Chapter 7 - EPISODE 7: A DANGEROUS BOND

The tension between them didn't fade.

It deepened.

What began as strategy had turned into something far more complicated—something neither of them fully controlled

Every glance lingered a moment too long. Every word carried weight beneath its surface. Even silence between them felt… charged.

It was dangerous.

And they both knew it.

The royal gathering was meant to be simple.

Music, wine, controlled conversation.

But Selene felt it the moment she stepped into the hall—the shift in energy. Eyes followed her more openly now, no longer dismissive, but cautious.

Respect… mixed with curiosity.

And something else.

Fear.

A nobleman approached her, his smile thin and insincere. "You've adjusted quickly," he said, circling his words carefully.

Selene met his gaze without hesitation. "I don't waste time struggling where I intend to win."

His smile tightened. "Confidence can be… misplaced."

"And doubt can be fatal," she replied smoothly.

Something in her tone irritated him.

His hand closed around her wrist, firmer than necessary. "You should be careful," he said, lowering his voice. "This isn't your kingdom."

Selene didn't pull away.

Her gaze sharpened instead.

"And yet," she said quietly, "I'm still standing."

Before he could respond—

"Let go."

Kael's voice cut through the moment like steel.

Cold. Commanding. Final.

The nobleman froze, then quickly released her, stepping back with forced composure. "My apologies, Your Highness."

He disappeared into the crowd.

The music resumed, but something had already shifted.

Selene turned to Kael, her expression calm. "I didn't need saving."

"I know," he said.

"Then why intervene?"

His gaze dropped briefly to her wrist—where the man had held her—before returning to her eyes.

"I don't like people touching what's mine."

The words were quiet.

But they carried something heavy.

Something intentional.

Selene stilled for a fraction of a second.

"I'm not yours," she said.

Kael stepped closer, closing the distance just enough to make the air between them feel thinner.

"Not yet."

The words were softer now.

More dangerous.

Selene should have stepped back.

She didn't.

Instead, she held his gaze, steady and unshaken.

"You assume too much," she said.

"And you resist too much," he replied.

A pause lingered between them—longer this time.

More personal.

The noise of the hall faded into the background, leaving only the space between them.

"You see everything as a game," Kael said quietly. "Moves. Strategies. Outcomes."

Selene's lips curved faintly. "Isn't that what this is?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"No," he said. "Not anymore."

That made her pause.

Just for a second.

Enough for him to notice.

"Careful, Selene," he murmured. "There are things in this palace that don't follow rules."

Her voice remained calm—but softer now

"I don't follow rules either."

Kael studied her like he was trying to decide something.

Then, almost without thinking, his hand lifted—stopping just short of her face.

Not touching.

But close enough to change everything.

"You're either going to become the most powerful woman in this empire…" he said quietly,

"…or the most dangerous mistake it ever made."

Selene didn't look away.

"Maybe both," she replied.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Kael stepped back.

Just enough to break the tension.

But not enough to erase it.

As the night wore on, Selene felt it clearly now.

The shift.

Not just in the court.

Not just in her position.

But between them.

This was no longer just alliance.

No longer just survival.

It was something unpredictable.

Something that could either strengthen her…

Or destroy everything she was building.

And deep down—

She wasn't sure which one frightened her more.
