The email arrived at 2:17 PM on Tuesday.
FROM: Caltech Visiting Researcher Documentation Office TO: Adam Carter SUBJECT: Formal Record Access Request — Notification
This is an automated notification. A formal record access request has been filed for your Academy City exchange documentation, including classification records. The request was filed by Dr. S. Cooper through standard Caltech research verification channels.
Standard processing time: 48 hours.

Adam read the email twice.
The Ghost Index would ensure the Academy City records confirmed Level 2. The records would arrive on Thursday evening or Friday morning. They would show exactly what they should show — exactly what Adam had told everyone they would show.
This was good.
It was also the most complete institutional deflection available, and it would be exhausted in forty-eight hours.
After the records arrive and confirm Level 2, Sheldon will have a choice: accept the institutional record or continue investigating against it.
There are no more institutional records to point to after this.
The records are the last structural support for the Level 2 framing.
Adam closed his laptop. Sat in his apartment with the email notification and the forty-eight-hour window and the understanding that the next two days would determine whether his cover held or collapsed.
He wrote in his notebook:
"48 hours. After this, either he accepts the record or he doesn't. No third option."

[ADAM'S APARTMENT — WEDNESDAY]
He did not go to Caltech on Wednesday.
Instead, he did something he had not planned to do: he retrieved all four months of notebooks and spread them across his desk and read them.
Not to check for security vulnerabilities. Not to verify his deflection strategies. Not to update his probability calculations.
Just to read them.
He started with the first entries — the arrival week, the initial observations, the encoding of Sheldon's behavioral patterns and Leonard's social dynamics and Penny's observational style. The early entries were clinical. Methodical. The documentation of a person conducting an operation.
He read the comet calculation entry. The Raj synthesis question that had started everything. The "You helped / You did the work" exchange that had become their ritual.
He read the whiteboard note entry — the framework he had written and not claimed, the calibration anomaly it had created, the beginning of Sheldon's investigation.
He read the realization entry. The one that still mattered.
"I have stopped performing liking these people. The performance became actual."
He read the Penny entries: the warmth question, the "not a complaint" comment, the stairwell moments when she had simply sat with him without requiring explanation.
He read the Leonard entries: the pattern output conversation, the protective information, the choice not to enter during the interrogation.
He read: "Growth faster than comfortable. Manage accordingly."
He read: "Patience is a tool, not a state."
He read: "I was wrong about neutrality."
Four hours passed.
He closed the notebooks.
He sat for a while.
I have been documenting everything. I have not been reading what I documented.
The person who wrote these entries is not the person who arrived four months ago.
I am not sure when that happened.
I am not sure it matters when.

[APARTMENT BUILDING STAIRS — THURSDAY EVENING]
Penny found him on the stairs.
She climbed up from the lobby and stopped at the landing where he was sitting. She did not ask if something was wrong. She sat down beside him, her shoulder almost touching his, and looked at the same wall he was looking at.
"Sheldon requested your records," she said.
It was not a question.
"Yes."
"What happens when they arrive?"
"They will say what they should say."
Penny was quiet for a moment. The Witness Protocol registered her behavioral signature: careful, attentive, not pushing.
"Is that the same as what is true?"
Adam turned to look at her.
She was watching him with the expression she had developed over months — the one that said she saw the gap and had chosen to give him room anyway. She was not asking because she did not know. She was asking because she wanted to know what he would say.
"For institutional purposes," he said, "yes."
She nodded slowly.
"Okay."
She did not ask what "institutional purposes" meant versus what was true. She already knew there was a gap. She had always known. She had chosen to give him room from the first warmth question, from the first "not a complaint" comment, from every stairwell moment when she had sat with him without demanding explanation.
She was still choosing it.

Penny stood up to go inside.
"For what it's worth," she said, "whatever the records say — you are not what you were when you arrived."
Adam looked up at her.
"I know."
"Is that okay?"
The question landed differently than the others. This was not about his cover or his classification or his institutional status. This was about him — the person who had been changing for four months, the person who had stopped performing and started being, the person who had written notebooks full of observations and had only just read them.
"I am still deciding," he said.
Penny smiled slightly. "Fair enough."
She went inside.
Adam sat on the stairs for another ten minutes. The Witness Protocol ran at passive range, feeding him the building's behavioral signatures — Sheldon working in his apartment, Leonard watching television, the quiet rhythm of an evening settling into place.
He was a person who tracked things. He had just been asked a question that did not belong in a tracking system.
He did not have an answer.
He was not sure he needed one yet.
