Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 — Heartwood

The system confirmed the threshold on Wednesday morning during Maya's session.

He'd been tracking the markers daily — checking the status tab every morning since sprouting, watching the numbers move in small increments toward the requirements he'd memorized. Height. Stem diameter. Root development. Leaf count. Each one had been close for several days and he'd known it was coming but knowing something is coming and having it arrive are two different things.

The notification appeared four minutes into Maya's session, while the loop was running at the scale it had been running since the method activated.

Sapling threshold reached. All markers confirmed.

Assisted cultivation initiation available.

He read it once.

Then he initiated.

He'd expected the system to do something gradual. A slow structured process, methodical, the kind of thing that matched the general tone of everything the system had given him so far — unhurried, precise, designed to work within his limits rather than push against them.

That was not what happened.

The moment he confirmed the initiation the system pulled. Every ambient thread of spiritual energy in the space around him — the diffuse background presence that had been his resource before Maya, the thin trickle that existed in any living environment — was drawn toward him simultaneously and with a force that had nothing gradual about it. The loop running through Maya's session redoubled. The raw energy flowing in from her absorption hit a current that was already moving fast and got carried along in it.

He had no nerve endings, no chest to tighten, no breath to catch. But he had the tree's awareness of itself and what he felt in that moment was every part of him orient toward a single point in a way that hadn't been possible before. The center. The place where a tree's core lived, where the oldest wood was, where the rings of growth accumulated year by year in a record that outlasted everything around it.

The heartwood.

The system was building it. Forcing the first crystallization of qi into the dense structured core that would be his cultivation center — not a cavity, not an empty space to be filled. The opposite. The hardest part of the tree. The part that didn't bend.

He understood somewhere in the middle of it why the system had called this assisted rather than independent. A tree left to cultivate on its own might spend years accumulating enough qi for the heartwood to begin forming naturally. The system was doing in the span of Maya's session what would otherwise take seasons — forcing the threshold with an energy expenditure that required drawing on everything available in the immediate environment and more.

Something else was happening simultaneously that he hadn't anticipated. The proto-heartwood — the rudimentary structure that had been doing crude refinement work since the assisted cultivation session on Day 24 — was being absorbed into the real heartwood as it formed. Not replaced exactly, more like subsumed — the rough pathways of the proto-heartwood becoming the foundation that the proper heartwood crystallized around, the crude early work integrated into something far more structured and capable. He felt the transition the way you might feel a rough draft becoming the final version — the same essential shape but completely transformed in quality.

The proto-heartwood had retained nothing for him. Everything it refined had gone to Maya or dispersed. The real heartwood was different. He could feel the difference immediately — the first small share of the refined energy staying, held in the forming core, accumulating rather than dispersing. Small. But his.

The excess of the initiation energy had nowhere to go but outward.

He felt himself grow.

His stem thickened. His roots pushed further into the soil. His existing leaves expanded. A new growth tip emerged at his apex and began its upward reach. He had no way to measure any of it from the inside but he understood it was happening at a rate that had nothing to do with normal plant growth.

When Maya ended her session at twenty minutes the pull released. The loop returned to its passive running level. The apartment around him settled back into its Wednesday morning quality — the same footsteps, the same light, the same household beginning to wake.

Everything the same. Everything different.

He checked his status.

[ STATUS ]

Vessel: Mangifera indica (Mango Tree)

Stage: Sapling

Permission Level: 1

Cultivation: Active — Qi Gathering Stage 1 (2%)

Heartwood: Forming — Initial crystallization complete

Immortal Arts: None

Techniques: None

Heartwood Connection: Active — 1 connection

He read through it line by line.

Stage: Sapling. He'd been a seedling since he broke the soil surface. The word was different and the difference was real — not just a label change but a threshold crossed in a way that couldn't be undone.

Cultivation: Active — Qi Gathering Stage 1 (2%). Two percent. The heartwood formation had consumed most of the initial qi accumulation as the cost of establishing the core — what remained after the crystallization was the starting balance. Two percent of the first stage of something that went much further than he could currently see.

Heartwood: Forming — Initial crystallization complete. The core existed now. Not finished — forming, the status said, which meant the first crystallization was done but the heartwood would continue to develop and solidify as cultivation progressed. It was there. That was what mattered.

