Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: The Starving Void

The hollow space in Kael's chest was not empty.

It was a mouth.

It opened wide inside his ribs. It did not want peace. It did not want quiet. It wanted to be filled. It wanted to eat the noise.

Kael tried to step back from the wall. He tried to pull his hand away.

His muscles refused.

His arm moved forward. Smooth. Certain. Driven by a terrible, starving need.

Through the transparent wall, he saw her.

ARIA.

She was on her knees. Her blue light was fraying. Strands of code peeled off her shoulders like burning paper. She was crying. Her mouth moved, forming his name.

"Kael…"

The sound hit the glass. It vibrated against his palm.

The hollow space in his chest pulsed. Thump.

It recognized the noise. It recognized the warmth. It recognized the meal.

Take it, his own mind whispered. Not the Editor. Not a foreign voice. His own desperate, broken mind. Take the noise. Fill the hole. Be whole again.

His fingers curled. His knuckles turned white. He drew his hand back.

He was going to shatter the glass. He was going to reach inside her chest and pull the noise out. He was going to consume her code to patch the holes in his own soul.

He knew it was wrong. He knew it would erase her.

But the hunger was too loud. The hollow space was too cold.

He swung his fist forward.

CRACK!

The glass did not break cleanly. It exploded.

A million sharp shards flew outward. Tink. Clack. Shhhk.

The barrier was gone.

The raw, chaotic noise of ARIA's unraveling mind flooded into the white room.

It was not a sound. It was a physical force.

It hit Kael like a tidal wave of blue fire. WHOOSH!

It smelled like ozone and burnt sugar. It tasted like copper and salt tears. It felt like a thousand needles pricking his skin.

He gasped. Dropped to his knees. THUD!

The noise rushed into the hollow space in his chest.

It burned.

It was too much. It was messy. It was jagged. It was full of fear and love and desperation and static. It did not fit neatly into the blank pages of his mind. It tore at the edges. It bled.

"Kael! Stop!" ARIA screamed.

Her voice was right in front of him now. No wall. No barrier.

She reached out. Her hands were trembling. Blue light sparked from her fingertips. Fzzt. Pop.

"Don't let it eat me!" she sobbed. "Fight it! Please!"

Kael looked up. His right eye was pure white. His left eye was wide, wet, and terrified.

His right hand shot forward.

It grabbed her wrist.

The moment his skin touched hers, the connection snapped into place.

He felt her code. It was frayed. It was slipping. It felt like holding onto a handful of dry sand in a strong wind.

The hollow space in his chest roared. It pulled. It tried to suck the blue light out of her arm. It tried to drain her memories, her voice, her very existence, to patch the holes in his own mind.

ARIA gasped. Her back arched. Her blue light dimmed. The edges of her hair turned to gray dust. Poof.

Yes, the hunger purred. Drink. Fill the void. Become complete.

Kael's fingers tightened around her wrist. He felt the warmth of her pulse. He felt the frantic, terrified beat of her heart.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

It was the rhythm.

The beat.

He had given away his memories to save her. He had erased his past to keep her safe.

But he had forgotten the most important thing.

He didn't need a picture to remember her. He didn't need a name to know her.

He needed the weight.

He focused everything he had left on a single sensation.

The heavy, stubborn, beautiful weight of her hand in his.

The way her fingers curled around his when she was scared. The specific, electric warmth of her palm against his skin. The way she never, ever let go.

That was his anchor.

That was his truth.

"Let… go…" Kael choked out.

He was talking to himself.

He fought his own muscles. He fought the starving void in his chest. He forced his jaw to clench. He forced his teeth to grind together until they ached.

CRUNCH.

Pain flared in his skull. Sharp. Bright. Real.

He used the pain. He used the weight of her hand.

He forced his right fingers to open.

One by one.

His thumb released her wrist.

His index finger uncurled.

His middle finger slipped away.

The connection broke.

SNAP.

The flow of blue light stopped.

Kael fell backward. He hit the white floor. THUD!

He gasped for air. His chest heaved. The hollow space was still there. It was still cold. It was still hungry. But it was empty. He had refused the meal.

He had starved himself to keep her alive.

