Chapter 45 - part 43

-

Some fears don't leave.

They settle.

Quietly.

Into habits.

Into silence.

Into the way someone holds you—

a little tighter than before.

[Morning – His House]

The sunlight came in the same way.

Soft.

Warm.

Normal.

But nothing—

felt the same.

Anxin woke up first.

Not because she was rested.

Because her body didn't let her sleep deeply anymore.

Her eyes opened slowly—

adjusting to the light—

then instinctively—

she turned.

He was there.

Close.

Too close.

One arm wrapped tightly around her waist—

not loose—

not relaxed—

Firm.

Like even in sleep—

he didn't trust distance.

Her face rested against his chest.

And for a moment—

she didn't move.

Just listened.

His heartbeat.

Steady.

Strong.

Real.

Her fingers slowly curled into his shirt.

Grounding.

Then—

he shifted.

Not waking fully—

but his arm tightened instinctively—

pulling her even closer.

A low breath left him.

"...don't move..."

Half-asleep.

But clear.

Anxin blinked.

Then—

a small smile touched her lips.

"...I wasn't."

That was enough.

He woke.

[Hedi POV – ]

She was still there.

That was always the first thought now.

Not the day.

Not work.

Not anything else.

Her.

His hand moved—

not urgently—

but immediately—

to her face.

Thumb brushing lightly against her cheek.

Checking.

Not visibly.

But enough.

"...you woke up early."

"...you didn't let me go."

A pause.

"...I wasn't planning to."

Honest.

Too honest.

She didn't respond immediately.

Instead—

she shifted slightly—

her leg tangling more with his—

closing whatever small space remained.

And this time—

he didn't pretend it was accidental.

His hand moved—

sliding from her cheek—

to the back of her neck—

fingers threading lightly into her hair.

Then—

he leaned down.

Not rushed.

Slow.

His lips brushed against hers.

Soft.

But he didn't pull away.

Not immediately.

Instead—

he lingered.

Then—

barely—

he caught her lower lip between his—

a light nibble—

not rough—

but enough to make her inhale slightly.

"...Didi..."

A warning.

Soft.

Ignored.

His lips moved again—

this time slower—

more deliberate—

like he was memorizing something.

Not claiming.

Confirming.

[Anxin POV –

This wasn't new.

But it felt different.

Because now—

there was something behind it.

Not just affection.

Need.

And that—

she felt.

His lips moved from hers—

to her jaw—

slow—

unhurried—

then lower—

to her neck—

where he paused.

Breathing her in.

Then—

a soft press of his lips.

Not marking.

Staying.

She exhaled slowly—

her hand moving to his shoulder—

not pushing him away—

just... holding.

"...you're doing this more now."

He didn't deny it.

"...I know."

[Kitchen –

Later—

everything looked normal again.

Too normal.

Breakfast.

Table.

Silence.

But not empty silence.

Different.

Hedi sat beside her.

Not across.

Close enough—

that their arms brushed occasionally.

Not accidental.

The plate sat between them.

Not two.

One.

Anxin noticed.

"...you didn't take yours."

"...I am."

He didn't look up.

Instead—

he picked up a piece—

and held it toward her.

"...eat."

She blinked.

"...I can feed myself."

"...I know."

A pause.

"...then why?"

This time—

he looked at her.

"...because I want to."

Simple.

No explanation.

She didn't argue.

Just leaned slightly forward—

taking the bite.

And for a moment—

their eyes didn't move.

Then—

she picked something up too.

Held it toward him.

"...then you too."

A pause.

He didn't hesitate.

Leaned in—

took it.

Slow.

Deliberate.

And when he pulled back—

his gaze stayed on her.

Longer than necessary.

When she stood up—

his hand caught her wrist.

Not tight.

Just enough to stop her.

"...where."

"...water."

A pause.

Then—

he let go.

But his eyes followed her.

Until she came back.

And only then—

his shoulders relaxed.

Slightly.

[Office – Hedi POV]

Work didn't change.

But he did.

More calls.

More security.

More presence.

More control.

Because now—

he knew.

It wasn't a possibility.

It was real.

Someone had already reached her once.

That meant—

they would try again.

And this time—

he wouldn't allow even proximity.

[Hospital – Anxin POV]

She felt it too.

Not fear—

but awareness.

Her steps slower.

Her eyes sharper.

Every unfamiliar face—

registered.

Every closed door—

noticed.

But what changed the most—

wasn't the environment.

It was her thoughts.

Because now—

every time something felt wrong—

she thought of him.

[Evening – ]

When he came to pick her—

he didn't stay in the car.

He was already inside.

Waiting.

Standing near the corridor.

Watching.

The moment she saw him—

something in her chest eased.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

"...you came in."

"...yes."

"...you don't trust outside anymore?"

A pause.

"...I trust you being in my sight."

That answer—

was honest.

Too honest.

She walked toward him.

And before she could say anything—

his hand moved—

pulling her closer—

not gently—

but not rough either—

just immediate.

Like distance—

was no longer acceptable.

Then—

he sat down—

and without asking—

pulled her onto his lap.

"...Didi—"

"...stay."

That was it.

No explanation.

No justification.

She hesitated.

Not resisting.

Just processing.

Then—

she relaxed slightly against him.

And that was enough.

His arm wrapped around her waist—

secure—

grounding—

firm.

His face lowered slightly—

resting near her shoulder—

then slowly—

his lips brushed against her ear.

Soft.

Then—

a light press—

just below it.

Her breath hitched.

"...you're doing this in public now?"

"...yes."

No shame.

No hesitation.

"why"

"Because I want to feel at ease"

"...you're different," she said softly.

"...I am aware."

"...this has not just cared anymore."

A pause.

"...no."

His grip tightened slightly.

"...this is what happens when I almost lose you."

Silence.

That line—

settled deep.

Not dramatic.

But real.

She turned slightly—

looking at him properly now.

"...you didn't lose me."

"...I was close enough to it."

And that—

was the truth he couldn't ignore.

Her hand moved—

to his face—

lightly.

"...I'm still here."

A pause.

"...and I didn't let go."

His eyes softened—

just slightly.

Then—

he leaned forward—

and kissed her again.

Not rushed.

But deeper than morning.

More certain.

More... needed.

And this time—

when he pulled back—

he didn't create distance.

He stayed.

Forehead resting lightly against hers.

"...don't make me learn how to live without that."

Her fingers tightened around his shirt again.

"...you won't have to."

Some fears don't disappear.

But sometimes—

they turn into something else.

Something closer.

Something tighter.

Something that makes letting go—

impossible.
