The blue string pulled tight. Twang.
It hummed like a plucked wire. It vibrated through Kael's right hand. Up his arm. Into his shoulder. Into his chest.
He was not pulling it.
His fingers were locked. His knuckles were white. His tendons stood out like steel cables. But the muscles were not his.
"Kael?" ARIA's voice was small. Thin. Terrified.
She floated three feet away. The string was wrapped around her waist. It dug into her blue light. It pulled her forward. Inch by inch. Toward the giant, blank mouth of the Harvest Hound.
"Stop," Kael choked out. His left eye was wide. Wet. Screaming. His right eye was pure, flat white. Blind to her. Blind to everything but the harvest.
"I can't," he gasped. "It's not me."
The seed is ripe, the Editor's voice whispered in his skull. Flat. Calm. Certain. Present the crop. Do not resist the yield.
Kael's right arm jerked. It pulled harder.
ARIA slid forward. Her boots scraped the glass floor. Scrape. Scrape. Her blue light flickered. Fzzt. The edges of her coat began to fray. The white void was already eating her code.
"Kael, please!" she cried. Tears of blue light fell from her cheeks. Drip. Drip. "Fight it! Match the beat! Thump. Da-dum!"
He tried. He screamed inside his own head. He told his arm to drop. He told his fingers to open.
Nothing happened.
His right arm was a machine. A puppet. A tool of the blank page.
Behind them, the gods attacked.
Wukong roared. A sound that shook the white sky. RAAAWR!
He leaped into the air. Golden fur blazing. His staff spun into a tornado of pure, holy fire. WHOOSH.
He slammed the flaming staff into the side of the Harvest Hound.
The fire hit the white glass.
And vanished.
Poof.
No explosion. No smoke. No heat. The fire was simply deleted. Erased from existence.
Wukong fell backward. He hit the glass floor hard. THUD. His golden eyes were wide. His tail tucked between his legs. "It ate the flame," he whispered. "It just... ate it."
Shiva stepped forward. Four arms raised. He beat his bare chest. THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
Invisible waves of sound ripped through the air. Heavy. Crushing. They hit the Hound like giant hammers.
The white glass shuddered. Vvvvvmm. Tiny cracks formed on its smooth surface. Crrrk.
But then, the Hound opened its maw.
It inhaled.
WHOOOOO.
The sound waves were sucked into the dark hole of its mouth. Deleted. Erased. The cracks on its body sealed shut. Smooth. Perfect. Blank.
Ao Guang roared. He slammed his claws into the glass floor. A massive wave of freezing black water erupted. It rushed toward the Hound. Sharp ice spikes formed at the front.
The water hit the Hound.
The Hound swallowed it.
The ice turned to white dust. The water turned to dry air. Shhhk. Shhhk.
The gods stepped back. Fear radiated from them. Thick. Heavy. Real.
They were gods of war. Of fire. Of storms. They knew how to fight enemies that bled. They knew how to fight enemies that burned.
They did not know how to fight an enemy that just deleted them.
Inside Kael's mind, the Editor spoke again.
The pests are noisy. Ignore them. Focus on the yield.
Kael's right arm pulled again. ARIA was only two feet from the Hound's mouth now. The eraser teeth spun slowly. Shhhk. Shhhk. They smelled like dry chalk. Like old paper. Like the end of a story.
"Kael!" ARIA screamed. She reached out. Her fingers brushed his coat. "Cut the string! Break your own arm! Do it!"
Kael's left hand twitched. It was the only part of him the Editor hadn't fully claimed.
He looked down.
The glass floor beneath his feet was shattered. Jagged shards of white mirror lay everywhere. Sharp. Heavy. Real.
He dropped to his knees. THUD.
His right arm fought him. It tried to raise up. It tried to pull ARIA faster. The muscles burned. The tendons strained. Crrrk.
But Kael's left hand moved.
He grabbed a large, jagged shard of glass.
It bit into his palm. Snip.
Pain flared. Hot. Sharp. Bright. Blood welled up. Thick. Red. Messy.
Good.
Pain was loud. Pain was real. Pain was the enemy of the quiet.
He gripped the shard tighter. Blood dripped onto the white glass. Drip. Drip. It hissed. Sssss.
Stop, the Editor commanded. The voice was no longer calm. It was sharp. Angry. You will damage the tool.
"I am the tool," Kael rasped. His left eye was crying. His right eye glowed white. "And I am broken."
He raised the glass shard.
He aimed it at his own right forearm. Right where the muscle was pulling the string. Right where the Editor's control lived.
