Chapter 4 - START OVER

The city rose like a giant. Steel towers pierced the sky, their glass reflecting the morning sun in brilliant waves across the endless, churning movement below. It was a sensory overload of life, noise, motion, and overwhelming normality.

Naji Kang stood at the edge of it all. For a long moment, he simply stared.

> **Naji:** "...So this is where everyone lives."

>

He paused, looking around the sprawling metropolis.

> **Naji:** "...No ruins."

>

Another pause followed as the reality of his new environment set in.

> **Naji:** "...No silence."

>

The city didn't care about his revelation. Cars rushed by, people hurried along the sidewalks, and digital screens flashed vibrant advertisements. Life simply continued. Naji took a tentative step forward.

> **Naji:** "...Strange."

>

And just like that, the city swallowed him whole.

> **Pedestrian:** "Move!"

>

A pedestrian barked, brushing roughly past his shoulder.

> **Pedestrian:** "You're blocking the sidewalk! I'm going to be late!"

>

People jostled past him from every direction. Nobody stopped. Nobody stared. Nobody cared.

For the first time in years, Naji wasn't being hunted. He wasn't being ordered around, and he wasn't being watched. He was just another face in the crowd. The feeling was almost unsettling.

His eyes dropped down to his clothes, taking in the torn fabric, layers of dust, and old, unidentifiable stains. Naji sighed.

> **Naji:** "...Yeah. That won't work."

>

An hour later, Naji stepped out of a clothing store. He was now wearing a clean black hoodie, dark trousers, and a pair of new sneakers. It was simple, comfortable, and thoroughly normal. He stared down at himself, adjusting the sleeves.

> **Naji:** "...Better."

>

He muttered, pausing.

> **Naji:** "...Still weird."

>

His phone vibrated lightly in his pocket. Naji pulled it out and checked his account balance. The number appeared clearly on the screen: **2,000,000**. He stared at the digits.

> **Naji:** "...Still there. Good."

>

His thumb tapped the screen once.

> **Naji:** "...So I didn't get erased with the debt."

>

A faint, dangerous smile played at the edge of his lips.

> **Naji:** "...They really thought I wouldn't make it out alive. Unlucky for them."

>

He shoved the phone away, but a sudden, loud growl from his stomach cut his thoughts short. Naji froze.

> **Naji:** "...Right. Food first."

>

He looked around the busy street.

> **Naji:** "...Thinking later."

>

The restaurant he chose wasn't large, but it was brimming with life. Children laughed near a corner table, couples talked quietly over drinks, and someone argued passionately with a friend over sports. Plates clinked, hot food steamed, and everyday life happened all around him.

Naji stood at the entrance for a moment, watching and listening.

> **Naji:** "...So this is normal life."

>

He whispered, before walking inside to take a seat.

When the food arrived, Naji stared at the plate as if it were a foreign artifact.

> **Naji:** "...People do this every day?"

>

He took a bite. Silence. He took another bite, followed by a longer silence. Then, Naji murmured,

> **Naji:** "...This is really good. I've been surviving wrong my whole life."

>

By the time he finished eating, he found himself sitting at the table longer than necessary, just listening to the environment. A child dropped a spoon nearby. Someone laughed across the room. A couple argued over something completely meaningless. It was peaceful. Absurdly peaceful.

> **Naji:** "...So this is what people call peace."

>

A voice interrupted his thoughts.

> **Waitress:** "Sir? Your bill."

>

Naji looked up to see a waitress, roughly his own age, holding the slip of paper. She looked slightly nervous and a bit awkward under his gaze. Naji pulled out his phone and smoothly scanned the digital payment code on the bill.

The waitress checked her handheld device and blinked in surprise.

> **Waitress:** "Oh, sir, that's more than the amount."

>

Before he could respond, she headed over to the counter and returned a moment later with cash.

> **Waitress:** "Here's your change."

>

> **Naji:** "...No need."

>

She blinked again, completely caught off guard.

> **Waitress:** "Sorry?"

>

Naji placed the paper money back down on the table, pushing it toward her.

> **Naji:** "...Keep it."

>

Then, after a brief second of hesitation, he added,

> **Naji:** "...Food was good."

>

The girl froze, a sudden, bright blush creeping up her cheeks immediately.

> **Waitress:** "...T-thank you."

>

Naji stood up, pulling his hood slightly to adjust it.

> **Naji:** "It's fine."

>

He turned toward the exit. Behind him, the waitress watched him leave with a dazed expression. A coworker appeared beside her instantly, nudging her elbow.

> **Coworker:** "Don't start."

>

> **Waitress:** "N-no! I wasn't—"

>

> **Coworker:** "You absolutely were."

>

The waitress looked away, flustered but unable to help herself.

> **Waitress:** "...We don't get many cute guys in here."

>

The coworker groaned, rolling her eyes.

> **Coworker:** "Hopeless."

>

At the doorway, Naji paused briefly, his sharp hearing catching the final exchange.

