Chapter 29 - The Night Before Heaven Burns

The night before judgement always feels quieter.

Not peaceful.

Never peaceful.

Just quiet in the way a battlefield becomes quiet before armies remember they hate each other.

I stood on the rooftop of our house, looking over the sleeping city.

The wind was cold.

The moon was sharp.

And somewhere beyond the lights and silence—

The Crimson Church was preparing to decide whether I deserved to exist.

Honestly?

Rude.

Very rude.

I adjusted the black coat over my shoulders and let the night settle around me.

Tomorrow, Heaven would stop asking politely.

Tomorrow, hunters would come with silver and righteousness.

Tomorrow, blood would answer.

But tonight—

Tonight was mine.

Or so I thought.

Behind me—

soft footsteps.

No need to turn.

I already knew.

Seraphina.

Of course.

She walked across the rooftop as if midnight had learnt elegance.

Black dress.

Crimson eyes.

Danger wrapped in beauty.

She stopped beside me, looking at the city.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

That was normal with her.

Silence had always been one of our languages.

Then she said—

"You are thinking too much."

I smiled faintly.

"I'm surrounded by four vampire women and one holy war."

I looked at her.

"Thinking feels reasonable."

Seraphina crossed her arms.

"Overthinking is unattractive."

Harsh.

Fair.

Very fair.

The moonlight touched the mark near her neck.

The bond responded instantly.

Warm.

Alive.

Like my blood had recognised her before my mind did.

Interesting.

Still dangerous.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

Her voice lowered.

"The bond is stronger tonight."

I nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at me.

Not as Seraphina Noir.

Not as a noble vampire.

Just like her.

Quiet.

Honest.

And that was far more dangerous.

"Tomorrow…"

She paused.

Rare.

Very rare.

"If something goes wrong—"

I interrupted.

"It won't."

Her eyes narrowed.

"I dislike arrogance."

I stepped closer.

"So do I. Good thing this is confidence."

That almost made her smile.

Almost.

Victory.

Small.

But beautiful.

Then—

without warning—

She grabbed my collar and pulled me closer.

There it was.

The Seraphina method of emotional communication.

Efficient.

Violent.

Romantic.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"If Heaven tries to take you…"

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"I will burn their altar first."

No hesitation.

No performance.

Only truth.

The bond pulsed violently.

And I felt it.

Fear.

Love.

Possession.

Devotion.

Raw.

Real.

She hated how much she cared.

I loved that for both of us.

I touched her wrist lightly.

And said softly—

"I know."

She looked away first.

Again.

Rare.

Important.

Then she whispered—

"I hate that you know."

I smiled.

"Blood never lies."

That made her glare.

Which, for Seraphina, was practically affection.

Then—

another voice from the rooftop door.

"Well."

Valeria stepped out carrying a glass of wine and bad intentions.

"I leave for ten minutes, and there's already emotional intimacy."

Behind her—

Selene.

Because privacy was still dead.

And Lilith.

Because apparently, fate believed in full attendance.

Wonderful.

Absolutely wonderful.

Valeria walked closer and looked between us.

"Are we confessing feelings under moonlight now?"

Seraphina released my collar slowly.

Too slow.

Territorially.

She answered calmly.

"No."

Valeria smiled.

"Liar."

Correct.

Very correct.

Selene stood beside me.

Silver hair moving softly in the night wind.

She looked at the sky.

"The Church is watching."

Lilith joined us.

Royal calm.

Beautiful danger.

"And so are the clans."

There it was.

The real pressure.

Tomorrow wasn't just a trial.

It was a stage.

Every noble family.

Every hunter.

Every enemy.

Watching.

Waiting.

Judging.

Perfect.

I looked at all four of them.

Seraphina.

Fire and possession.

Selene.

Moonlight and quiet devotion.

Lilith.

Royal choice and dangerous patience.

Valeria.

Chaos and shameless honesty.

Four queens.

Four bloodlines.

Four reasons Heaven was making poor decisions.

Valeria leaned against the wall.

"So."

She smiled.

"Before we potentially destroy a holy institution tomorrow…"

She pointed at me.

"Important question."

I sighed.

"Why do I feel like I won't enjoy this?"

"Because you're smart."

She took a sip of wine.

"Who gets the goodnight kiss?"

Silence.

Perfect.

Catastrophic silence.

Lilith looked amused.

Selene looked interested.

Seraphina looked like murder had become negotiable.

Wonderful.

I looked at the moon.

Perhaps Heaven could arrive early.

I said carefully—

"This feels like a trap."

Valeria nodded proudly.

"It is."

At least honesty survived.

Seraphina folded her arms.

"Answer."

Lilith added smoothly,

"Carefully."

Selene said softly,

"This is a survival exam."

Amazing.

I was surrounded by emotional terrorists.

Perfect.

I stepped forward.

Slowly.

Toward Seraphina first.

Her crimson eyes followed every movement.

I touched her face lightly.

And kissed her.

Warm.

Sharp.

Certain.

Fire wrapped in midnight.

When I pulled back, Valeria sighed dramatically.

"Predictable."

Then I turned.

Selene.

Moonlight is waiting patiently.

I stepped close.

Touched her hand.

And kissed her too.

Cool.

Soft.

Quietly dangerous.

Like promises whispered to winter.

Then Lilith.

She raised one elegant brow.

"Diplomatic."

I smiled faintly.

"Royally necessary."

And kissed her.

Warm.

Controlled.

Like signing destiny politely.

Finally—

Valeria stood there smiling like the villain she absolutely was.

"You saved the best for last."

Debatable.

Accurate.

Dangerous.

I pulled her closer and kissed her too.

Fire.

Chaos.

Beautiful trouble.

Exactly as expected.

When I stepped back—

All four stood there.

Satisfied.

Terrifying.

Perfect.

Valeria smiled.

"Well."

She lifted her glass.

"Now we can go to war properly."

Lilith nodded once.

"Agreed."

Seraphina looked at me.

Softly.

Dangerously.

"Do not die tomorrow."

Selene added—

"That would be inconvenient."

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

Because somehow—

between blood, queens, and Heaven itself—

I had found something worth protecting.

Not power.

Not thrones.

People.

And tomorrow—

If Heaven wanted judgment—

It would first have to survive love.

Good luck to them.

They would need it.
