wrong move from danger. She thought of the cage she was learning to call home.

That night, she went to Enzo's study. She placed the paper on his desk, her fingers lingering on its edge. "Matteo gave me this. It is the location of the shipment he planned to intercept. He said if I give it to you, you will destroy his plan. He said he is walking away. And he said there is a contact still inside. Dormant. He did not give a name," Alessia said.

Enzo looked at the paper, then at her. His dark eyes were unreadable. "And you are giving it to me," he said.

"Yes," she replied.

"Why?" he asked.

She met his eyes without flinching. "Because I am choosing. Not because I am loyal. Not because I am yours. Because I want to understand this world. And I want to do it without being used by anyone. Not by Matteo. Not by you," she said.

Enzo nodded slowly. "Then you are no longer a prisoner. You are no longer a weapon. You are a partner. If you want to be," he said.

She considered. The cage was inside her now. But it was no longer a cage. It was a foundation. And she was learning to build on it. "I want to be," she said.

He took her hand. His fingers were warm, his grip firm. For the first time, the door was open. And she was choosing to stay.
