THURSDAY
8:39 A.M. — U.S. ATTORNEY'S OFFICE
Rebecca Sloan looked at the clock in the lobby.
Then at Aaron.
Then back at the clock.
"Eight thirty-nine."
Aaron adjusted his cuff.
"You were very specific."
"I said don't be early."
"I am not early."
"You've been across the street since eight-twenty."
Aaron stopped.
Rebecca smiled.
"You saw me?"
"No."
"Then how—"
"You bought coffee from the place with the green awning. You're holding the cup."
Aaron looked down at it.
Rebecca walked toward security.
"I don't need an intelligence network. I have eyes."
"That feels unnecessarily smug."
"It is."
Aaron followed her.
The humor lasted until the elevator doors opened.
Daniel Reeves was already waiting upstairs.
So were two people Aaron hadn't met.
One man.
One woman.
Both carried government folders.
Rebecca's posture changed.
So did Aaron's.
Wednesday was over.
