MONDAY
8:59 A.M. — CALLOWAY GROUP
EXECUTIVE BOARDROOM
Twenty-three folders.
Twenty-three seats.
And, by the time the board secretary closed the doors at exactly nine, twenty-three voting directors.
No proxies.
No absences.
One vote each.
Lucian and Theo were two of the twenty-three.
Everyone in the room had spent the last several weeks insisting Calloway Group needed to change.
Lucian was about to find out how many still believed that when the changes reached their own chairs.
Theo took his seat three places to Lucian's right.
Margaret Hale sat opposite them, already halfway through the packet.
Elias remained along the side wall with independent compliance counsel and two members of the governance team.
They were staff and advisers, not directors.
They could answer questions.
They could not vote.
Elias was there because somebody in the room would inevitably claim something was impossible, and he had brought documentation proving otherwise.
Lucian opened his folder.