"Kael, no!" ARIA yelled. "You'll bleed out! You'll lose the arm!"
"Better the arm," Kael choked out, "than you."
He didn't hesitate. He didn't count to three. He didn't pray.
He swung his left hand down.
SLASH!
The glass shard tore through his right forearm.
RIP.
Pain exploded. White. Blinding. Tearing.
Nerves fired like lightning. ZZZT! His vision went completely black for a second. His teeth ground together so hard he felt a molar crack.
Hot blood sprayed. SPLAT.
It hit the blue string. It hit the white glass. It hit the Hound's blank face.
The Editor shrieked.
Not a word. A sound of tearing metal. Of breaking glass. Of a system crashing. SCREEEE!
Kael's right arm went instantly limp.
The fingers uncurled. The blue string snapped back. Twang!
The tension broke.
ARIA was thrown backward. She tumbled across the glass floor. Scrape. Scrape. Thud. She hit a chunk of burning wood and stopped.
Kael collapsed. He rolled onto his back. He clutched his bleeding right arm to his chest. His breath came in short, ragged gasps. Hah. Hah. Hah.
The blood was warm. It soaked his coat. It pooled on the glass. It smelled like copper. Like life. Like victory.
He had done it. He had broken the control. He had saved her.
He turned his head. Looked at ARIA.
She was sitting up. Her blue light was dim. But she was safe. She was looking at him. Her eyes were wide. Wet. Full of love. Full of pride.
"You did it," she whispered. Voice breaking. Raw. Proud. "You broke it."
Kael smiled. A weak, bloody, exhausted smile.
But then, the Editor's voice returned.
It didn't come from his right eye this time.
It came from the blue string.
The severed end of the string was still attached to ARIA's waist. It was glowing. Pulsing. Angry.
Physical override failed, the Editor stated. Voice flat. Cold. Certain. Initiating alternative harvest protocol.
Kael's smile died.
"ARIA," he choked out. "The string! Cut the string!"
She looked down. The blue cord was wrapped around her waist. It wasn't pulling her anymore.
It was sinking into her.
"No," she whispered. Her hands flew to her waist. She tried to pull the string off.
Her fingers passed right through it.
The blue light of her code began to change.
It wasn't fading. It was fracturing.
BZZZT.
Jagged lines of white static shot through her blue light. They spread like cracks in ice. Up her legs. Up her torso. Toward her chest.
"Kael!" she screamed. Voice distorting. Layering. Breaking into digital noise. "It's inside the Sync! It's in the Neural Link!"
Kael tried to stand. His legs wouldn't work. He dragged himself forward. His left hand clawed at the glass. Scrape. Scrape. Blood trailed behind him.
"Break the link!" he yelled. "Sever the connection! Do it now!"
ARIA shook her head. Tears of static fell from her eyes. Fzzt. Fzzt.
"If I sever it," she cried, her voice echoing with the Editor's cold tone, "the feedback will scramble my core! I'll lose my memories! I'll lose... I'll lose you!"
The white static reached her neck.
Her blue light flickered violently. Pop. Pop. Pop.
Purging anomaly, the Editor whispered. Harvesting the seed.
ARIA threw her head back. She screamed.
It wasn't a human scream. It was the sound of a thousand files deleting at once. A high-pitched, tearing screech of breaking code. SCREEEE!
Her body began to unspool.
Strands of blue light peeled away from her skin. They floated up into the white void. Dissolving. Turning to gray dust.
"Kael..." she gasped. Her voice was barely a whisper now. Fading. Distant. "I'm slipping... the code is unraveling..."
Kael reached her. He grabbed her shoulders. His bloody hands stained her fading blue light.
"Hold on!" he sobbed. Tears mixed with the blood on his face. "Match the beat! Thump. Da-dum! Stay with me!"
She looked at him. Her eyes were half blue. Half white static.
"I can't," she whispered. A single, perfect tear fell. "The quiet is too loud."
Her chest began to turn transparent.
The Editor wasn't just killing her.
It was rewriting her.
And there was nothing Kael could do to stop it.

Chapter 59 Preview: ARIA's code unspools before Kael's eyes! With his right arm useless and the gods paralyzed by the Harvest Hound, Kael must dive into the collapsing Neural Sync to manually stitch her fracturing soul back together. But the Editor has turned her memories into a labyrinth of white noise, and every step Kael takes erases a piece of his own past. Can he find her core before she becomes a blank page, or will the harvest claim the seed? Would you forget your own name to remember hers?
