The silence after the battle felt unnatural.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
Just… empty.
Kai stood where everything had shattered—ground split, debris scattered, the air still carrying faint traces of distortion. His breathing had finally steadied, but his body still felt off.
Like something inside him hadn't fully settled.
"…we're leaving," Riven said.
Kai looked up.
"…just like that?"
Riven didn't answer immediately. His gaze swept across the broken city, as if confirming something only he could see.
"…this place is finished."
Kai frowned.
"…it was already finished."
"…no," Riven said quietly.
A pause.
"…now it's noticed."
Kai's chest tightened.
"…noticed by what?"
Riven turned and started walking.
"…you'll understand soon enough."
Kai hesitated, then followed.
The streets stretched endlessly, filled with silence and ruin. Buildings leaned at unnatural angles, some reduced to piles of concrete and steel. The sky above remained dull and lifeless, like it had forgotten how to change.
"…you've been here this whole time?" Kai asked.
"…watching you?" Riven replied without looking back.
Kai didn't respond.
Because that answer was enough.
They walked for a long time.
Long enough for the silence to start pressing in again.
Long enough for Kai's thoughts to drift back.
To her.
Lina.
His chest tightened slightly.
"…don't," Riven said.
Kai looked up.
"…don't what?"
"…fall back into it."
Kai frowned.
"…you don't get to tell me that."
Riven stopped.
Turned.
"…if you lose control again," he said calmly, "you won't get pulled back."
A pause.
"…you'll disappear."
Kai held his gaze.
"…then I won't lose control."
Riven studied him for a moment.
Then turned again.
"…we'll see."
They kept moving.
Until—
Kai saw it.
At first, it looked like a mirage.
A faint line stretching across the horizon.
But as they got closer—
It became clearer.
Brighter.
Real.
A massive barrier stood before them, extending far beyond what Kai could see. It shimmered faintly with a soft blue glow, like light trapped behind glass.
"…what is that…?" Kai asked quietly.
Riven stopped a few steps away from it.
"…the Veil."
Kai stared.
"…it's huge…"
"…it has to be."
Kai stepped closer.
The closer he got, the more he felt it.
A pressure.
But not like before.
This one was stable.
Controlled.
Heavy—but not chaotic.
"…this feels different…"
"…because it is," Riven replied.
"…this place isn't broken."
Kai's heart skipped.
"…there are people behind this…?"
Riven glanced at him.
"…yes."
That single word hit harder than anything else.
People.
Alive.
Kai stepped even closer, raising his hand slightly.
"…so they just… hid behind this?"
"…they survived," Riven corrected.
"…there's a difference."
Kai clenched his jaw.
But he didn't argue.
Because part of him—
Understood.
Riven stepped forward.
Without hesitation—
He walked straight into the Veil.
And vanished.
Kai froze for half a second.
Then followed.
The moment he passed through—
Everything changed.
The air hit him first.
Cleaner.
Lighter.
Breathable.
Then the sound.
Voices.
Movement.
Life.
Kai's eyes widened.
The sky was clearer here. Not perfect—but alive. Buildings stood intact, lights glowing faintly from windows. People moved through the streets, talking, working, living like the world outside didn't exist.
Kai stopped walking.
"…this… isn't real…"
Riven stood ahead, watching him.
"…it is."
Kai turned slowly.
Taking it all in.
"…how… is this possible…?"
"…control," Riven said.
"…and sacrifice."
Kai swallowed.
"…this place…"
"…what is it called?"
Riven looked at him.
"…Haven."
The word lingered.
Kai let out a slow breath.
"…Haven…"
For the first time since everything began—
The world didn't feel like it was ending.
But somehow—
That made him even more uneasy.
Because if this place existed—
Then everything outside it…
Had been abandoned.
And as Kai stood there, surrounded by life—
He couldn't shake the feeling that he didn't belong in it.