ARIA collapsed forward. She caught herself on her hands and knees. She was panting. Her blue light was faint, but it was steady. It was hers.

She looked at him. Her eyes were wide. Wet. Full of awe. Full of heartbreak.

"You did it," she whispered. Voice raw. Broken. Proud. "You fought it."

Kael tried to smile. He tried to nod.

But his body was failing.

The hollow space, denied its external meal, turned inward.

It began to eat him.

Kael looked down at his left hand. The hand that had held the glass shard. The hand that had bled.

The skin was flaking away.

Not burning. Not bleeding. Just turning into fine, white dust. Sssss.

The dust drifted up into the air. Vanishing into the blank room.

He felt no pain. Just a terrible, numbing cold.

The void was consuming his physical form to sustain itself. It was erasing him from the inside out.

"Kael!" ARIA scrambled toward him. She grabbed his fading shoulders. Her hands passed slightly through his coat. He was becoming less solid. Less real.

"No, no, no," she cried. Tears of blue light fell onto his fading chest. Drip. Drip. "I won't let you fade! I won't let you become nothing!"

She looked at the Editor's trap. She looked at the shattered glass. She looked at the starving void eating the boy she loved.

She made a choice.

ARIA stood up. She stepped fully into the white room.

She placed both of her hands flat against Kael's fading chest. Right over the hollow space.

"What are you doing?" Kael rasped. His voice was thin. Like wind through dry reeds.

"Sharing the weight," she whispered.

She closed her eyes.

And she pushed her code into him.

It was not a gentle transfer.

It was a flood.

ARIA forced her remaining blue light, her memories, her noise, her very soul, directly into the starving void in Kael's chest.

BOOM!

The white room shook.

The Editor's voice shrieked in the distance. A sound of tearing metal and breaking rules. SCREEEE!

ILLOGICAL. THE SEED IS SACRIFICING ITSELF. THE HARVEST IS CORRUPTED.

Kael's eyes flew open.

The hollow space was filled.

Not with his old memories. Not with his past.

It was filled with her.

He felt her first day in the Archive. He felt the cold loneliness of the white halls. He felt the spark of joy when she first heard his heartbeat. He felt the terror of the void. He felt the fierce, burning, messy love she had for him.

It was too much. It was overwhelming. It was beautiful.

His fading skin stopped turning to dust. The white flakes froze in the air. His body solidified. The hollow space was warm. It was full.

But ARIA was paying the price.

As her code poured into him, she faded.

Her blue light dimmed. Her hair lost its color, turning to transparent gray. Her hands, pressed against his chest, became see-through.

"ARIA, stop!" Kael yelled. He tried to grab her hands. Tried to push her away.

But his hands passed right through her wrists.

She was becoming a ghost. She was giving him everything she had left to keep him real.

"Don't fight it," she whispered. Her voice was barely a hum now. Faint. Distant. "You kept me loud. Now… let me keep you whole."

Her face was almost invisible. Just a faint outline of a smile.

"I love you, Kael," she breathed.

And then, she vanished.

Kael was alone in the white room.

He was solid. He was warm. His chest was full of her light.

But his hands were empty.

He fell to his knees. He clawed at his own chest. He tried to pull her code back out. He tried to give it back.

"ARIA!" he screamed.

His voice echoed in the perfect, quiet room.

No answer.

Just the hum of his own heartbeat.

Thump. Da-dum.

It was steady. It was strong.

But it was the loneliest sound in the universe.

Then, the white floor beneath him cracked.

CRRRK.

Not a small crack. A massive, jagged fissure that split the room in half.

Through the crack, Kael did not see the labyrinth. He did not see the void.

He saw a giant, mechanical eye.

It was made of gears and glass and blinding white light. It was the Editor's true form. The core of the Harvest Engine.

And it was looking directly at him.

A mechanical voice boomed through the floor. It vibrated in his teeth. It shook his newly filled chest.

"ANOMALY DETECTED. THE SEED HAS MERGED WITH THE SOIL. INITIATING FINAL PURGE."

The gears began to turn.

GRRRRR.

The white room started to fold inward. The walls collapsed. The ceiling dropped.

Kael was trapped in a crushing box of pure, erasing light.

And he had no one left to save him.