> **Naji:** "...Cute?"

>

A beat passed.

> **Naji:** "...Weird word."

>

Then, he stepped outside.

The door closed behind him with a soft click, and the city swallowed him once again. Voices, hurried footsteps, rumbling engines, and music leaking from open storefronts filled the air. Hundreds of lives were moving at once. Naji stood still, listening, watching, and learning.

> **Naji:** "...How do they keep track of all this?"

>

Nobody answered, which was exactly what he expected. He started walking.

A child ran past chasing a stray ball, a businessman nearly tripped over a parked bicycle, and two teenagers argued loudly over lunch money. Everything felt normal. Naji found himself staring at the mundane chaos.

> **Naji:** "...People really live like this. Every day."

>

Then, he noticed trouble. Because trouble, by its nature, was always loud.

In a narrow side street, three men had cornered a young girl. It was the usual, exhausting equation.

> **Thug:** "Come on. Just hand it over. We're being nice here."

>

The girl backed away against the wall, her eyes flashing with anger.

> **Girl:** "You've been following me for three blocks!"

>

> **Thug:** "That's because you're walking too fast."

>

Naji blinked from the mouth of the alleyway.

> **Naji:** "...That's a terrible argument."

>

He muttered. One peaceful meal—apparently, that was his absolute limit for the day. He stepped forward into the alley. The nearest thug noticed his approach and snapped over his shoulder,

> **Thug:** "What do you want?"

>

Naji actually thought about the question for a second.

> **Naji:** "...Five more minutes of peace."

>

> **Thug:** "What?"

>

> **Naji:** "Never mind."

>

The thug swung a baseball bat directly at his head. It was a terribly bad decision.

The bat stopped mid-air, completely motionless, as if reality itself had forgotten how movement worked. Total silence fell over the alley. The thug stared at his frozen weapon. The bat stayed suspended. Naji just stared back.

> **Naji:** "...Done?"

>

The second thug rushed him in a panic. The space immediately surrounding Naji pulsed. It wasn't violent, and it wasn't cruel—it was simply an absolute rejection of the thug's presence.

With a loud *CRASH*, the man disappeared. One instant he was running forward, and the next, he was deeply embedded in a pile of trash bags twenty meters away. There was no travel time, no visible movement. He was just gone.

The first thug froze, his eyes wide and trembling.

> **Thug:** "...What."

>

Naji tilted his head slightly.

> **Naji:** "...Good question."

>

The remaining thugs didn't wait to find out the answer. They turned and ran immediately, scrambling over one another to get away.

The girl stared at the empty alley, then did something unexpected: she laughed. Actually laughed.

> **Girl:** "You are the weirdest person I've met all week."

>

Naji frowned at the evaluation.

> **Naji:** "...I've heard that a lot today."

>

> **Girl:** "Maybe that's a sign."

>

Before Naji could answer her, a young man came jogging desperately toward them, looking protective, concerned, and thoroughly annoyed.

> **Young Man:** "AKARI!"

>

The moment he saw she was unharmed, the tension left his shoulders. He relaxed, his eyes darting to Naji, then to the fleeing criminals at the end of the street, and then back to Naji.

> **Young Man:** "...What happened?"

>

The girl pointed a finger directly at Naji.

> **Girl:** "He happened."

>

The young man blinked, looking between the two of them.

> **Young Man:** "...That explains absolutely nothing."

>

Naji nodded in complete agreement.

> **Naji:** "...I've been told that too."

>

The three of them ended up walking together down the bustling street—mostly because the girl was incredibly curious, her brother was deeply suspicious, and Naji genuinely had nowhere else to be.

Eventually, the brother broke the silence, glancing sideways at him.

> **Ren:** "So. Who are you?"

>

> **Naji:** "Naji."

>

> **Ren:** "We already got that. What's your story?"

>

For the first time today, Naji actually hesitated, thinking before he answered.

> **Naji:** "...Never knew my real parents."

>

Akari's bright smile immediately faded into a look of sympathy.

> **Akari:** "...Oh."

>

> **Naji:** "The man who raised me drowned me in debt. He died. I inherited the debt."

>

Naji continued walking casually, his voice completely level. The brother stared at him blankly.

> **Ren:** "...Seriously?"

>

Naji nodded.

> **Naji:** "...Pretty much."

>

> **Akari:** "That's awful."

>

> **Naji:** "It happened."

>

> **Akari:** "You say that way too calmly."

>

Naji shrugged.

> **Naji:** "...Being angry doesn't change it."

>

For a moment, neither sibling knew what to say to that. Then Akari smiled softly, shaking her head.

> **Akari:** "...You're kind of broken."

>

Naji thought about the assessment.

> **Naji:** "...Probably."

>

The blunt, unbothered honesty caught both siblings completely off guard.

They moved deeper into a safer, more affluent district. The atmosphere changed immediately—there was heavier security, cleaner streets, and far fewer blind corners.

The brother finally relaxed his posture, shoving his hands into his pockets.

