Chapter 16 - The Woman Above Kings

The elevator rose in complete silence.

Golden walls.

Soft music.

Luxury is pretending to hide danger.

I stood alone, hands in my pockets, watching the numbers climb.

Each floor felt like another step away from the ordinary world.

Below—

students, classes, family breakfasts, and the illusion of normal life.

Above—

power.

Blood.

Ancient monsters dressed in elegance.

Honestly, I preferred upstairs.

The silver dagger rested beneath my jacket, hidden but present.

Father's gift.

A reminder.

Even kings should carry a blade.

The elevator finally stopped.

The doors opened without a sound.

A private floor.

No guards.

No noise.

Just silence and expensive confidence.

Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the entire city below, glittering beneath the night like prey unaware of predators above.

At the centre of the room stood a single table.

Two glasses.

One bottle of red wine.

And one woman.

She stood with her back to me, looking over the city.

Silver-golden hair flowed down her back like moonlight touched by fire.

Tall.

Elegant.

Perfect posture.

The kind of beauty that made rooms feel smaller.

She wore a black evening dress that looked less like clothing and more like authority given shape.

Even from behind—

danger.

Real danger.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

The quiet kind.

The kind that ruled without raising its voice.

I stepped forward.

She did not turn.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then—

her voice.

Calm.

Smooth.

And carrying the kind of power that made people obey before thinking.

"So."

She swirled the wine in her glass.

"The boy who made Seraphina jealous and forced Selene to stop pretending has finally arrived."

I almost smiled.

Straight to the point.

I respected that.

"I assume you're the woman everyone downstairs is afraid of."

Now she turned.

And for the first time—

I understood why.

Crimson eyes.

Cold.

Royal.

Beautiful enough to be dangerous and dangerous enough to be worshipped.

She looked at me like a queen examining a weapon she might keep.

Not dismissive.

Not impressed.

Interested.

Her lips curved slightly.

"Fear is such an ugly word."

She walked closer.

Each step is quiet.

Measured.

Controlled.

"My family prefers influence."

Of course they did.

Monsters with good branding.

She stopped in front of me and extended her hand.

"Lilith Celestine."

There it was.

The name.

The family even respected Seraphina and Selene.

The house whispered about in every hidden corner.

The clan that ruled without needing to announce it.

House Celestine.

The ones who controlled governments, money, information… and probably several people's bad decisions.

I took her hand.

Warm.

Soft.

Dangerous.

She didn't let go immediately.

Interesting.

Her crimson eyes held mine.

"Future queen of the Celestine Family."

Subtle.

Very subtle.

I smiled faintly.

"Aarav Malhotra."

Her lips moved slightly.

"Yes."

"I know."

Of course she did.

She released my hand and gestured toward the table.

"Sit."

Again.

Apparently, powerful women in this world loved commands.

I sat.

She poured wine into both glasses.

The red liquid looked suspiciously symbolic.

Probably intentional.

Lilith sat across from me.

Graceful.

Calm.

Like she had already decided the outcome of this conversation.

She lifted her glass.

"To kings who survive betrayal."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

I took the glass.

"And to queens who prefer watching from balconies."

For the first time—

She laughed.

Soft.

Real.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

Good.

I preferred honest monsters.

She set the glass down.

"Tell me something, Aarav."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"Did you know what the ten families intended when they chose you?"

I leaned back.

"They wanted a king they could control."

Lilith nodded once.

"And?"

I smiled.

"They chose poorly."

That made her eyes sharpen.

There it was.

Respect.

Not for bloodline.

For refusal.

Much better.

She stood and slowly walked around the table.

Predatory.

Elegant.

She stopped beside me.

Close enough to feel her perfume.

Dark roses.

Winter.

Power.

Her fingers lightly touched the crescent mark near my neck.

The blood bond mark pulsed instantly.

Pain.

Recognition.

And something deeper.

Her voice dropped into a whisper.

"Do you know why I called you here alone?"

I looked up at her.

"Because dramatic entrances run in vampire families?"

A small smile.

"No."

Her fingers traced the mark once.

"Because unlike the others…"

She leaned closer.

"I wanted to see whether you would kneel."

There it was.

The real test.

Not politics.

Not introductions.

Dominance.

She wanted to know if I was prey.

I slowly stood.

Now we were face-to-face.

Close enough for war.

Or something worse.

I lowered my voice.

"In my first life…"

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Interesting.

She noticed that.

Good.

I continued.

"I learnt something important."

My hand moved to her wrist.

Not rough.

Certain.

"Kings who kneel do not stay kings for long."

Silence.

Heavy.

Electric.

Her heartbeat remained calm.

Mine didn't.

Not because of fear.

Because something ancient inside me recognised her.

A rival.

A queen.

A future danger.

Possibly worse.

She looked at my hand on her wrist.

Then back at me.

And smiled.

Not polite.

Not cold.

Genuine.

Finally.

"Good."

She whispered.

"Because I would have hated you if you had."

Then—

She stepped even closer.

Close enough that distance became a suggestion.

Her crimson eyes locked onto mine.

"And I do not marry men I can't respect."

Well.

That was direct.

I appreciated efficiency.

I smiled faintly.

"So this is a proposal?"

Lilith's gaze didn't move.

"No."

Her voice softened.

"This is a warning."

She leaned near my ear.

The warmth of her breath against my skin.

Dangerous.

"If you stand beside me…"

Her whisper sent a strange heat through my veins.

"The world will either kneel…"

She paused.

"…or burn."

Then she stepped back.

Perfect calm restored.

Like she hadn't just threatened global destruction like romantic poetry.

Amazing woman.

Terrible for peace.

Perfect for me.

She picked up her glass again.

"Tomorrow night, my grandfather wishes to meet you."

That changed everything.

Even I knew what that meant.

The King Above Kings.

The true head of House Celestine.

The man legends avoided discussing too loudly.

Lord Alaric Celestine.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

I looked at Lilith.

"And if I say no?"

She smiled over the rim of her glass.

"You won't."

I raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds familiar."

She nodded.

"Powerful women repeat good advice."

Fair.

Very fair.

I walked toward the elevator.

At the door, I stopped.

Without turning, I asked—

"One last question."

Lilith waited.

I smiled faintly.

"Are you jealous too?"

Silence.

Then—

from behind me—

a soft laugh.

Dangerously soft.

"Leave before I decide to answer that personally."

I grinned and stepped inside.

The doors closed.

And for the first time since rebirth—

I felt it clearly.

This was no longer about surviving.

This was about ruling.

And somewhere between blood, betrayal, and beautiful, dangerous women—

I was starting to enjoy it.

Far too much.