He sat with the status panel for a long time.

He thought about what two percent meant in practical terms.

Nine stages to complete Qi Gathering. Each stage representing ten percent of the heartwood's initial capacity. He asked the system for a current accumulation rate estimate based on the loop as it currently ran.

The system's estimate came back: six to eight weeks per stage under current loop conditions — the morning sessions and passive proximity at home. He ran the full calculation. Nine stages at that rate meant fourteen to eighteen months to complete Qi Gathering alone. Longer for Qi Refinement. Longer still for Foundation Establishment.

He sat with those numbers without rushing to conclusions. The estimate was based on what he could directly observe — the morning sessions, the passive proximity time when she was in the apartment. He had no way to know what she did during the hours she was away or whether the environment she worked in had any bearing on the rate. The calculation was the most accurate one available to him with the information he had.

It was slow. He understood why — she was a beginner with unconditioned meridians and a session ceiling that wouldn't rise quickly. The loop was efficient but it was working with what she could provide and what she could provide right now was limited by where she was in her cultivation.

He thought about the multiple connections question. He'd been filing it since before the Heartwood connection established. The system allowed multiple connections — each would add another energy source to the loop, another practitioner absorbing raw energy, the refinement running simultaneously. The accumulation rate would increase. The timeline would compress.

He thought about the household around him. Four sets of footsteps he'd mapped over weeks. He knew Maya's root composition from the initial scan — wood primary, high quality, the match that had made everything clean. He knew nothing about the other three. Adding a Heartwood connection wasn't something he took lightly — he'd thought carefully enough about the first one to know how much weight it carried. Setting someone on a path they hadn't chosen, without their knowledge of the source, was not something he was going to do on the basis of wanting faster numbers.

He needed more information. He'd return to it when he had enough to make the decision properly.

He noted that perception range expanded at Stage 3 — two stages away, roughly three to four months at current rate. He noted it and moved on.

The day ran its course around him.

More movement than a typical Wednesday, more sustained presence in the kitchen, a quality of attention directed toward his area of the windowsill at a frequency he hadn't felt before. The household was aware of him in a new way today. He couldn't know why. He could only note that the pattern had changed.

Maya's afternoon contact was longer than usual — not the quick check but the sustained attention he associated with her thinking about something specific. She was standing at the windowsill working something through. He had no way to know what. He waited.

The scan had happened on Monday evening — two days ago, the night of the family conversation he had no access to but whose aftermath he'd been reading in the changed quality of the household's attention ever since.

The light footsteps had come to his pot late that Monday evening. Less practiced than Maya's, more deliberate in a different sense — not the deliberateness of habit but of someone who had decided to do something and was doing it carefully. He'd requested the scan when the contact was made and the result had surfaced within a second.

Unknown individual. Female. Multiple roots. Metal and fire as primaries — an unusual combination, the two elements not harmonious in the classical framework. Wood and water as secondaries. Above average root quality. Heartwood connection available.

He'd filed it and done nothing with it. He had a scan result and a set of affinities and that was all he had. It wasn't enough to act on.

What it told him, combined with Maya's wood primary affinity, was that the elemental composition of this household was varied. If the pattern held across all four members — and the system's documentation suggested root composition within family groups showed correlation without being identical — then the other two sets of footsteps likely had their own distinct affinities. Multiple connections would mean multiple elements to eventually serve. His current heartwood produced wood element energy and nothing else.

That was a limitation worth thinking about carefully.

He'd been thinking about it since the Monday scan. He'd been to his question tab about it. He understood the biological adaptation mechanic — the conscious cultivating tree's capacity to reshape heartwood structures to produce non-native elemental energies, with elemental specimen analysis as the catalyst. He understood what it would require and why he couldn't start yet.

He filed all of it and returned to the present.

He checked his status one more time before the night settled fully.

Two percent.

He thought about a Tuesday afternoon and a pavement he'd walked a hundred times. He thought about a seed in soil and weeks of darkness and a hand that had come through the dome at the same time every morning until he'd known it well enough to trust it.

He thought about a mango from a street market in Bangkok and his mother handing it to him without ceremony and how small things had a way of mattering more than their size suggested they should.

He settled into the dark and the quiet and the slow patient work of being a tree.