> **Ren:** "A little safer here."

>

Naji glanced around at the pristine buildings and patrolling guards.

> **Naji:** "...Safer from what?"

>

> **Akari:** "Mutants."

>

> **Ren:** "And monsters."

>

Naji looked over at them, processing the words.

> **Naji:** "...Difference?"

>

Before they could elaborate, Akari cut in, her tone shifting instantly.

The air grew heavy. It was a subtle, deeply wrong shift in atmospheric pressure. Akari noticed it first.

> **Akari:** "Stop talking."

>

Ren frowned, confused by her sudden intensity.

> **Ren:** "Why?"

>

She reached over and grabbed Naji's sleeve tightly, pulling him along.

> **Akari:** "Walk normal."

>

Above them, a sleek black drone hovered, scanning the crowd below. The blue ring beneath its camera lens widened as it locked onto them. Then another drone appeared from behind a skyscraper. Then another. And another.

Ren's expression darkened.

> **Ren:** "...CDA."

>

Naji looked up at the mechanical swarm circling overhead.

> **Naji:** "...Camera?"

>

> **Akari:** "Don't look at it."

>

> **Naji:** "Why?"

>

The lead drone stopped dead in the air, pointing its lens directly at Naji. A synthesized, robotic voice echoed over the pavement:

> **Drone:** "UNIDENTIFIED SIGNATURE DETECTED."

>

Akari swore quietly under her breath.

> **Akari:** "...Not good."

>

The drones attempted to scan Naji, but the scanners whirred and failed. They tried again, and failed again. Reality itself refused to give the corporate machines a stable reading.

Amused by the mechanical struggle, Naji casually flicked his finger toward the sky. The drones froze instantly. Red error messages exploded across their digital interfaces, and the entire formation hastily retreated back into the skyline.

Akari and her brother stared at the sky, utterly speechless.

> **Ren:** "...They don't do that."

>

Naji blinked, looking entirely unfazed.

> **Naji:** "...Really?"

>

Neither sibling answered, because that reality was somehow far more terrifying than a standard security check.

They quickened their pace, eager to lose whatever electronic trailing might be left. The city above them stayed quiet for now, but something in the upper echelons had clearly started paying attention.

To break the tense silence, Akari spoke up, her voice tinged with lingering nerves.

> **Akari:** "Mutants are one thing."

>

Ren nodded, picking up where they had been interrupted.

> **Ren:** "But monsters are different."

>

Naji glanced over.

> **Naji:** "Different how?"

>

> **Akari:** "Mutants are people. They get powers."

>

> **Ren:** "Monsters aren't. Simple distinction. When you see one..."

>

Ren sighed, checking the alleys as they walked.

> **Ren:** "...You'll understand."

>

The city stretched endlessly around them in a blur of traffic, flashing neon lights, and massive digital advertisements. Life was everywhere. Ren pointed upward toward the towering electronic billboards displaying data streams.

> **Ren:** "There are classifications for threats. D-rank, C-rank, B-rank, A-rank."

>

Naji listened, absorbing the system.

> **Naji:** "...Hierarchy of danger."

>

> **Ren:** "Basically. The flying types are usually the worst."

>

Akari groaned loudly at the mention of them.

> **Akari:** "Oh, definitely. They attack before civilians even notice they're there."

>

Naji looked up at the vast expanse of clouds between the skyscrapers.

> **Naji:** "...Flying types."

>

> **Ren:** "Luckily, they're uncommon."

>

Right on cue, a massive shadow passed overhead, blotting out the morning sun. Akari stopped dead in her tracks. Ren stopped talking mid-sentence. Naji looked up calmly.

> **Naji:** "...Interesting timing."

>

The shadow passed again, larger and much closer this time. Then, a horrific, piercing scream tore through the air. The sky seemed to split apart as mass panic exploded down the street.

> **Civilian:** "MONSTER!"

>

A civilian shrieked, tripping over themselves to flee.

A massive, winged creature descended rapidly from the clouds, diving directly toward the concrete jungle—and directly toward their position. Ren's face went completely pale, his eyes wide with horror.

> **Ren:** "...I hate being right."

>

Naji looked at him, then at the diving monster, and then back to Ren.

> **Naji:** "...You summoned it."

>

> **Ren:** "WHAT?!"

>

> **Naji:** "The timing is suspicious."

>

> **Ren:** "I DIDN'T SUMMON A MONSTER!"

>

Akari immediately pointed an accusing finger at her brother, joining in despite the danger.

> **Akari:** "Honestly, Ren, the evidence isn't looking good."

>

> **Ren:** "NOT YOU TOO?!"

>

The monster screamed again, diving faster, the sheer pressure of its descent making the air tremble. The city held its breath.

And Naji calmly stepped forward, clearing his path. For the first time since he had arrived in this strange city, gravity began to answer his call.

> **Naji:** "...Ah."

>

His eyes locked onto the descending beast, a sharp focus overtaking his features.

> **Naji:** "...Now I understand."
